Would naming my kid "Vault" be a detriment to him in life? Or a bonus giving him instant geek-cred?

Would naming my kid "Vault" be a detriment to him in life? Yes, if you actually read the advice that you asked people to give you the general concensus is Vault is a stupid name.. It is definently not Badass... You defend the idea that kids will bully or moke the poor unfortunate Vault by offering up the sagely advice taht these people are just haters.. well im sure that will be great comfort to a bullied 10 year old.

You already state that your going to do your best to steer them towards being a geek, you do realise that geeks don't get the easiest ride through school.

Or a bonus giving him instant geek-cred? NO. even on a game forum the people are telling you its a stupid idea.

If you are seriously thinking about kids and not just trolling(which im sure you are) you have some serious growing up to do. This isnt about you! its about setting your kid up with the best oppertunities and a name is one of the things they are going to use a lot...
I like how people cite the thread and it's comments without actually reading it.

I say that because had you actually read it, instead of coming in guns-a-blazing, you'd realize that there are several people who also found it cool, others who were indifferent, people who disliked it, but said so in a helpful way, and yes, many, many ignorant haters.

Guess which you are? I'll give you a hint, see where you wrote "stupid idea" instead of "questionable idea" or "risky idea" or "problem-creating idea".

Ive wasted far too much of my time reading this thread and a few people have said its badass usually had names such as falloutfanboy1010.. or because they are taking the piss out of you..

You dont seem to be taking the main point of people who have offered you advice. Its a stupid name! Instead you are just argumentative and rude. You have latched onto any praise that people have offered you like a dog with a bone.

Call your spawn whatever you want matey. I will personally be the first one to offer consolation to Paul Vault McIdiot because he had not choice in the matter...

Its a shame some people are incapable of taking advice.

don't bother replying as I won't be cheking this thread again.
Thanks. This is me replying. That is you reading it.

Yeah. I just blew your mind.

Neither is grammar, apparently. ^_^ Dude, no need to get aggressive, please forgive me for not taking the time to read the 280+ posts. Plus I'm on your side.
If she's cool with it, and if you like it, then I say "why the hell not".

Sorry, but at this point, I'm defending my opinion against a wave of stupid.

I humbly apologize.

Also, the hyphen was a play on the old song that goes "Reading is fuuu-uuun, yes reading is fun-damental."

OP, as others have mentioned, why don't you make Vault your own name? It's certainly a better idea than forcing your own stupidity onto your child.
I REFUSE TO ANSWER THIS ANOTHER 12 TIMES.

READ, DAMMIT.
I doubt you have have answered why you won't take upon your own retarded name.

And lol, capslock. How cute.
Look, someone that can't navigate the SAME PAGE THEY ASKED A STUPID QUESTION ON.

And thanks, I like it too. I wish I could add bows and rainbows.
You seem quite mad, bro. Seems like you're starting to realize what an awful name Vault is.

But you have yet to answer why you feel the need to force it onto your unborn child and now take it yourself.
lol, yeah, I mad. Mad at whatever educational system you grew up in.

I answered your inquiry on the very same page you asked it, sir. If yoy lack the skills and ability to read it, I cannot help you.
You said that if someone paid you for a name change, you'd do it. That is no excuse man. Vault is such a terribad name that not even you would want it. Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic.

Also, I grew up in a house.

No worries, I get it, it can get frustrating. Then again, what were you expecting, this *is* the Internet after all! ;)
It sure isn't a name I wouldn't have picked for my kid, but I've read soooooo much worse on some other forums. My policy is "to each his own" anyhow.
Damn, I don't know that song. XD I'll have to look it up, because that's why I didn't get it.
Congrats on the bundle of joy! =)

Saved all your growing for when you were at home, huh? Good call. You're like, what, 3, 3 and a half foot tall by now?

Also, what's 'absolutely pathetic' is the fact that I'm pretty sure you just now realized your derpness and found the scroll button and feel pretty stupid about it.

gg. Back to 4chan you go.

Thanks, bro. Yeah, my shields were pretty good at first, but after, as you said 280+ posts, they were getting too thin. Again, my bad, and thanks. ^_^

Pretty much right up there.^

Yeah, I'd like to name my kid (if it's a boy) Vault. Don't ask me why gender matters, but Vault doesn't seem like a girly name to me. It represents hidden treasures and the ability to literally leap any obstacle. Plus, it's kind of avant-garde.

Also, for a while, on my game-broadcasting channel on another site, Vault is part of my screen name, and that was my default nickname given by my fans, so it'd kind of add that sense of Jr. to his name without actually adding Jr. (I'm a lot like Indiana Jones in my opinions on the Junior moniker.)

