If it was Old Imperial British forces... yeah, I'd be cool with that.

See that generation is not much loved, it is associated with racism via brutal colonial rule and callous cruelty in the mindset that led to the wholesale slaughter in the the First World War.

OK, they did have ROCKING moustaches (Captain Price) and beards.

To OP: MW2 plot totally sucks, and was created only to be vibrant and controversial - Kotick does not want to make good games, he wants to make good selling games. There really is no thing in MW2 that is really distracting - every minute of this game is filled with so much of bullsh**, that everything seems like just another idiotic thing.

My country would not ever be "The Bad Guys", because Poland was always the victim, and we were never associated with any kind of terrorism etc.. The only possibility to make us bad guys, would be to make a ton of additional story that would make that have sense, so the game would have to be good, and i like good games.

America can never be the bad guys. So your point is mute.

Your move Escapist, tread softly
America could never be the bad guys because no developer would have the balls to make them the bad guys - imagine the sales they'd lose.

OT: I'd play as someone fighting against the British.

If you're so "patriotic" that you can't even play a game in which you fight your own country then you're a pathetic moron.
If we American's are the best at everything (not saying we are) then we have to be the best at dying as well as killing!

THIS SOLVES EVERYTHING!

I know this is for fun, but it's pretty much true, though.
Individual Americans are not questionably aggressive... although their foreign policy from 1945 on has been.

personally, I have a huge problem with any country being so beligerent.

I would argue that the "War on Terror" should have been lead by the US intelligence communities as opposed to the military.
I know it's all very well to have the benefit of hindsight, but there were serious misgivings by a lot of insightful, intelligent rationale Americans about the war for good reason.

It's just a shame that yet again the American people and the rest of the world have to pay the price of the hubris of a few in Washington.

As for the actual topic's question...

I really can't see the Irish as being the bad guys in a video game.... maybe as a spoof...

EDIT

Ok, odd game analogy... Splinter Cell, to my mind offered the best effective means of combatting the type of modern terrorists- Intel all the way.

The word you're looking for is moot.

America wouldn't be the bad guys, more like the bad guy's easily-led dupe. It would only bother me if it was presented as a black and white issue. A second American Civil war would be rather interesting as a game.

Know which country will never get portrayed as a villain in a mainstream release? Israel.
It's a joke guys...
Lighten up.

Especially this. It sounds like you hate politicians, not Americans. And believe me, no on here likes the government.
I dated an American for a year so you're dead right, I don't hate Americans.

What I cannot abide is blind violent nationalism dressed up as "patriotism". This goes for every country, by the way. My own included.

The problem being that unfortunately America is the sole superpower and have behaved rather less than responsibly about this fact from the time Bush Jnr. was elected. I find that a shame as his father deftly handled foreign policy without becoming in disastrous endless wars.

As for the Israel thing....
The stuff they get up to is almost too much for video gaming.

I'll lighten up when it stops being a real issue.

I would definatly play a game where my own country was portrayed as "the bad guy". I think it would be an interesting twist on the usual FPS story of "America saves the day!!!". I love my country, but I will not let my patriotism blind me to different views on it. Through discourse knowledge (or entertainment) can be gained.

If its fun, I'll play it. It would have to make a conscious effort to offend me before I would stop playing it.

Well, I am half Russian (I consider Latvia to be a distinct region, but if you're count former USSR areas as Russian, I'd be completely Russian), so I have to live with this pretty much all the time. I don't mind. It actually enhances the experience when the enemy speaks Russian (because I understand what they're saying), and to be quite honest, if someone else isn't going to be attacking the Russians, we'd be attacking ourselves, so the fact I'll be killing other Russians is a given at this point.

Closest i've gotten is Fallout 3, where the US government (The Enclave) is more than a little evil and screwed up. In that case... I had some secret wishes to join them if only to wear some of their cool uniforms, but I ended up just killing them all and taking their clothes. ;P

A game where Germany would be "the bad guys" hmmmm... that would be something completly different to all the other games out there, I BET no one has EVER thougth about that before.^^

I would have no problem at all to play a game in which my country would be "the bad guys" as long as I wouldn't have to play as them. :p

I would and I have. Though how many games have you fought against an evil section of the US Gov't?
Ive even ripped uo New York, my home state plenty of times. So suck that Venezuela.
(Venezuala was upset by Mercenaries 2 and said basically "You would too if it was YOUR home" as if the US doesnt destroy itself in games all the time)

Yes, heil Hitler! In all seriousness, it would be fun to play from the other side to give some more perspective.
Edit: I just noticed that if there is a game letting you be a nazi in first person, not like the rts expansion that's from Company of Heroes, there will probably be a controversial nazi death camp mission.
