Worst Experience With a Gaming Community

I think the worst community I've personally ever come across is the community of people who play fighters online. Now, I'm all right at fighting games. I've never really played one enough to get super familiar with any of the characters, but when I do pick 'em up, I can usually find my way around them. I've only been online with my PS3 for a couple of years, so my experiences are pretty slim, but they're pretty much one and the same.

The first fighter I played online was Soul Calibur IV. I love Soul Calibur. Thought I was pretty decent. Played one round online and lost any desire to do it again. The problem wasn't that I lost: my opponent backed me into a corner and spammed a couple of moves that drained my health like crazy. Wasn't good enough to manage to get around him, be it by jumping over him, counterattacking, blocking, or what have you. He just dropped me. Fine. I can take a loss. What I couldn't take was a solid five minutes of him sending me messages asking whether I was brain-dead or playing with broken fingers. Into the block list he went, never tried SCIV online again.

The second time I tried a fighter online was Street Fighter IV. I was Blanka, playing against Ken. Again, ass kicked. Fine. Again, a string of messages asking me if I'd ever played a video game before. Again, asshole goes on the block list. Just because I lost, doesn't mean you're unquestionably superior to me. In fact, that game was a helluva lot more even than my SCIV one. I actually thought I'd done pretty well. But, again, after that, I lost all desire to play online.

The third time I played a fighter online was Marvel vs. Capcom 3. I'd never played an MvC game before, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Didn't do too hot in the arcade mode (got my ass handed to me by the comp, to be honest), but I thought I'd give the online a whirl anyway. Get into a match, and almost immediately start getting my ass kicked. Middle of the match, my connection drops. Out of the game I go. Thirty seconds later, here comes the most shocking message I've ever read in my life. The gist of it was that I was a pansy-ass ****** who quit because I couldn't handle a loss like a real man because I liked it up the bum. Apparently, being gay and being a sore loser are co-dependent. Didn't know that.

The last time I played a fighter online was this past September. I picked up Persona 4: Arena, mostly because I love the Persona games. Did really well against the computer, so I thought I'd try playing it online. Teddie was my fighter of choice, and I played four matches. Won all four. I was pretty proud of myself. After the last match, the guy started spamming me the same message, over and over. It was simply 'learn some moves.' Just out of curiosity, I watched the match back. I had a pretty well-rounded set of moves going. Didn't know what the hell he was talking about. Then I noticed that every single move he hit me with was one of three exact same moves. This irked me a little bit, so I sent him back 'I don't need them to beat you, obviously. Grow the fuck up,' and then added him to my block list. Don't have any desire to try a fighter online again, at this point.

But, really, just about any game you play online is going to have a terrible community. The most vocal members of any online game are the ones you don't want to hear from. The jackasses spamming racist, sexist, trolling remarks over trade chat in a capital city in World of Warcraft are a minority, but they talk so loud they seem to be overwhelming. The assholes who shriek into their mics in Call of Duty are, I've found, actually significantly less than those who are using them mics to try and coordinate with each other. They're just a hell of a lot louder. I tend to mute everyone in lobbies, anyway. I only play online when my friends are on, and we just use Skype to chat with each other. I hate the internet for that reason: I know there are thoughtful, intelligent people around, but they're buried under an overtly hateful layer of super-loud assholes.
What I have learned from browsing fighting game forums is that they are actually worse than LoL.

I know right?

So much elitism and hatred running that subculture. You want the prime example?

http://www.sirlin.net/articles/playing-to-win-part-1.html

This guy is the prime example of what is wrong with that community. Pure petulance and elitism. LoL is just filled with idiots. The fighting game scene is just full of this...

There is a reason why people like Smash more than the other fighters. It's easy to pick up and the person losing can, gasp, fight back!

I've had some rough times on league of legends as well.
It's gotten better though through the tribunal, a system where players judge other players behaviour which can lead to suspension, bans, etc.

It's still nasty at times, but i just stopped giving a fuck awhile ago. Seriously. Why should it piss me off what a random stranger on the internet facetypes with his head red from anger, tears of self-pity in his eyes?

New players go through the hardest time. Population on lower levels is still unfiltered, filled with assholes that got banned and roll a new account. Work your way through that and league holds a lot of pleasant moments for you to enjoy.

Xbox live is my winner with some MMO forums coming second. Also all gaming forums when there is a huge internet fight over a game see ME3 or DA2.

