Would You Buy A Console For One Game?

I would, but no such game exists yet for current gen consoles. It doesn't help that now consoles are £350-£450...buying a console use to cost £130-200 max so it's over double what they ought to cost. The price of "that one game" is much higher now.

Of course with cross-platform development, the only games that can sell a console to me now are the exclusives, and this gen there haven't been any I care for. I'd like to play infamous, but won't buy a console for it. I'd like to play Forza 5 and Horizon 2, but not enough to buy an xbone.

SNES had SFII. N64 had Rare's best games ever. GC had RE4. And nothing after that :-(

To be honest, one of the biggest selling points of a console now for me, would be the ability to play homebrew and mess about with it. I'm not talking about piracy, I have no interest there. Just the ability to extend the functionality beyond the manufacturer's restrictions. I like the tinkering (sometimes) and there's often great stuff that can be done with a modded console. If one of the new consoles got modded, I'd probably buy it.

The issue is most of those exclusives I have so little info about them I cant possibly look forward to unproven, untested, unreviewed products that are months away and going to be buried under mountains of hype. Im just not a guy that buys into the hype. The other issue, specifically with Uncharted, infamous, and last of us, is I could care less about them. Just because a system has exclusives doesnt mean I want to buy them. Its a subtle but important difference

Funny that you should mention the "japanese experience" because a large number of japanese indie developers are focusing on developing for the PC. Not only that but many developers like Square and Fromsoft are seeing that theres money to be made on the PC as well. Theyre releasing games for us and hopefully other developers will follow their example. I know theres already people asking for Persona 5 to be ported to PC

Well, for starters, the articles read that Japanese developers are going over the Mobile Arena and then FTP MMO since piracy is on the rise in the orient. Final Fantasy XV will come the PC, so good for you! you'll finally be privy to the production value sorely missing on the PC platform.

And shall I venture out to say that you're a PC only user? That's because there's a commonality between these kinds of users. Whenever anyone starts talking about untested and unproven, it's either about (a) console hardware, (b) AMD GPU or (c) third party software. It's never spoken about SONY exclusives. And there's a reason for that.

Just to name a few: NaughtyDog and SuckerPunch and TRICO (Shadow of the Colossus) are all hyped because they live up to it in EVERY GAME THEY PUT OUT. Infamous 2 pretty much refined everything in great in I. Uncharted 2 outdid its trailer. It's a hallmark for 3rd Person Shooters, still unbeaten -- that is, until 4 comes out. Uncharted 3 was nitpicked with an all pro standard, but it's everything hyped to be. Need I elaborate about Last of Us?

And now the new generation.
Digital Foundry on Second Son [http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-vs-infamous-second-son]
"The presentation is meticulously clean, almost pristine - operating with a full 1920x1080 framebuffer alongside a modified form of SMAA T2x that stands apart as the most impressive utilisation of post-process anti-aliasing we've seen on ANY PLATFORM."

They're given a stack of cash and SONY's wave of approval to make any game they want; and they outdo themselves.
These developers aren't Ubisoft. They aren't EA. Whatever you see in the trailer, you're getting in the game. The Uncharted 4 [http://www.eurogamer.net/videos/uncharted-4-60fps-trailer] IN-GAME DEMO trailer looks better than any game in the industry @ 1080p60 to date. And guess what, it will run at those specs and look that good the entire way, because that's what NaughtyDog does.

After the disappointing comparison of Ubisoft's amazing 2012 E3 Watch Dogs demo to what was actually released, I will never trust a 3rd Party Publisher again. The PC version of that game barely looks better, but with more pop-in and frame rate issues; and that was a game PC users kept trumping. So I don't blame your cynicism toward developers and publishers, if only to add that it belongs solely on the PC platform.

I've done this before but it's always with the knowledge that something else will inevitably come out during the console generation. I bought a PS3 for Rock Band but I wound up owning like about 8 games when the generation ended.

If I ever bought a console or PC for just one game and NEVER expanded the library than it would not be worth it.

I bought a PS Vita so I could play Persona 4 Golden, essentially paying 300 dollars for that game.
It was well worth it
Pretty much the same thing here. I paid £150 for the Vita and Persona 4 Golden and I have played only 100 hours so far, on my second playthrough. TO be honest if the system provides me 100+ hours of entertainment for £150 it is well worth it.

I'm currently annoyed that I may HAVE to buy a PS4 for Bloodborne. There is literally nothing else I want, every good game these days is either on PC or WiiU. It's because of that that the PS4 annoys me more than the Xbone. At least the Xbone is shit and all it's game are shit, the PS4 is shit but is holding a game I want hostage.

Never. Now I will buy a console when the game I'm waiting for comes out but I know there are other games on the system that I want to play.

Hmmmm... OK, let's say that it was a new Grand Theft Auto game, and all the reviews had been good (score of 7/10 or more), and it's positively NEVER coming out on any other platform... then yes, then I would buy a console just for one game.

Using my 3DS purchase as an example, I bought it because I needed one to play Pokemon X/Y, but I didn't buy the console just for playing that one game.

I've always found that whenever I get a system with a game (or set of games) in mind, I always seem to find more games I like after I own the system, to the point where I probably enjoy those games as much if not more than the game I was originally after.

