Yeah, but then you get the propaganda in some medias balancing this fact with showing the Vietcong as merciless, so I suppose it depends on the writer. I guess it's less prominent now that we're coming out of the COMMUNISM=EVIL phase.

Yea, so long as it's done well and is a good game. Though I don't see many game companies making England out to be the 'bad guys' much...we'd rather be drinking tea!
Yeah most game companies much prefer us as the American side kick...

It's usally America having a boxing match with the Russians or Germens and we're there in the Yank corner with water shouting out support... Poshly.

Yep true. But I don't like that (as true as it may be in real life) In war games we should be remembered for our huge empire we once had!

I would LOVE to play a game where America is the enemy. I think it would be quite fun to play against something other than Russia. I don't know what is with people and their Russian hate these days...

I wouldn't mind, as long as my country aren't stereotyped in an annoying way.

It would be pretty retarded to have a war game with either Canada or Switzerland as the bad guys. Now if it were a complete satire, I might give it a look.

Sweden as the bad guys? Maybe if we dig deep into our Viking roots. But yeah, as long as it doesn't portray the people in the present in this universe as baby-eating Nazis. Maybe if we were misled by a vicious leader, or it is set in a future where our morals failed to reach our descendants.

*sigh* So, would I play a game where my country is the evil side of conflict? Well, I'm german... we had plenty of time to actually BE the bad guys throughout history. And even though I hate how the Nazis are shown in games and films (you know, not every soldier was a Nazi. Many of them were forced. And we do NOT have evil voices and shitty accents. Hell, I don't know when I actually heard a "good" german accent in any media. And why the hell was Dr. Braun in Fallout 3 a german? Just because he is a bad guy he has to be german? Geeze, all this cliché. Why didn't you gave him a Swastika-badge and a Luger, Bethesda? -_-), I really like WWII games. Well, not all of them. But Call of Duty 2... is just awesome. I still play it, sometimes. The difficulty settings, level design, weapons, it was just really really good. Return to Castle Wolfenstein? That one was good, too. And it was funny (though quite censored here in Germany. But I won't talk about that, or I might write 2 pages just about that. I hate censorship.). But the new Wolfenstein? (Why the hell didn't they put a number behind it?) I didn't like it. It didn't have anything to do with WWII, apart from some weapons and shitty german accents, of course. And I didn't like the gameplay. Just once I would like to see a "Germany as the bad guys"-game from a german developer, from the perspective of a german soldier. That could really make for some emotional scenes. But NO, everyone is just going for the "you belong to the Allied Forces. Go out and shoot Nazis with shitty accents!"-approach. Or the "you are an american badass soldier that can take out a terrorist base all by himself! Go and shoot terrorists!"-approach. Or the "Russia has gone mad/communist again. Go and kill people with russian accents!" (Again, geeze! What does America have against Russia? Cold War is OVER, Russia does NOT want to attack America.)

So, how would it be if someone else would be the bad guy? Well, it seems that developers have a problem to find new enemies. It's either Germany, Russia or "Middle East Terrorist Badguys". Or mercenary organisations (PMC, that's the name, isn't it?). What about a game were America is the bad guy (And I mean America, not "Corrupt Industrialist from America" or "American PMC")? I mean, hey, you're quite close to be the bad guy, I think. (Don't want to say that Germany is innocent since WWII - always selling weapons to everyone, old German tradition. There are jobs to be saved, right... Frau Merkel?). I am talking about Bush's time, of course. I don't really like Obama, but he's smarter than Bush (well, being smarter than Bush isn't really a challenge. Who the hell voted him? You even had Al Gore to vote for! He is no saint, but the lesser evil compared to Bush.) and he won't start too many wars with partly innocent countries. (Oh good lord, this sounds bad. But explaining what exactly I mean would take far more time and space. Just accept, please. Don't beat me. ^^)
Well, where was I going with that? Oh, right, America as the bad guys. Here, nice setting: America stops listening to the UN (well, they never really listened. But I mean that America says "well, do what you want, we ain't listening! Talk to the hand!) or anyone else. They start to invade *insert middle east country with oil and without too much terrorist support*, but this time, they can't even barely justify it. They are told by the UN or the EU or a coalition of EU and Russia (or something, you get the idea) to stop and pull back, or... well, America just asks "OR WHAT?!". War. Now that would be a fresh setting for an Ego-shooter.
Or what about China? I mean, they would be on my list of "badguy-states". (EDIT: Hey, what about "Operation Tibet freedom? ;D )

Oh, and game developers? Make better german accents. Just take some germans and let them read in english. I am tired of "Oh heiliges Fledermaus, Fräulein Meier, say zat akäin! Bratwurst Sauerkraut Hitler Nazi!". Please?

Oh... this post is bigger than I planned... forgive me.

In most war games the story is a big laugh anyway and there is a bad guy simply because someone has to be. Nazis are fair game, for example. Russians are a bit harder though, since they still exists and aren't all evil bastards.

Anyway, no, not really. It would just be weird. Holland never does something in a war. (Although we helped in the second Gulf War, which, I believe, makes us the bad guys anyway.)

OT: ive never played a game where america is depicted as bad but i wouldnt have any opposition to playing it, as long as it's a good game i'm alright with it.
Never played dead rising? MW2 America is kinda the bad guy, but just because their confused. Fallout games where the government is crazy evil?
Actually I don't think there are any games that make America out to be evil, and their are very few that make other COUNTRIES evil either. In total war, civilizations whatever theres no real evil countries just countries you want to kill. Games against Nazis aren't against Germany, their against Nazis although Nazis once controlled Germany they are used to represent basic evil people. You could play a game against skinheads in america? or for example racists in america? But very rarely are their games that make actual countries out to be evil. Please give me examples if there actually are some though.

The word you're looking for is moot.

America wouldn't be the bad guys, more like the bad guy's easily-led dupe. It would only bother me if it was presented as a black and white issue. A second American Civil war would be rather interesting as a game.

Know which country will never get portrayed as a villain in a mainstream release? Israel.
