Would naming my kid "Vault" be a detriment to him in life? Or a bonus giving him instant geek-cred?

Well, I guess it's a step above naming the young lad "Sue".

Out of curiosity, was "Oven" or "Table" out of the question? If I were to have named something completely arbitrary, I'd rather have it along the lines of "Doc" followed by the middle name "Holliday". (j/k)

I had so many things that I want to say on this from the effects on a child's psychology to the future employment prospects (Yes, a name actually has been proven to affect the chance of getting hired) to more insulting things like the maturity level of naming your kid after something in a video game or the standard "this is why gamers should not procreate" comment.

BTW, how do you know your kid will be into those things? Your plan to shove it down his throat seems like a good way to have it backfire in the same way that your parent's attempts to shove things down your throat probably backfired as well.

But I'll skip all that if only to not turn this into a flame war and just give you the most practical solution that I can think of:

Get a pet instead and get these impulses out of your system. Pets don't care what you call them. Dogs are happy to see you regardless and cats won't acknowledge you anyway.
It's not throat-shoving, it's instructed easement. Think of it like something mundane, like fishing or gardening, and you'll get what I mean. Of course, if he's not into games, he's not into games. I was hoping that came across more as a joke. I mean, sure, I'm going to try and introduce them to him, but it's ultimately up to him as to whether or not to pursue it as a true interest.
In fairness, you're asking us if you should name your kid after a place in the Fallout series so it's kinda hard to tell what parts are jokes and what is serious.

And it's not just an impulse, I've been thinking about it for a few months now.
I said "impulses". An impulse is: "I think I'll buy that obscure Kung-Fu movie that I just saw in the bargain bin." Impulses are those things that roll around in your brain that sound really cool but you kinda know you shouldn't but you really want to try this and so you grasp around for any way to talk yourself into it (including asking internet message boards) for days or weeks at a time until you give in and, the next day, we're watching the Youtube video of some dude who decided to combine hang gliding and snowboarding off their neighbor's roof with a pair of ferrets in his pants and the amusingly tragic results that followed from that experiment.

Don't pressure him into athleticism, especially if you're enough of a nerd to name your kid after a structure found in a post-apocalyptic RPG.

Sounds like a middle name in my opinion. But if you for for a middle name you could make his first "Deus" ;D

Not actually correct but a any guesses where I got that from?

Ooh, if you do, I hope it's a girl. Just think of all the awesome pick-up lines drunken guys in bars can use concerning her 'vault'!

Also, if you can't decide, there is only one thing to do: make a 'if this gets liked X times..'-Facebook page and let the plebs decide.

If this wasn't a gaming website, I'd not have drawn the connection between the name and the game.

Whether or not the kid gets mocked isn't a result of it's name, but how it acts. Calling it Vault will mean for the first few years of life it'll fucking hate trying to spell it's name.

If I was your son, and you had named me vault, the moment I turn 18 I would punch you in the head, move out and get a name change, if you honestly think this is a good idea maybe you should go legally change your own name to vault and see how LIVING with it would be

Or play it safe. Name him **Actual name** Vault Mclastname. That way if he truly hates Vault with a passion he can just use the first one.
Fixed that for you. He could just use Vault as a nickname that way.

But yeah, I would hate my parents forever if they named me Vault.

I'm genuinely surprised at the amount of hate and name-calling I'm getting for something as simple as a name.

Thanks, though. If some of you are the types of people that he'd deal with in life, I don't want him to have to.

Middle name maybe but not first. You'll probably have to explain what it means though.

I think your missing the point that this child won't be you. He may not even like fallout, or geek culture. Case in point, my father was a hell of a sportsman, who enjoyed an eclectic mix of sports at every opportunity. I, on the other hand, become bored to tears at the mere mention of football or rugby because IM A DIFFERENT PERSON.

Sure, your offspring may enjoy the same pastimes as you, but if they don't then you've saddled them with a name that they'll come to hate.

Absolutely not. Have you forgotten how fucking cruel kids can be? Your opinion on the quality of this name is purely subjective, you can't expect everyone to appreciate it. It would be a stupid and selfish thing to do.

Oh and your kid is not a copy version of you. It is a new being, not some avatar that you can slip into when your own body becomes too old. Forcing your beliefs on your child will only make him resent you in the long run.

Overreacting, much? The only reason you had to ask here was because you already knew it wasn't the right decision to name your kid Vault. You were just hoping a bunch of random people on the internet who liked games would go "OH MY GOD! THAT IS AN AWESOME NAME FOR A KID BECAUSE IT HAS TO DO WITH A VIDEO GAME!!!!" and convince you it was the right choice, am I right?

Please keep in mind that you are naming a human being, not a dog.

Maybe you should try a nice simple name like, Frank, or Alex, John, Max, Alfred, George, Ben, Peter, Robert, Dale, Harry, Tom, Patrick, Jim, Henry, Clark, Ash, Cristopher, Owen, Theo, Leo, Tyler, Martin, Bart, Matthew, Daniel, James, Lewis, Noah, Adrien, Bill, Charlie, William, Andy, Wayne, Bob, Wallace, Nick...

You get the idea.

That's the thing though... kids are going to make fun of whatever they want, for any reason. Being named John Smith has never saved anyone from bullies. It's going to happen either way, and if it's about something as subjective as their name, I'd be more than happy to point out how I banged each of those bullies moms last night.

Pretty much right up there.^

Yeah, I'd like to name my kid (if it's a boy) Vault. Don't ask me why gender matters, but Vault doesn't seem like a girly name to me. It represents hidden treasures and the ability to literally leap any obstacle. Plus, it's kind of avant-garde.

Also, for a while, on my game-broadcasting channel on another site, Vault is part of my screen name, and that was my default nickname given by my fans, so it'd kind of add that sense of Jr. to his name without actually adding Jr. (I'm a lot like Indiana Jones in my opinions on the Junior moniker.)

Anyways, am I setting him up for a lifetime of torment, or am I giving an awesome, life-long gift? What do you think, Escapists?

(Note: I don't really consider this politics, but if any mods believe that it is, please, feel free to move it to that forum. ^_^)

EDIT: I mean as a middle name, not a single name like Madonna or Jesus. So, he can pick which he goes by, Vault, or whatever first name I give him.
most BADASS name ever...seriously anyone with a name like vault (real life or otherwise) cant be anything but pure concentrated awsomeness

No, I was actually looking for opinions. I mean, of course I'm biased, I fucking came up with the idea. And sure, I'm going to be dejected when it's not adored by everyone... or at least when people tell me out and out "It's a stupid fucking name and you're stupid for doing it/I'd punch you in the head when I turned 18/etc."

Sure, I was hoping for a little bit of lenience from fellow gamers, especially Escapists, but man, this was kind of unexpected in it's fervor.
