Watch Six Feet Under, one of the main characters was gay, but he wasn't a gay character, he was a character that happened to be gay, just like other characters happened to be straight.captainfluoxetine said:Yeah I'd have to say camp gays piss me off. Rarely do you see a gay bloke on TV portrayed as a 'normal' person.
actually, if you look into how the director designed District 9 aliens, he stated that it is hardwired to humans that we can't empathize with anything that is not at least humanoid.Chamale said:How about the space alien who A: Speaks English and is psychologically very similar to humans, or B: Is inexplicably hostile to all human life.
Like other stereotypes, these space alien stereotypes allow directors to lazily rehash old characters without the possibility of new, distinct plots coming along as a possibility. District 9 and Avatar took some steps towards making aliens that are alien, but psychologically, both of these films depict aliens that could be considered subgroups of humanity. Three Worlds Collide [http://lesswrong.com/lw/y4/three_worlds_collide_08/], though its human characters are repulsively unlikeable, is probably the best example of a story dealing with alien psychology.
With the exception of the time she was into self-destructive casual sex after getting a terminal diagnosis, Thirteen on House isn't much of one.Monkeyman8 said:Well gays have it pretty bad, but I'm gonna go with bisexuals. right now i would say the jewish stereotype character. my god, enough with it, its NOT FUNNY, it just makes me wanna punch the screen in annoyance
Why do you keep listing the few aversions or subversions as if that somehow impacts general statements?Nwabudike Morgan said:With the exception of the time she was into self-destructive casual sex after getting a terminal diagnosis, Thirteen on House isn't much of one.
That wasn't what I was doing, at all. Sorry if you thought I was, but I wasn't. I know I'd want to know if there were exceptions to the thing that pissed me off.Dags90 said:Why do you keep listing the few aversions or subversions as if that somehow impacts general statements?Nwabudike Morgan said:With the exception of the time she was into self-destructive casual sex after getting a terminal diagnosis, Thirteen on House isn't much of one.
I am so with you about atheists. They're either smug and obsessed with nothing but tearing down the people who believe in a higher power that they view as idiots (kinda like atheists on the internet, now that I think about it) or lost souls who just need a little hope in their lives and they'll be saved.Monkeyman8 said:wait, people pay attention to characters that aren't House? Anyway minor point conceded, there's at least one, major point stands they're probably the most stereotyped, well them or atheists, or the logical character. When I think about it, it's more of a three way tie really.Nwabudike Morgan said:With the exception of the time she was into self-destructive casual sex after getting a terminal diagnosis, Thirteen on House isn't much of one.Monkeyman8 said:Well gays have it pretty bad, but I'm gonna go with bisexuals. Or the inverse. Because some brutes beat up on their wives the rest of us are just supposed to do nothing if a woman were to slap or otherwise act physically aggressively toward us, you know, so that we don't turn into them or something.Dr. wonderful said:Anyway, the worst sterotype is that Woman can't hurt men.
Yes. Yes they can.
The stereotype that bothers me most is the Quiet protagonist. How can a movie/story/game be based around you when you do not talk or even flinch when something is said or done to you!Evilsanta said:Mine would the "Nerdy girl" that chick becomes super hot if she takes of her glasses and let out her hair. Stop it already!
Let's just say women and men can beat the living crap out of their spouse.Rhade said:Or the inverse. I love it in TV/movies when a scene degenerates into a comical slap-battle, all gender issues aside for that moment.
i don't know the differenceDags90 said:A lot of people seem to be listing tropes, not stereotypes...
