They may not subconsciously be trying to fit in, but when people rant and rave about how shitty the books and movies are, when they've never seen or read them. That's called ignorance.
If you have, then I have no problem with you. That's called forming your own opinion and that's perfectly okay.
Also, none of those people are 'good vampires', because vampires
aren't real. Those are actors that played the role they were assigned, a role which either does or doesn't fit with what you'd like to imagine a made up creature is like. Also, it's Robert Pattinson. He just got paid to play the role, and as the character was defined, did a fairly good job.
Saying Stephanie Meyer butchered the vampire is silly, because like I said, they aren't real. She changed the concept to something of her own choosing, hence, fantasy.
Saying this, I too prefer the more classical idea of a 'vampire', but can also appreciate modern adaptations such as True Blood and the Anita Blake series, etcetera. Twilight was in no means amazing, but it's not the bubonic plague either.

vampires are real; maybe not in physical form, but the lore and subculture are certainly there. i never actually used the word "butchered", thanks for putting words in my mouth, but in a sense, she did butcher the vampire, rather the idea of it- took a good thing, and rolled it in glitter. and yes, the sparkling thing is a big irk for me, before you ask.
