You mean you don't eat snacks, drink alcohol, and flirt while on the toilet?Shade184 said:On a related note, I found it utterly hilarious when I talked about going to a party ("PAH-tee") on my vlog, and some American viewers wondered why I was going to the "potty". Despite the fact that everything else I said implied that it was a party.
I don't know how it managed to get "pahst" them. -_-
Looks to me like you were pronouncing it correctly in the first place, unless you're speaking in French:Asuka Soryu said:Violet
I use to think it was 'Vai-oh-let', but now I know it's 'vee-oh-lay".
I also noticed alot of people can't pronounced Karaoke and Kamikaze. xD
Hey, hey, keep it down! They're not supposed to know! Not sure what the hell you're talking about. I took Japanese and I've always... ALWAYS heard it the first way. So... ya.Daystar Clarion said:So, after watching some Marvel vs Capcom 3 footage and following up with some research, it turns out I've been mispronouncing Amaterasu for a long time.
You'd think it would be pronounced: Am-ah-teh-rah-su
Turns out it's pronounced: Am-ah-teh-ras
Just so you know "Am-ah-teh-rah-su" isn't necessarily wrong, how you pronounce it is up to you, it's just that most people choose not to pronounce the "u" (in fact Japanese words never end in the letter "s", they always end in a vowel or in the letter "n").Daystar Clarion said:You'd think it would be pronounced: Am-ah-teh-rah-su

Actually, both pronunciations would be correct (regional dialect. It's like pronouncing "Desu" as "desu" rather than "des." Both are correct, but "des" is generally heard more often), but you got your syllables wrong.Daystar Clarion said:So, after watching some Marvel vs Capcom 3 footage and following up with some research, it turns out I've been mispronouncing Amaterasu for a long time.

Yeah, Japan fucked me over again, *shakes fist* I'll remember this!
So, fellow escapists, any words you've mispronounced for extended periods of time? Either because you've never heard the word spoken or because you simply can't say it?
Captcha: geethent barriers. Sounds like a shield company...
In Japanese, it's generally understood that any of the '-u' endings (aside from a double vowel ending) is usually what's called a "whispered vowel." The sound's still made, but it's soft enough to where it's barely audible. The exception being their 't' kana. Quite simply, there is no 'tu.' It's 'tsu.' So, what they end words with (this usually applies to borrowed words) 'to' if they want a whispered vowel.Dango said:Just so you know "Am-ah-teh-rah-su" isn't necessarily wrong, how you pronounce it is up to you, it's just that most people choose not to pronounce the "u" (in fact Japanese words never end in the letter "s", they always end in a vowel or in the letter "n").Daystar Clarion said:You'd think it would be pronounced: Am-ah-teh-rah-su

OT: My brother and I pronounce "mischievous" differently. I say "miss-cha-vis" while he says "miss-chee-vee-us".
