I went to sleep and woke up 6 hours later with a numb mouth and no wisdom teeth. It isn't all that bad as long as you sleep through it, which I recommend.

If it's anything close to how my operation went, then you'll be fine. I came in, sat down, got knocked out and woke up being carried out in a wheelchair with two less teeth in my mouth.

Although some people do get it bad afterwards what with bloody sores and stuff. Fortunately for me my aftermath consisted of drinking milkshakes in bed.

I feel you...I have two that are just completely busted up. One is mostly gone, and the other gets routine infections. With no dental insurance, I don't exactly have a way to get them removed.

Toothaches really suck.

I got all four of mine removed without complications. Two were pulled (top two) because they had emerged, and two were cut out because they hand't emerged yet.

I didn't have all that much time to worry about it because I got them out like...insanely fast. I was talking to the dentist about how I should see a surgeon about taking them out, and Friday they were gone.

I felt pretty good the next day, and barely touched the pain meds.

I'm...almost three weeks out and it's like I never even had them. I'm pretty much back to normal except for the need to continue cleaning out the pits in the top of my mouth, but they are almost healed now.

My roommate, on the other hand, had a much harder time of the whole thing.

I've had all of my wisdom teeth out and one molar. One was a surgical removal, the others were just yanked. I can say that this is FAAAAR easier than everyone makes it out to be. I had them all done with just novocaine. It doesn't hurt at all and even after it wears off, its fine. I never needed to even take any pain killers.
The only crappy part is not being able to eat normal food for a couple days. Besides that, its a breeze. I highly recommend just getting it done. The longer you wait, the more complications they will cause.

Meh still consider yourself lucky I think. My mum has had pretty much all her top row teeth pulled out and has dentures now. She has had them for a while and isn't even that old. As long as you have the majority of your own teeth in your head I'd say you are doing alright. But still your right it does suck and hopefully it isn't to painful for you. Good luck :)

Wisdoms? I had my four taken out, since they were causing me UNBELIEVABLE agony. Seriously, one night I downed four of one type of aspirin, two of another, oragel, mouth rinse, and a shot of whiskey. Didn't do shit. So, went in, had them taken out. Took maybe 45 minutes and all four were gone. I stayed awake the whole time, since given novacane properly, you will only feel some pressure/tugging. I never really felt any pain afterwards, due to being prescribed some painkillers, but I stopped taking those after the first day. The bleeding is kinda...'strange', but the worst part? They want you to keep the holes clean from any food and such, and you need to rinse your mouth with salt-water every morning and night. I could not wait for THAT to end.

tl;dr: Wisdoms suck a whole lot more in your mouth then when they're out, don't sweat it.

I've had three removed (the fourth one never showed up). The two on the bottom were a pain in the butt, but the one on the top was out so easily I was able to eat solid foods like 3 hours after the operation.

Unless your dentist sucks, you've got nothing to worry about my friend. :)

The only part that I didn't like about getting my two bottom wisdom teeth removed was how long before I could eat solid food. Soup is fine, but soup for like a whole week straight just gets boring. Your jaw longs to chew!!

So in short, four fucked up widom teeth to remove and two extra pre-molars to be untangled from my face like christmas lights.
I had all of my wisdom teeth removed surgically, one at a time as it became necessary. My advice is as follows:

If you have a job, get some time off. If you have classes during the time that you're getting the surgery, get the surgery done on a Friday. My point being: get your damn scheduled cleared.

Take the nice, prescription pain meds, sleep as much as you possibly can, and do as little as possible for a few days after the procedure. In my case, I took the above advice and was fine after two days of doing little more than napping, reading, and possible playing some video games (it's been over 15 years, so my memory is fuzzy). Inactivity and giving your body time to heal up is key. My brother insisted on being very active after his oral surgery and was miserable weeks. I did as little as possible for 2-3 days after my oral surgery and was fine.

Your procedure sounds a LOT more complicated than mine was (like I said, I had one tooth pulled at a time, spaced out over a few years), but I'm guessing that the principles are similar.

My last surgical procedure (getting a abscess removed from my throat before it squeezed my windpipe and suffocated me) took me two weeks to fully recover from, but I was twice your age at the time. I guessing that you'll bounce back better.

So, in short: take the prescribed "happy pills", do as little as possible, avoid solid foods, and sleep as much as you can. Any sympathy fellatio/cunnilingus you might get (gender-dependent, naturally) is a bonus (I got none, but that's my own problem).

I have the teeth of a 21 year old apparently so i'm very late for the party.
21 years old is late for getting your wisdom teeth taken out? Well, that doesn't bode well for me (*is 21, never had wisdom teeth removed*).

Has anyone had to take time off work after getting the wisdom teeth removed?

I only had to get my bottom ones removed so far, very recently I might add, but they weren't able to remove the right-side one because the anesthesia wouldn't numb the nerves in the tooth itself. So I'm left with a hole on one side and a stitched opening on the other side just waiting to be finally hollowed out too. So of course, that means 2 more weeks of healing and liquid food after that.