I got a PS3 for Uncharted, but found infamous, journey and more. I got a WiiU for Nintendo stuff, but I've suddenly got into Monster Hunter, Wonderful 101 and (recently) Hyrule Warriors. Never had any interest in them in the past, but when I saw them on the shelf I thought I'd give them a shot. That introduced me to so many games and series, just looking for something to play on the systems.

I bought many consoles for that one exclusive game that i love.
I bought Playstation 1 for Crash Bandicoot.
I bought N64 for Ocarina of Time.
I bought Dreamcast for Shenmue.
I bought Ps2 for Jack and Daxter.
I bought Gamecube for Wind Waker.
I bought Xbox 360 for Red Dead Redemption.
I bought Wii for Mario Galaxy.
I will buy a Wii U for the new Zelda game. in fact there are games that i want to play now but im waiting for a price drop.

but on all those platforms that i own i found plenty of other games that i enjoyed very much and i think its nearly impossible to only like one game from each platform.

No.

I'm dying to play Sunset Overdrive but I'm sure as fuck not paying over £400 for the privilege of playing it.

If you're buying a console, make sure there are enough games out for it (or at the very least announced) that you're interested in. Unless you have fucktons of disposable income and the £400 doesn't really make a difference.

To be fair, I did pretty much buy the PS4 for Bloodborne but while it is the game that finally convinced me to buy it, there are many other games on the system that I know I'll enjoy.

I was going to pick up an Xbox One to get Halo: The Master Chief Collection and then Halo 5: Guardians and whatever else down the line, but then it hit me that spending around £300 on a console and then another £100 on top of that to get the game, XBL and a headset adapter made me realise that it was a stupid ass idea. I might pick up one when it goes down in price, but right now it is just not worth the price for one single franchise, especially considering that I have a PC and every multiplatform game will be on that, so its not even like I would end up getting some other games, it wold have been just for Halo.

Then again, come to think of it, I got a gaming PC (£600 at the time) solely to play World of Warcraft, so I guess that I already kinda did buy a platform for one single game. Oops.

I bought a Vita solely for Persona 4 Golden initially. I got other games afterwards but for a while it was my p4g machine. I'm currently considering buying a 3DS for the imminent release of the gen3 pokemon remakes. If I have spare cash I can easily justify it.

Absolutely. Done it loads of times. Depends on your disposable income I guess.

In practise very few consoles only have one game that you want or have some interest in.

I mean I bought a PS3 for TLoU but then I thought "hey why not try Uncharted, Beyond Two Souls, Heavy Rain, Journey, GT etc".

I wouldn't have bought a console for those games (clearly, as I didn't buy one until TLoU came out) but it wasn't like I bought my PS3, finished TLoU and thought "well I better sell the console now".

I'm considering buying a semi used ps3 for The last of us and maybe god of war, killzone and some other stuff that will never reach PC. My uncle bought it new for my 4 year old cousin, but she got bored with it in a few days so i'm thinking of buying it from them. But still i'm worried that it will become a paperweight after i'm done with those titles.

I did. Wii. For Wind Waker.
I did have a few other games in mind I wanted though.

WARNING - Massive tangent ahead. Read at own risk.

My usual rule is, for a console to be worth a purchase, there needs to be at least three games released that I want. I broke that with the Xbox One, but I now have Minecraft,[footnote]For some weird, goddamn reason, I can't do solo on PC. Only multiplayer. Solo Minecraft on console, easy.[/footnote] FIFA 14 (soon to be redundant, thanks to friend. I'm not getting 15 and I don't like single player), Battlefield 4 (got some paid-for EA Access from said friend and, Destiny (soon to be traded towards Halo MCC). I also had Watch_Dogs and Tomb Raider, but traded them once I was done. Do that a lot, I do.
I have other games downloaded and install, like the free Games with Gold stuff, but I only mentioned those I play(ed).

Would I buy a console and use it for only one game? No, that would be fucking stupid.
Could one game make me buy a console? Maybe, if the price is right and there are other games I want on it.

I really wanted a Wii to play most of the Nintendo exclusives, most notably Twilight Princess. I bought it last year for $50 on eBay, and I got a bunch of other games for it. I wouldn't have bought it near launch just to play Zelda.

I would also love to play Sunset Overdrive as I am used to be an Insomniac fan (until they started releasing trash such as Fuse, All4One, Full Frontal Assault and Into the Nexus), and it looks like they're back on their game with this. But I'm not buying an Xbone for it. It's $400 and most of the other exclusives on it don't interest me.

I'll probably buy a 360 in a year or two when it's dead and I can get it for ~$60, so I can play Gears, Halo and Fable.

I have done it, twice now. I bought an original Xbox for Halo 1 and 2, then I bought a 360 for Halo 3. I dont really regret either, the original Xbox was cheap as shit since I bought it second hand, although apart from the Halo games I didnt get much use out of it, especially since I also owned a PS2 and the Xbox had a pretty weak library in comparison. It also became obsolete very quickly since I bought a 360 only about a year afterwards.
I dont regret the 360 either, I got a lot of playtime out of it, I only got rid of it recently when all the Xbone controversy was happening and I decided I didnt like Microsofts policies on gaming very much.