It's fifty-fifty between the CoD and Gears community for me. Both of these communities broke at least one of the games in their respective series through an obsessive need to cheat. Mw 2 for CoD and Gears 2 for the Gears crowd.
To be fair to CoD, MW2 was broken to begin with. Infinity Ward cared more about getting every bell and whistle into the multiplayer than they did for actually keeping things balanced. That's what I liked about Black Ops mp--along with Hardline Pro, while it lasted.

OT:
Assassins Creed Bro/Rev MP. Over the summer I got all the achievement in both games' MP, and the only people who play it anymore are either achievement hunters or assholes. These are all people who have maxed the level and only go online to use the broken abilities to fuck over anyone who's a lower level than them.

The entirety of Xbox Live. Here, let me give you the scenario:

*Invited to a game of TF2 [small](I got the Orange Box for the 360)[/small]*
*Joins game*
Dude who invited me: Who the fuck are you?
Me: I was invited, so I decided to join.
Dude who invited me: Goddamn noobs!
*Booted*
Me: I'm paying how much a month for this, again?

And I've stopped playing games online ever since. At least on the 360. :p
You are paying 4$ a month . Can't you tell!

OT: fighting game comunity is pretty bad to newbees . But i surmounted that and am now trying to get people to join us !

I dislike a large chunk of my fellow Bioware fans. Nothing and I mean NOTHING from the past 6 years or so ever seems to be good enough for them. On top of that, when something doesn't meet their expectations they throw an unholy fit worse than my cousin used to when he was three years old. Thankfully, I didn't let it colour my opinion on whether or not I should play DA2 and ME3.

Especially since I have a confession to make... I liked DA2 better than Origins!

The ME3 community is not too bad, i've only been insulted once, but that guy was horrible to everyone and tried to kick numerous people for no reason at all. Other than him i've had no issues with the ME3 multiplayer.

CoD and Battlefield on the other hand, insults galore, and i'm not going to repeat what they said, but suffice to say my block list gained a few new additions and decreased my liklihood of playing it online.

I'm still a fan. I wear my N7 hoodie every day.

I haven't played Mass Effect 3 though.

Probably for fear of what I would become.

Gears of War. I still love the game and play it at least 4 hours a week, but most of the community is just human garbage. There are people who will complain about anything. Using anything will get a "(insert weapon/melee here) noob" message.

It's usually from people from Mexico for some reason. I don't know why everybody assumes that I know spanish.

you have to play it....its a rite of passage for a TRUE fan, to have your heart ripped from your chest and stomped on..only to hear unsympathetic tants from the cold fast reaches of the internet...

only then will you become a true fan, heart turned to steel and able to shrug off the hate for Bioware and Mass Effect

The original GoW? Or the franchise GoW.

I've watched the endings. Including the extended cut ones. They weren't so bad. So if that's the worst, I'll always be a fan of Bioware's Mass Effect.

Dragon Age is a different story.

Both. Don't get me wrong, I've met some great people from each game that I still play with on a regular basis, but the rest of the community has shown me nothing but hate and disrespect.

Granted these people are usually mad because I'm better than they are, but it's no excuse.

League of Legends.

The most angry, immature, petulant community I have ever had the misfortune of being exposed to.
Every MOBA game suffers from this cause and my experience was just like yours. Swap LoL for HoN only and it's basically the same. So much bile and hate in one game, one has to think if that's what hell looks like.

The only Multiplayer game I really play is Tf2, and the Occasional Left 4 Dead 2. Although, I must say I've only ever had one bad experience with L4D2, and that was when some guy thought he was so smug and great at the game. He complained about how I was playing (I was quite Helpful, Decent as the infected as well) and then prompted to bring up my mother. Suffice it to say, I still believe he was just a COD Fanboy who picked it up 'cause it was on sale. Yeah, that's it really.

The community over at Guild Wars 2 Guru is quite possibly the biggest horde of butthurt lunatics I've ever seen. Seriously, they are rapidly becoming worse than the folks who spend all their time bitching on WoW forums.

Case in point: Anet releases a new gear tier that is barely better than exotic. Everyone goes ballistic, even though they were whining that lvl 80 karma armor wasn't any better than crafted gear. The best part is that the new tier is really only necessary for later parts of the new dungeon, since it has slots for resistance stats and whatnot.
