Would naming my kid "Vault" be a detriment to him in life? Or a bonus giving him instant geek-cred?

bullshit hobby,
Why are you even here? Not trying to be offensive, but if video games are a"bullshit hobby", why in all that is Nintendo are you on a gaming website forum?
Didn't you say you once had some kind of game show running or something?

Bullshit hobby.
That's some nice opinion you got there.

Also, once you get paid, I don't think it counts as either bullshit or a hobby anymore. Iunno.

this goes into the "drunk tattoo" kind of thinking imo, this will start to sound like a bad idea over time anyway

what does the mother of your kid think of this anyway?

and if youre trying to give him "geek cred" ... why are you assuming he wants it? are you dictating in advance what your child will like or dislike?

lastly asking for advice on some online forum is the worst idea for babynames ever, just a step below "if i get 10000 like my wife will let me call our baby megatron" facebookgroups.

Think this through!

I didn't actually mean I'd try and live vicariously (at least, no more than normal parents). That's my b, wording and whatnot. Admitted.

As for the Fallout reference, I've addressed that, and even argued that most people won't know what it mens, even now. Th's not a problem. I was referring to it giving him geek-cred if he happens to turn into gamer and meet others. I know I'd be impessed if that was someone's name now.

Also, the wife is down for it. So, yeah.
If this is the case, then I refer you to the numerous studies published on the internet regarding child names and educational/career success. Keep it in the middle name if you must do it, but give him/her a nice normal respectable first name. Something they can build a career on. No one is going to invest money in a guy named 'Vault'.

I gave my daughter her name 15 years ago and it isn't even a quarter as unusual as 'Vault' and I still wish i had chosen something more normal. Go classic is my advice. Not just for your kid, but so you can live with it for the rest of your life too. It's like a tattoo only way more important. The only way to guarantee you won't regret it later is to go with 'timeless classic'.

I hope that OP never has kids, genuinely. He barely sounds mature enough to competently care for pets.

Children are not toys nor accessories which you can decorate with your niche hobbies and likes. You want someone called "Vault" in your family feel free to change your own name.

-facepalm-

Not trolling, being serious. :/

Oh well, I've learned what I wanted to... he'll have to put up with ignorance... big shocker. That'll happen regardless, as the world seems split about even with heartless d-bags and people that realize 'A rose by any other name" etc.

I've decided I'm going for it.

His name will be (firstname) Vault (lastname).

Thanks to all those that were constructive with their criticism without resorting to name calling or blind hatred, and those who supported this unique name.

Do. Not. Name. Your. CHILD. Vault. Just don't. You want a thematic name? Fine, it's cool. Tyrande, Sylvanna - maybe, though I'd be careful. Dorian, Isaac, Illai, Orion -maybe. But NOT A BLOODY STRUCTURE!!! Would you call someone Highway? White House? Frigate? Water pipe? As family names it can happen.
To make analogy more clear to you, would you name your daughter Cookie? Good pet name, not a proper name. Just as you don;t name children Table, Window, Ceiling and whatever other item-names you can think of.

Sorry, I vented on you. I'm obviously being extreme here but it's just I hate when people give their children f*cked up names that may seem sensible for parents and then scar a child's life. I'm all for original but don't go overboard.

To give example of a good (imo) theme name, my friend named her daughter Silver. Now her name is Silver Birch.

Vault has many other meanings (overcoming an obstacle, keeping a treasure safe, etc), but the decision is made. Thanks though. ^_^

He won't thank you for it.

Not once.

Ever.

He may not even like video games when he grows up; you're doing this for you, not him.

So? if the kid is that butthurt about it it's possible to change ones name.

Imo, wait until skyrim comes along, incase you find something better from there...

Oh, and about geek cred, dogmeat would be better xD

Vault is an overall good choice tho, since when pronounced it's the same as the name Walt.

You know I vehemently oppose things like "Parenthood tests", I think they're intrusive, ethically questionable and would require immoral actions like forced sterilization to be effectively enforced.

But GODDAMN if there aren't people like OP who make me think twice.

First and foremost I really hope you never have kids OP

Secondly I hope any woman willing to spawn with you has the intelligence to shut you down (though considering the former i doubt she'll have the latter)

Thirdly your child will hate you for it, and with just cause.

I hope he hits 18 and changes his name, both the stupid "Vault" bit and his last name just so he's never associated with OP.

Wow, if you get this irate over a name, I wouldn't look into politics or religion if I were you. Also, avoid the news.

Why not just name your child "Brick" then. A brick is sturdy as a ************ and it builds shit.

And along with 'Vault', it's a stupid name.

Only if I get to make his middle name Shithouse.

Also, why are people so angry about this? I'm not trying to name YOUR kids.

Sheesh.

It seems like a pretty bad idea to be honest. Everyones already mentioned the unlimited potential for bullying this possesses already so heres another view. You'll be naming your kid after something YOU enjoy, your kid will have to run a shit storm of abuse just so you can snigger to your self every so often and reminisce over that one time you killed a super mutant.

I apologise if this come over as incredibly blunt but its an incredibly silly name! Why not name him/her after one of the characters (one with a real name) then you get the refrence but your kid doesn't have to carry that burden for the rest of his life, I mean seriously what if he's born with blonde hair and a huge head.
For example I like the Beatles so 'John' or 'Paul' would be a potential name if I had a kid however I would never call him 'Eleanor Rigby McLastname' or 'Strawberry Fields McLastname' and I most certainly wouldn't call him 'Yellow Submarine McLastname'.

To be frank, no its a terrible idea and I hope your wife slaps some sense into you for suggesting it.

They aren't pronounced the same. And I'm pretty sure you can't change it until you're 18.

That's cool. I never thanked my parents for my totally normal name either. Wasn't really expecting it.
Let's frame it in a way you'll understand then: he'll think you're a dick head or a moron.

Its a bloody inanimate object. Change your own name if you think its that good of an idea.