Anyways, am I setting him up for a lifetime of torment, or am I giving an awesome, life-long gift? What do you think, Escapists?

(Note: I don't really consider this politics, but if any mods believe that it is, please, feel free to move it to that forum. ^_^)

EDIT: I mean as a middle name, not a single name like Madonna or Jesus. So, he can pick which he goes by, Vault, or whatever first name I give him.

EDIT 2: Oh well, I've learned what I wanted to... he'll have to put up with ignorance... big shocker. That'll happen regardless, as the world seems split about even with heartless d-bags and people that realize 'A rose by any other name" etc.

I've decided I'm going for it.

His name will be (firstname) Vault (lastname).

Thanks to all those that were constructive with their criticism without resorting to name calling or blind hatred, and those who supported this unique name.

EDIT 3 (REALLY?): My wife is cool with it.
My now-ex-gf said she would strangle me if I named our child Caboose.

Bum-chicka-bump-bump

this goes into the "drunk tattoo" kind of thinking imo, this will start to sound like a bad idea over time anyway

what does the mother of your kid think of this anyway?

and if youre trying to give him "geek cred" ... why are you assuming he wants it? are you dictating in advance what your child will like or dislike?

lastly asking for advice on some online forum is the worst idea for babynames ever, just a step below "if i get 10000 like my wife will let me call our baby megatron" facebookgroups.

Think this through!
Done and done. The answers to all your inquiries and concerns can be found countlessly throughout this thread.
yeah i read back and wow ... way you respond to people that have the best interests of your child in mind ... i feel sorry for your kid

i hope this is a troll from the bottom of my heart

Heartless D-bags who care enough not to have you give a kid a horrible name. Ignorance from people speaking from experience and being honest.

You decided from the get go you wanted this name and you just wanted attention. Most people are trying to put you off it out of honest concern and your blowing them off and making fun of it. Why did you even make this thread if you roundly troll anyone who disagrees with you while asking for their opinion?

How about calling him bunker after the Brotherhood of Steel bunkers?

Joking aside. Honestly I've heard a lot worse names for children. Some of the fucking names celebrities come up with for their children will scar them for life.

That'd be like naming your kid Nintendo, or Sega, or Capcom.

What you TC, and an uncountable number of parents don't realize is that their kid isn't an extension of you. They're their own identity, and the sooner you realize that, the better.

Don't stupidly name your kid after some company that makes a video game series you like. Just... just don't, okay?
Very, very well put.

Because "Herp derp they'll get made fun of" is not a valid argument, and that's all I'm getting from some people.

Sigh. ONCE AGAIN, the reference to Fallout is secondary. I mainly just think the name sounds cool.

And it's not like naming him any of those, as those are specifically video game consoles. Vault has as much reference to a video game for your average schmoe as spoon. Vault, to me, just sounds better.

Also, my child is a DIRECT extension of me. Hell, even by definition. That's fact and opinion right there, summing up how I feel about that particular statement. If you come from my body, are supported and protected by me, you ARE MINE. I'll direct you, by the best of my abilities, along the path I choose for you, until you gain what I deem full sentience. Once you're an adult, you're free to change any opinions or behaviors you want. Sorry, if trying to play Super Mario with you is so goddamn evil. Quit crying and grab those sticks. You're up.

I can't believe so many people don't think that Vault is a super manly name. I am genuinely shocked by this. The word itself is great: It's short and impactful, and as an existing English word it scans instantly when read. It's only got great connotations: A place of safety, reliability, and security; or a powerful leap over an obstacle. That's an amazing first impression.

There are pitfalls with unusual names of course, but don't forget that unusual names are always memorable, and that's good more often than it isn't. And as unusual names go, Vault is fairly unpretentious and isn't too obviously attached to any popular franchises, and the word sounds enough like a mundane name that the novelty of a unique name and the word's connotations shouldn't be able to overpower your impressions of the person like they do with names that are too loaded with meanings or are too far outside convention. Unusual, but not too unusual.

I'll grant that the thread has been resoundingly negative, but don't take this as an indication of how people are actually going to react to a person with the name "Vault". A lot of this has been red-faced blustering about parents who give their kids weird names, which is directed at you personally, not your son. It's an awesome name, you've got a boring first name as a back up, I think you're right to go for it.

"Hi, my name is Vault"

Has a certain ring to it, doesn't it? Nope, still horrible. Unless it's Volt and you have a Russian accent.

That's definitely a way to sugar coat "A place where you store shit".

Sir, (or madam, shit, I dunno), thank you for being reasonable and logical. Some people can't get past "omg they'll be made fun of!", like somehow not giving your kid a slightly different name is an immuno-virus against bullying.
