Noble 2 in Halo Reach. The way they did her in just came out of nowhere, sniped through the head mid-sentence. Totally caught me off guard. Such a simple death for such an awesome character.

The endings of mass effect 2 if you don't do it right. Tali getting headshotted by an rpg was awesome but that shit really pissed me off.

Kat's death was actually good, her getting a needle in the visor with her shields EMP'd just seemed like something that would happen in an actual war (suddenly getting killed with no warning). The cut-scene after was pretty good, too.
I agree, but Kat's death was very emotional for me. I had to put the remote down because of how depressing it was. It was played out very well and shows off the nature of war, but it still is a sucky way to die.

With so many threads about the 'best' character deaths in gaming it seems only fair to look at the other side of the tracks at the worst deaths in games.
My choice is Imran Zakhaev, the russian villian from Call of Duty 4, survived a 50. Cal sniper shot and loss of an arm but gets killed with a pistol by a six-day recruit, should have been so much better.
EDIT: Should mention that there will be major spoilers
Actually, I think the more bullshit death wasn't really a death at all. When you snipe Imran, I quite specifically sniped him IN THE HEAD. Made DAMN sure it drilled a hole in his head. And the son of a ***** loses his arm instead.

Yes, you made a plot, congrats. But don't make it so I can shoot him in the head and he loses an arm. That's just bullshit gameplay.

Head =/= arm

RDR John Marston. That was a real kick in the balls
OR when Shepard kills Soap and Ghost in MW2. LAME!
That wasn't Soap. Soap was off somewhere else. That was the new recruit that the SAS got. I forget his name. Soap is in the process of dying at the end of the game, however...

But I do agree. What was the most bs for me wasn't the fact that he killed them, but the fact that he killed them after doing all that fucking work. I mean, kudos on the betrayal and all, but don't make me work for my death, ya twisted bastard...

EDIT: Roach, that's the name. A certain bit of irony there, considering how fast he died... Should have given that name to the American soldier in CoD4. HE had to crawl around in radiation for a few minutes before he could die...

Not another idiot that writes "/thread" instead of a comment. It was a worst death cos you just shot him....or one of your characters kill him in one shot. That is a bad death as he was the end boss and i should off been able to kick his ass....which would have lead to a good death.
I surprised people always bring up Lucien because of a lack of a battle. It wouldn't make sense in terms of the story to suddenly have Lucien as an all powerful character. People cling to boss battles despite being archaic game mechanic which can seriously break the flow of a game's story and doesn't make much sense. Fable 2's ending was bad, it wasn't because the lack of a final boss, but rather how the whole scenario was set up.

Kat in Halo Reach

It was so undramatic and uninteresting. It was just like "wait, what just happened?"

It happened so fast that if you blinked you would have missed it.
This. I mean what the hell happened to her shields ?
Worst however is Lucian in fable 2.
Fuck ninjas.
Oh and another one, benezia from mass effect 1,powerful biotic, who opens a few doors and then dies...
The nuke damaged all of their shields with the emp pulse.
So an EMP went off...

That doesn't explain why a covenant transport ship was hovering at the right height over a random hole in a building, with a sniper standing ready, despite the Spartan's indicating in the previous scene that all covenant ships were retreating.

Spartans Never Die...
They're Just Missing In Action
Dude she got shot in the face with a needle rifle, I'm pretty sure she's dead...

Nah, just kidding, I know that saying. MIA Kat, MIA...

How about Noble 3 from Halo: Reach? We know for a fact that all the spartans died, except for Master Chief, but they just kinda hoped we would forget about his fate.

Fallout 3 the "good" ending. To be killed by radiation poisoning (spoiler) and not continuing to play the rest of the game sucked.
Or at the the time or release of the Force Unleashed it made sense for Starkiller to die but everyone knows that the revelation of "THE EMPIRE CREATED THE REBEL ALLIANCE!" wasn't really a shock or made any harrowing connection, more of a "oh, what a convenient plot hole filler".

Tassadar in Starcraft - it was an awesome idea, plot point, etc, but the cutscene fell flat.
Really? I spent most of the entire game sticking by Tassadar and admiring his noble nature. When the cutscene played with the setting sun, moving music and the the grim look on his face, as he was deciding his destiny, I was moved to tears.

Maybe in the nineties it was easier to grow an emotional attachment to video game charaters as storytelling techniques and graphics were just coming out of the definition of primitive. But that point doesn't really cut it as an explanation, because during the prior year Aeris's death (Aerith to the brits) didn't do anything at all for me. She was a Mary Sue girl-next-door stereotype whose presence barely affected the story. How the villain literally fell from the sky and impale her, was weak storytelling and only there to further the plot and give the masculine hero a cheap motivation. And the sappy music and bright visuals made me want to gag.

