Also, I'm not entirely sure, but I do believe it was a permanent form of a shape-shifting/appearance-altering spell that he used to mold his face into a more snake-like visage. Presumably, they assumed that the man who lives and breathes snake imagery doesn't really need an explanation for why he would want to look snakelike.
Again, I haven't read the books or seen the movies in a long time, so maybe there's an explanation for that and I'm making an ass of myself.
