Would You Make a Good Soldier?

If I were thrown into a Battlefield, I would make a terrible soldier :

-I don't have the physical condition (I am not that much into sports)
-I couldn't shoot for shit (I never handled any firearms)
-I don't know the basics of real-life tactics

Plus, I don't know how I would react under such pressure and how I would face deadly danger since I've never delt with it.

I'd hope I could make a good soldier though, since that's where I'm turning to to pay for college.
That's sad. Risking getting killed or seriously injured in exchange for a good education. That's about as unfair as it gets...
You should go to my country, public college is better than the private ones, and it's almost free (at least for now. It's about 300?/Year.)

I'm incredibly overweight. Instantly not a soldier at all. Mentality wise, I can follow orders, but I'm not going to do something like "Here...kill this guy." with no apparent reason.

I do the paintball/airsoft thing, and midieval re-enactment stuff. The gun stuff, I'm pretty damn good at, the midieval stuff, I'm average.

If I got drafted for modern war, I'd probably get booted out, due to not wanting to follow a sheperd looking for mindless sheep. I respect the military and soldiers, though not always the orders they are given. That's politics, however.

If someone attacked over here, I'd be a damn fine soldier on my own behalf, working with like-minded people. I love my country and countrymen, and that I could and would fight for.

Video-game play vs. real life is totally different, however. In some games, I get smoted--others, I rock. It's all UI at that point.

If you take "from Swords to Plowshares" in that sense, then yes.
XD

I'm so gonna use "From Swords to Plowshares" at some point.

In a D&D story I'm helping a friend write... That's gonna be one of the chapter names, I'm sure of it.
If you are inclined, I would very much like to read this story!
Sure!

Hope you'll like the Nice('cause he follows the Evil Overlord list, and knows that kindness is better than fear) Elven Necromancer and my Kind & Naïve Half-Orc/Orc(not sure which) Cleric.
I've wanted to read a story about such a villain!

Also, I always cheer the underdogs. Kind & Naïve Half-Orcs/Orcs sound a whole lot more interesting than the usual "Orcs are bad, they make good fodder" type of story. I haven't read a good Orc story since R.A. Salvatore's King Obould Many-Arrows established the first diplomatically and economically stable Orc State.

I am the fast moving, grenade throwing, limited thinking, multi-killing type. So yes, I'd be a good soldier for about 45 seconds. But what a glorious 45 seconds they would be...

No, I certainly don't think I would.

Even disregarding the facts that I've never fired a gun in my life (though I'd like to, I think it'd be interesting) and that I'm not physically fit enough (I don't think I'm especially unfit, just not fit enough for military standards), I'd be a bloody terrible soldier purely because my personality wouldn't mesh well with required military discipline.

I'm a very individualistic person and am not a fan of the whole idea of unquestioning obedience to "superior" figures of authority. In all likelihood, even if I could pass the fitness requirements and shoot worth a damn, I'd still be booted out pretty sharpish when my CO gave me an order I didn't agree with and I told them to go fuck themselves.

Yes, as far as being loyal and understanding tasks to carry out or following orders, I would be a great soldier. However, under fire, I would probably cry. I'm not in great shape either, but hey, that's what boot camp is for, right?

My brother's in the army and he's a good soldier.
I think I can live without being in the military.

Doubtful, since I don't play multiplayer online shooters. That, and I'm not so good at blindly following morally questionable orders.
how do you know if you don't give it a chance, you might be passing up an exiting career in some kind of horrific 'sanitation' squad.

No, probably not. I would be good as cannon fodder though. But at least there won't be any commandos or cheap tactics.

I'm not sure. I good at thinking my way through situations, and I am decent behind a rifle. Then again, there is far more to being a soldier than just being able to shoot.

I'm gonna have to say, "Undecided," because I'm sure I could be... With all of the proper training of course.

One of the last D&D games I DMed I had my players branded as outlaws and hunted all over the kingdom for their unprovoked slaughter of a village of orcs and as they were all 'good' aligned, I stripped them of any alignment dependent powers. Hell, I kept giving them clues that ther weren't walking into the average 'shitpit' orc encampment.

Would you be willing to PM me your DM stories? Or make a story thread if it's too large to tell in a PM? I want to know what happened in this campaign!