As another poster replied "To each his own."

As for my picks:

Luis Sera. Getting impaled by Saddler's enormous penis, before Leon's cheesy Vader "NOOOOO!" The combination of humor and embarassment made be laugh out loud while face-palming at the same time.

This cutscene has a special place in my heart. When I was a small child, my best friend was one of those overly sensitive and serious types. If a movie was made to feel sad, he would feel sad no matter how corny it was.

During our first playthrough of aforementioned LIIIIIGGGGHHHHHHTTTTT scene, while I myself, and the other guys were laughing our asses off like any sane person, he fucking cried. I don't even mean got a little teary eyed, but he bawled like a baby. Then yelled at us for being insensitive jerks by not appreciating such a "moving scene." For that memory it's one of my favorite cutscenes in any game.

Oh yeah Harry Osborn and Venom in Spider-Man 3. No spoiler tags because almost everyone's seen it, and those who haven't: DON'T!

I'm surprised noone mentioned the death of Wesker in RE5...
I didn't get to see the game form beginning to the end, but I caught that fight and, while it was intense in a way, all I could think about was, "wait... that's it?"

If I was to place another RE character I know.. probably Luis(methinks) from RE4, pretty much the over reaction Leon had right after also didn't help.

Oh and to compared with the example set by the OP, for some reason I'm remembering the beginning of a Robocop movie right now, the guy survives what? 7 close range shotgun shots and die when the main bad guy shoots him with a pistol?
Trust me, I was furious when Wesker got killed off in one of the lamest ways possible.
The main antagonist of the whole series gets killed by crappy RPGs? I mean, seriously?
He DESERVED so much better than that, seriously.

On a sidenote: I think that Chris Redfield is to the RE series what Charlie Sheen is to comedy - way overrated. Leon would've been much more suitable for "saving the day" (I'm a fanboy, I know!).

Sorry for the offtopic.

It's like Lionhead's story department threw their arms in the air and said "Ah fuck it!"
Yeah, but in Lionhead's defense topping Jack of Blades as a villain must have been a *****.

Crappy RPGs in a helicopter in a homage to the final boss fights of old games, while falling into a VOLCANO!

I also forgot to add that every supporting character who dies in Mafia 2 had lame deaths. With the exception of one character the player never got enough time or dialogue with the characters to grow an emotional attachment. As for the one who did, he was such a pain in the ass, I didn't really care.

The first Mafia on the other hand, did this well.

No, no. You went off topic to be sure, but it needed to be said. I too am for Leon Kennedy and against the Wesker death. He's WESKER! Maybe he's not even dead, maybe he's just waiting under the lava...just waiting...for...a better idea that Uroboros I guess (he won't be waiting long, lol)

I'm going to say your father character in Fallout 3. Seriously, radiation? So dull of a way for a really great and emotional character to go. I mean I was like "Is that bleedin it?" I had a frickin radiation suit and a whole ton of Rad X; I could have easily waded in there and pulled him out before it was leathal.

most of humanity at the end of neon genesis evangelion...still have nightmares about that happening to me.
Technically they didn't "die", the barriers that held their (our) souls apart were just negated and it allowed all of humanity to merge together into one entity with no individual thought or identity, which was the goal of the Human Instrumentality Project, but because at the end Shinji rejected instrumentality then any human that wants to or has the willpower will be able to detach and separate their soul again and "come back", at least that's my take on it.

Anyway back on-topic, the "worst" death for me would have to be Bill from L4D in The Passing DLC, sure we might find out later with the comics that he has some awesome badass ending where he gives up his life to save his 3 comrades, but just finding his body lying there on my first playthrough of the campaign was so pathetically sad, he deserved better. :(

There's no reason for it. He's not a particularly likable character, but I like him.
I was sad when Kutner died, as he was one of my favorite characters. He was so enjoyable.

Garza from Killzone 2. So damned dumb.
I was pissed that Garza died, as he was the only mildly relatable character and the only one I liked in the whole story, forcing my to play the rest of the game with Rico "I'm furken ahngreh" Vasquez.
I more hated the killing of Viscari, because everyone logical is saying "DON'T YOU FUCKING DARE RICO!" for the entire cutscene, only for him to blast Viscari in the face, bringing forth EXACTLY what he threatened.

Right after the credits, there is a prompt the press up, if you don't press it within 1 second it appears, you die and must restart the ENTIRE FINAL BOSS OVER AGAIN FROM PHASE 1.

In devil may cry 5 what we know and love of Dante died. You can't be badass by whining and cutting yourself.
