Would you play a game with a gay main charater?

I play rpgs, I'm used to androgynous male leads, so I can honestly say that no, I would have no problem with a gay main character, all I really give a damn about are story and game play and I can't see how the main character's sexual tendency would detract from either.

But as for a character that has been written to be gay? I dont see why not. It's just another story, really. Like other gay people, doesn't mean that you're suddenly asked to be gay around them or somehow tricked into being gay. I think it could be an interesting path to go.

I just hope its not like Brokeback Mountain or something... since that just seemed more like a "hey! lets make them gay! and get a bunch of viewers and controversy" storyline for a movie

I'm gay. I play games with straight main characters.

I would prefer that there are at least a few games with gay main characters, and it would be a bit more immersive, but it isn't an incredibly important factor to me that a character that I'm pushing from cutscene to cutscene fit my orientation.

Yeah. Who cares? Although it's a valid thread, I would think we'd have gotten past all this as a community by today's standards. People who say "No! Hell no!" and other such similar responses are as guilty as someone stating they wouldn't play as a different race or ethnicity. So what if they're gay? I'm sure the game wouldn't get the backing and funding if the main character was doing nothing but flamboyantly displaying their homosexuality in gay pornographic virtual activities, like some idiots who would refuse to play the game probably imagine as soon as they hear "homosexual protagonist". So the main character is gay. Now let's all boycott the game because we're xenophobic cavemen stuck in the past century who can't accept other people different than us.

I just realized how much this makes me sound like a homosexual activist haha. That's not even where I intended to go. I could care less whether it happened. The point is I would play a game, even with a main character if the game was a good game to begin with. Basically let me sum it up with this: If I well-known and well-respected company handled the task gracefully, tactfully, and carefully and made a great game for completely other unrelated reasons (gameplay, story, environment, atmosphere, sound, etc.), not only would it show that a main character in a game could be gay, it may also provide critical advertisement with sales. For proof, see "Mass Effect Sex Scene". Controversies are what the video game industry is built on.

No I probably wouldn't play a game where I was forced to play a gay character.
I wouldn't be able to relate and I'd be uncomfortable with any romantic scenes.

This really should have been a poll so we can see what it all sums up like.

No offense, but have you ever played a Japanese / Alien / superhuman or God / or even someone in a completely different profession? You couldn't relate to them either. That being said, the romantic scenes could be off-putting. But as far as I know, the only question is "would you play a main character who's sexual orientation was homosexual?". That could mean you play "Baddy Mc Badass", killing nazis and aliens and saving the world, with call of duty action, and mass effect-like decisions to be made. And the main character just happens to be gay, with no other mention of it. Maybe a snide remark from a friend once in a while.

Instead of 'normal', 'accepted' would be somewhat more appropriate.
Since more than just the human species takes part in homosexual acts and practices, both forms are 'normal'.

As far as I know sexuality is neither religion nor race - please don't ever compare those.

They are still a minority and are abused for something that they partake in or are, race and religion have been targeted for such reasons.
The difference is motive and the acts in question.

Also what if I wanted to have sex with sheep? or wanted to have sex with my family? I am sure I could find others with the same sexual desires... So would that make us a minority being oppressed? - because laws and morals taught in school teach against those things. Should we then promote bestiality and incest? should we? I mean... I can still promote the human race THANKS TO SCIENCE (not my own abilities) and artificially impregnate a willing woman who would have my baby.... so whats wrong with bestiality and incest? Why not have a game who's main character likes to have sex with his parents and his dog??

Sheep are not humans, and humans having sex with animals can actually be very harmful to them and damage them internally. It's not healthy for either party.
Incest in humans has been proven to pass down/increase defects and be bad for the gene pool.

Homosexual people are not contributing anything by having sex with their partners, but they are not trying to harm either party (normally).
Homosexuals can still reproduce naturally with the opposite sex if need be, and a lot have.

Reading some of your other posts, parts of them do seem... hostile. You very well may have good intentions and raise valid points, unfortunately text does not reflect tone.

Also, I have to agree with this guy. The guy he's quoting may have the best of intentions with his defense, but it comes across as a flame war where he's losing sight, and there are flaws in the argument. I have to especially agree with the homosexual vs race persecution. Homosexuals have been persecuted as long as any race, and longer than most.

I'd love to play a game with a gay main character, especially if it were handled casually rather than treated as a significant anomaly. With heterosexual pairings shoehorned into every damn thing, it'd be nice to see a little gay and lesbian content hanging around in a normalized way for once.

I would play a game where one of the main characters is gay like, a party member or major character in the game. However if the character that i played was gay i doubt would play the game. This is not because of homophobia but rather i prefer to make my characters as similar to me as i can. seeing as im not gay i tend to make my characters not gay too.

And in all seriousness, I'm entitled to having my own opinion and as it is fairly reasonable I can defend it. Sex makes babies, gays don't make babies. So there is some defect down there. It's not that I hate tham or whatever, I don't want them to repent or cry over their condition as it is completely harmless and 2 guys or 2 girls prolly have less troubles understanding each other. Still it's silly to call something like that "normal".

But still, calling it a 'condition' can't really be considered normal either, can it?

to be fair though, he didn't call it a fatal flaw or terminal illness, just a defect, like a birth mark except that it has an impact on the person's life.

I think you took what he said and mishaped he was not comparing the plight of jews and blacks to that of gays but saying to that one that does he feel the same why when he sees a black or jew show pride of there race or religon and gays have gone through some bad stuff to that has gone unmention in history, the gays were there with the jew being toruter and exucted during the holocaust and instead of the star of david to wear the had to wear a pink tringal and thats were the pink tringal came from, and is used in gay pride rallys today, not to mention the constent riducal and persuctin historic text such as some of shakesprears work. But if it was the main thing it would be kinda irritating but that is true about any game where the sex life of your character is the main purpose of the game even if the character isn't gay.

im not gunna say no, but i would be reluctnant, because a gay charecter as a specific meanshey are going to emphasize the gay. if they dont bother to bring it up, then it doesnt matter. but i think fora main to be gay, it would have to be important in the game, and frankley, im not that interested in playing a game about bing gayl