I had all mine removed a couple of years ago during the summer, all four of them were impacted, it sucked so bad. I was sick for a long time and all I did was sleep. I didn't eat for a long time because it hurt so bad and made me sick and codine and vicodin they gave me made me puke.

I've had eight teeth pulled from my mouth because they were 'growing into my jaws'. I was grateful when my wisdom teeth came in. Know what it's like to chew plants with four molars? Tiring.

That said, it's really not bad at all. Almost all dentistry is nothing to worry about either way. You won't even feel the tooth being pulled. You're mouth recovers fast and the worst you'll have to deal with is stitches in your gum, which degrade over time and won't require removal.

After having that many teeth pulled, my first thoughts were: I'm hungry.

As a tip as to how 'bad' it is.

I have my wisdom teeth, grown out perfectly ;)

It amazes how people get hole in their teeth, no holes, braces or anything wrong with my teeth..only thing the darned dentist nags about is to start with dental floss =/

/smugness

My brother chipped his tooth when he fell of the trampoline...he demanded full dose anasthetics for them to fix it xD

I had a wisdom tooth taken out because it cracked and became decayed. It was a fairly straightforward procedure to be honest. None of this fancy crap everyone else here is on about, I went into the dentist, he gave me two injections to the gum to deaded the nerves then 10 minutes later got what looked like a screwdriver but square and pushed on both sides of the wisdom tooth. Pushed on one side til he heard the root crack, pushed on the other side til he heard the other root crack, then got the pliers and yanked the bugger out. Job over in 10 seconds.

Took a couple of panadols for the pain but the cotton wool was pissing me off 2 hours later so I just spat it out and let the wound seal itself up. Then I took another couple of panadols a few hours later then couldn't be arsed anymore and just sat through the pain.

But I won't sugarcoat it, you have some bad problems with yours and it will hurt. Not during the procedure, not right afterwards, but a few days later when whatever they gave you starts to wear off you'll feel an odd kind of sensation in your gums. Once you get used to that you're home sailing.

(just remember, pain is your body's way of telling you something is wrong, just acknowledge that fact and reassure yourself you know what the problem is and there's no danger and the pain starts to numb itself fairly quickly)

I had all four removed last summer and it was a relatively quick and painless procedure. Two of them had already grown in with the other two nearly in as well. So they didn't have to go digging to far into my gums to get them out. I didn't touch the pain meds at all after because my jaw barely bothered me afterwards certainly not enough for me to take any. I was eating mashed potatoes, jello, and pudding (yeah I know weird combo) for a few days after.

I also recommend on keeping your mouth clean by rinsing it with salt water because its the easiest way to avoid dry sockets. Those will fuck your day up from what I hear from others who got their wisdom teeth out.

EDIT: As for yourself though you'll probably be in more pain after the procedure than I was seeing as your wisdom teeth are more fucked up than mine. Just take the pain meds and you should be fine.

I had my wisdom teeth taken out two weeks ago. I had a very smooth surgery and recovery. They didn't put me under general, but sedated me with something very strong, so, while I was "awake" during the surgery, I don't remember a single thing about it. The only recommendation I have is to follow all directions they give you for your recovery. Make sure to use ice-packs on your face every hour for twenty minutes for a few days. Any swelling you'd have would peak after 48 hours. Eat soft foods (ice-cream, yogurt, etc) for the first few days, then transition to softer solid foods such as fish, and after a week, you'll be able to return to everything else without a problem. Avoid nuts, seeds, and popcorn for three weeks. Make sure to keep your mouth clean - rinse with a salt-water solution after eating and brush your teeth after meals. It's tedious, but it's worth it, considering I had absolutely no complications whatsoever.

You'll be totally fine. Just take it easy after the operation.

I had all four of mine taken out. 2 at a time in 2 appointments. First right side, then left side. Was awake for both.

The actual operation is not bad if they do the painkillers right. Just shut your eyes so you don't have the psychological experience of seeing someone stick a bloody great needle into your mouth.

My first surgery was complicated though, as one of the buggers just did not want to come out. The roots formed actual hooks. The dentist had to break the bastard into four pieces before it came out. The recovery was not pleasant, as I was in quite a bit of pain for the first week, and bled for a few days. Couldn't sleep the first night because of the pain. But overall, not that bad.

The second surgery went off without a hitch. Bleeding stopped the same day, and was in almost no pain in recovery. Didn't even need pain killers.

Going under was FUCKING TERRIFYING to say the least can't even begin to describe how scary it was but i'm extremely paranoid 24/7

Coming out was crazy I remember like hearing myself in 3rd person no vision but I said "yeah, I can walk" to someone who said we need to get you into the other room then I was soooo calm the weirdest kind of calm felt off balance but not really to say the least morphine is lovely

Spring break sucks ass when you can't eat anything solid & your mouth hurts (so much that your still surprised it was never infected) not THAT bad but still seems like a lot for nothing.

morphine 10/10
no solid food 0/10
pain 3/10 manageable but annoying
over all fun :p
