Unfortunately, people don't make things like this unless they have some kind of agenda, which means they're going to be bandying about some kind of message ad nauseum. You can hope they won't, but sorry, that's the way it is. They'll be douches about it, whether their issue is being gay, clubbing seals or whatever. And if you say you don't like it, those same people who cry "Tolerance! Love!" will viciously attack you for having your own opinion about things. Either way, as a consumer, I don't have to buy it if I don't want it, and if enough people don't want it, your crappy game will end up in the $2.99 bin at Wal-Mart.

Like many other people, I play games because they're fun, and I don't want to be hit over the head with someone's belief system about anything. Go write a blog if you have some opinion you want to trumpet to the world.

I wouldn't be able to relate and I'd be uncomfortable with any romantic scenes.

I'm a gay woman and I'm writing a comic book with a lesbian main character. Her sexuality is not even a remote focus of the story, but this detail does have me wondering how the story will be received.

I don't know but just make sure your work doesn't flop because it sucks and you accuse people of being ignorant when it really is your work that needs improvement. That just worsens the gay cause. Actually, I think if most gay people did not shove their gayness into the faces of others and yell ignorant when someone asks them to stop, gays would be much much much better received in society - just as all the replies on this thread suggest.

I am pretty sure if I went and shoved my straightness in gay peoples faces and went on and on about how great it is to be straight they would as me to stop as well - and they would have every right to.

Well, I'll forgive that you're just basically unaware of my comic directions, and say that ~IF~ my work flopped, it couldn't be because my main leading role was lesbian (or at the least, not strictly straight). Nor is that my concern. (I'm going to gloss over how that hurts a cause work will have no affiliation with.)

My concern is that because the lead role is a gay woman (or at least not strictly hetro ), it will be at best be comparable to a successful indie film. Fan favorite of gay and bisexual women, liked by the hetro guys hoping for saucy Xena scene, and never taken all that seriously beyond maybe a small cult following.

Although that still sounds pretty sweet. :3 I aim high, nevertheless. If it flops because it turns out to suck, I will only blame the main characters sexuality if all my hate-mail says, "I cannot like your comic book because of her sexuality." Then maybe forgive the "gay cause."

I can still promote the human race THANKS TO SCIENCE (not my own abilities) and artificially impregnate a willing woman who would have my baby.... so whats wrong with bestiality and incest? Why not have a game who's main character likes to have sex with his parents and his dog??

Instead of 'normal', 'accepted' would be somewhat more appropriate.
Since more than just the human species takes part in homosexual acts and practices, both forms are 'normal'.

They are still a minority and are abused for something that they partake in or are, race and religion have been targeted for such reasons.
The difference is motive and the acts in question.

Sheep are not humans, and humans having sex with animals can actually be very harmful to them and damage them internally. It's not healthy for either party.
Incest in humans has been proven to pass down/increase defects and be bad for the gene pool.

Homosexual people are not contributing anything by having sex with their partners, but they are not trying to harm either party (normally).
Homosexuals can still reproduce naturally with the opposite sex if need be, and a lot have.

Anyways, it depends. Simply being gay wouldn't bother me, and if the gameplay was good I doubt I'd care, but if they made an effort to match the stereotypical flamboyant drama queen gay profile, it might irritate me too much to put up with.

That would irritate actual gay men, too. Nobody can stand the flamboyant drama queen gay.

Prrrobably. I'd certainly have no particular problem playing a lesbian character. I would probably be a little uncomfortable playing a male homosexual character if pursuing a homosexual romance was a mandatory part of the narrative. A lot would depend on how well it was written; if I couldn't identify with the character's sexual identity, it's all the more important that other factors not make me disengage from the character.
