My grandpa has a few souvenir katanas from WWII when he was stationed in the pacific that I want, but that's it. I only want those because of the history and family value behind them, not because they're katanas.

I better point out that I don't think the katana is a terrible sword. It is a remarkable cutting blade with a very graceful aesthetic sense about it, but it is not this magic sword that is so much more awesome than any other sword ever. It is a product of the materials technology of the people that used it and the styles of warfare that evolved around it, just as the European swords are products of their environment.

I don't think one is inherently better than the other, they were designed to do different things against different opponents equipped differently. As a personal preference I lean toward the more jack-of-all-trades functionality of the longsword over the specialisation of the katana, but both have quite involved and complex techniques that require years of practice and training to master and both the medieval knight and the Japanese samurai are equally as deadly as each other.

Thought I better point out, in case I'm coming off as 'katana's are rubbish man, Europes the place to be!'
No you come across as knowledgable I still have no idea how people can think they know better than centuries of warriors using weapons that clearly did their job, weapons were tested against the enemies of their users, who cares how the viking armies of the 790's would have fared against the cavalry heavy forces of Henry the VIII in the early 1500's it certainly bares no realtion to the fighting effectivness of either force.

A Katana would be completely useless in a zombie apocalypse. Hell, most bladed-weaponry would.
You don't have to reload a blade. I have a copy of - and have read - The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks, and i am afraid to say, you are wrong :p While the ak-47 would be much more preferable to a katana during a hoard rush, never ever be without your silent, dependable, ever-ready, one-shot kill melee weapon with you. Bullets run out. Guns Jam. Noise attracts more zombies. Swords perfect for every occasion? no. Completely useless? not a chance.

Japan is rapidly becoming my favourite country (it's the sushi, manga and samurais...)

So yes.

Katanas are nice but I'd prefer a Sabre. Think I'll just stick with my Kukri for the moment.

Who doesn't want one?!

Oh and as a side note for trivia, the Dreamcast was originally called the "Katana". Might have sold a bit better if it kept that kickass name

You should try a different approach. A violent approach. Great reactions are guaranteed.

I already have one; I use to practice Iaido. Granted, it's plastic, but it's cool to freak people out with it because it looks and feels real. :D

Of course I would. The design of the katana makes it the most state-of-the-art sword ever to have been used.
