Please do not compare the suffering, torture, and oppression of a people for years because of the color of their skin to the gay plight - where that is a DEVIANCY from the NORMAL (sexuality, ideology, morality, etc).

Or to Jews who suffered a completely different extermination based on their RELIGION.

As far as I know sexuality is neither religion nor race - please don't ever compare those.

Also what if I wanted to have sex with sheep? or wanted to have sex with my family? I am sure I could find others with the same sexual desires... So would that make us a minority being oppressed? - because laws and morals taught in school teach against those things. Should we then promote bestiality and incest? should we? I mean... I can still promote the human race THANKS TO SCIENCE (not my own abilities) and artificially impregnate a willing woman who would have my baby.... so whats wrong with bestiality and incest? Why not have a game who's main character likes to have sex with his parents and his dog??
If my eyes don't deceive me, you just compared the sexual act between consenting human adults with bestiality.
- Charming.
And why shouldn't sexuality be spoken of in conjunction with factors such as creed and ethnicity?
They are all aspects of our life and culture which causes friction between the different factions and their own perception of the almighty norm.
Come to think of it, the one who stands out is religion; being an imposed dogma or a choice rather than a natural construct in the human mind and body.

By the term 'gay', are you implying that every solitary second of their existence they make it obvious that they are homosexual by involving themselves in some sort of erotic activity? You think it's easy to pinpoint who is gay and who isn't? I don't play a game and make judgements constantly, I let the sexual interactions come to me, I don't go looking for it. "Oh yeah, he's definitely gay". It's insane. They don't walk around constantly engaging in public sexual activity and making homoerotic flirtatious comments, it should be incredibly difficult to correctly identify a gay person. I had a friend who for 4 years I never knew he was homosexual. If gay characters are going to be made 'obviously gay' then I'd probably just laught at how batshit insane the developers are and how many gamers they're willing to offend. Would I play a game with a gay main 'charater'? Of course, it would make a nice change to all the ridiculously overly-masculine FPS 100%STRAIGHT meatbuckets of modern gaming. Maybe more companies would be willing to understand what 'differentiation' means.

Wasn't there an Escapist article on this?

No I probably wouldn't play a game where I was forced to play a gay character.
I wouldn't be able to relate and I'd be uncomfortable with any romantic scenes.

This really should have been a poll so we can see what it all sums up like.
No offense, but have you ever played a Japanese / Alien / superhuman or God / or even someone in a completely different profession? You couldn't relate to them either. That being said, the romantic scenes could be off-putting. But as far as I know, the only question is "would you play a main character who's sexual orientation was homosexual?". That could mean you play "Baddy Mc Badass", killing nazis and aliens and saving the world, with call of duty action, and mass effect-like decisions to be made. And the main character just happens to be gay, with no other mention of it. Maybe a snide remark from a friend once in a while.

Just making a point.
I almost believed you, then I noted that you said 'Japanese'. How exactly would I be unable to relate to a Japanese person? That strikes me as racism, yes there are cultural difference but that doesn't stop me relating to them.

If the game is 'giving mass effect-like decisions' then why can't I choose to be heterosexual?
I'm heterosexual, I like playing my games as a heterosexual and I see nothing wrong with my choice to not play homosexual characters. Just like any person can choose to be homosexual.

If the main character being homosexual is a selling point I will not purchase or play the game because it will not interest me.

no, sexuality is not religion or race, but an individual has as much choice over his sexuality as another does about their skin colour.

THIS. Seriously, have you ever thought how you would feel if people told you everyday that you were abnormal and you were not allowed to marry the person you love because a bunch of people who have never met you think that your love is disgusting. Stop making out that one minority has it 'worse' then others, instead unite under the fact that all discrimination is pointless and should be eradicated.

FYI, you can't choose your sexuality any more then your race.
he comes off to me as being equally as prejudiced as people who have been prejudiced to him.
although, it is a different prejudice

Yes, of course I would.

Why the hell not.
Would you not play a character who was black or asian? Of course not. There's no difference.

It sohuldn't even be a factor. When has sexuality affected a character in a game thus far?

And I'm answering honestly. I'm not afraid to have an opinion.
That's smashing. And I'm not adopting any kind of derogatory stance on this; I genuinely think it's a great thing that you are confident and outspoken in your disposition.
- But we'd all appreciate it if you elaborated as to why.
Without argument and insight, an opinion is little more than hot air.

I can't see any game being based around sex being overly appealing to me, much less gay sex. As such, I'd most likely dismiss any game that focuses on being gay as gimmicky or pornographic (as I imagine the majority of gay videogames at the moment are akin to those japanese dating games).

As far as playing a gay character who just happens to be gay in the gameworld (in such a way that it isn't the primary factor of the story) would be equally appealing (if not more) as generic supersoldier 213ax (or whatever).

I wouldn't have much problem with it as long as he wasn't too stereotypical, though I know I would have some problems relating to the character.

Brilliant, well I hope you are ready for the answer.

Appeal.
I'd much rather play a game with a handsome, strong and heterosexual male character than a gay one. Why? Because although I know in my mind that he's only fictional, in my some dark corner of my mind, I'd think "Hmm, he's handsome, I'd like to be the [main female love interest] that he's after"

Same thing applies to female characters as well. I want a strong heterosexual character because I want someone to emulate. I wouldn't want her to be gay because as a heterosexual, I would not want to emulate a homosexual because that is not my preference.

Call it petty, but it is my point of view.

I don't think it'd be easy, let alone a good marketing choice, for a gay character. Not many people will want a game with the slogan being "Our Character's Gay", but at the same time, no game should center around that. If you make him gay and don't make any reference to any sexuality, other than maybe little hints, it'd be strange to see a game centered around gayness, and no company wants to do that. Not because being gay wrong, because the people will think it's awful that a company is either acting out a gay stereotype for a video game, or homophobic gamers will avoid it. If the game was centered around his sexuality, I wouldn't want to play it, even if he was straight. Sexuality IS the game, and doesn't need a port on a video console. If the studio says "it's an amazing game, great graphics-oh, the character's gay- many weapons..." I wouldn't give two shits.
