If the main character was stereotypically flamboyantly gay then I would probably be annoyed. If they were like, say, Jack Harkness from Torchwood then it wouldn't bother me at all.

No. Just no.
No? Just no? What, so you're saying you're homophobic for...what reason? Please explain yourself because I have a huge problem with people who hate other people based on something they cannot control.
What, wasn't "humans would extinct" enough of an explanation for you?
I can't tell if you're joking or not, but if you're not, EXTINCT is not a verb you fucking retard. If you are, then I'm glad you can see through their stupidity as well.
Yes, there were two jokes in that sentence: The other person's opinion and the other person's grammar. How depressing that I had to explain it.

as long as it didnt sterotype and constanltly tell me the character was gay, that would be immature enough to make me stop playing

The fact is that one can... it's just that they're all open-ended RPGs like the Fallout games, Dragon Age, Mass Effect (technically), and such. They are player-driven choices and not forced by the game itself.

Personally, if a game was based primarily on the fact that the character was homosexual, or if the player was more or less forced to play as a homosexual, then no, I would not play it. Odds are that the developers would be so hung up on the fact that it would get shoved down the player's throat constantly and it would become annoying and/or uncomfortable.

I love these threads.

I remember reading a discussion about the Doctor Who episode "Waters of Mars", I think it was here, and the issue of one of the peripheral character's sexuality came up, some of the responses were pure gold.

It was the most throwaway of lines you could ever imagine. Basically one of the members of the expedition had a scheduled communication time when he could contact his family. So the scene is him on a video call with his brother in Russia, and the line is something like "oh that husband of mine, he's still ".

Yet it garnered some hilarious criticism of the 'shoving down throat' and 'too much information' variety.

I think it's highly interesting watching people react.

"did anyone ever stop to think that homosexuality could be a natural response to a given species' overpopulation?"

That comment blew my mind.
Actually mass starvation of a spiecies is a standard response to overpopulation, not turning gay. It's more like defect, some sort of mild mental sickness. In nature noone is born perfect so I believe homosexuals just 'pop" here and there once in a while, just like people with cancer or aspergers.
Yeah, I know you're entitled to your opinion and whatever, but fuck you. "Some sort of mild mental sickness." Good thing ignorant opinion isn't supported by facts.

"Gay sex doesn't create babies so there must be some defect." Since when has sex solely been about reproduction? Humans are one of the only species that have sex for pleasure, and not just reproduction. So that argument goes out the window.

I'm confused as to why you even posted, especially since you knew that it would likely make someone mad and start some kind of flame war.

Edit:
OT: Maybe we should try fixing how people look at homosexuals before trying to put them into more games. I read through most of the posts, and many people say something along the lines of "As long as he's not one of those stereotypical gays." That's fine, I don't like those guys either, but I think it's a problem that that's the first thing people think of when homosexuality is mentioned. Also, as someone else mentioned, they already struggle with portraying Blacks and women without overwhelming stereotype.

Also if you're one of the people that said they would feel too uncomfortable with playing a game with a homosexual character, that's pretty pathetic to be honest.
I want no flames in here, my friend. Topic is about gays in computer games so we talk a bit about the whole issue as well.
I explained why I feel uncomfortable. I like to get into the role I'm playing in the game and being gay would make it hard for me as men don't turn me on.
As for the "sex not for making babies" - I'd like to do it in a socratean way of asking you questions but unfortunately It's a forum and my english could be not sufficient for this. Still I'll try to explain to You my strain of thought - sex is a way of securing continuity of our species. We get fun along the way, sure, but if suddenly the entire world would turn homosexual, humans would extinct. Therefore, the main role of sex is procreation, pleasure is a secondary use that is supposed to lure us into the whole "making babies" business so that we survive. Once you accept that, it'll become obvious that there is something wrong with homosexuals. It's a harmless deviation that poses no real threat to humanity, just one of million things that can go wrong in a human but still allow him to prosper and live happily. Still, it's not normal.
Now I know you won't agree with me. The only way I ever convince intelligent people of this belief is, as I said before, through questions. Still I wand to assure you I am not a troll looking for some warm flames. I try to express my opinions in a manner as civilized and polite as possible.

And as always I hear "fuck you" from people who think of themselves better than me, lowly homophobic scum.
Oh I accept that biologically the main point of sex is to procreate, but in today's world, it's mostly about pleasure (save for some societies, probably). I would go so far as to say that most people (at least young people) who have sex have no intention or desire to have children, hence the use of condoms/birth control. They do it for the pleasure. So by your argument, there must be something defective with them.

Also, let's just examine how you think that homosexuality is something that "goes wrong." Biologically, something that "goes wrong" is a disadvantageous trait, making it less likely for that organism to survive. Homosexuality, however, is not a disadvantageous trait; it certainly isn't an advantageous trait, but not a disadvantage at the same time (according to Sigmund Freud. I can even provide a quotation if needed).

And I said "fuck you" not because I think I'm "better than you," but because I'm gay and I actually take offense to having myself being equated to cancer or asperger syndrome.
i just want to say if every one in the world got magically turn gay, the human race wont die, because gay people can still make babies, gay guys would jack off and give it to a sperm doner, lesbians would get some for a baby, and if it came down to it, they would both put on blind folds and do there patriotic duty to keep the human race going.

Probably not. If it was such a fantastic game that even some of the people at my highly Conservative school recommended it, then maybe. But, honestly, it would just be kind of awkward... for me and those who see me playing it.
