Then I would use a bokken. And better to break a bone than chop off a limb.I kinda like my limbs where they are.And my bones can fuck it.Been in my way for far too long.

Why wouldn't I want one? I think it's the most elegant sword, just above a rapier.

I have always been fascinated by swords though. When I get my only place I want to start collecting them

I always wanted a katana. Pretty little swords. But I like all things shiney with sharp edges. I have enough knives on me at any given time to be considered weight training, but a sword would always be good too.

I already own a katana. Two, actually. One is a replica of a masamune blade that I just like to look at and every once in a while take out and the other is an authentic blade I bought. Both I bought because I've studied Shotokan, Kendo and Iaido. Although guns are easier when personal protection is on the line. :p

I should clarify: The 'authentic' blade is not a true authentic japanese blade as very few can afford that. But it is a very high quality blade that was made in the same exact manner as an authentic blade would be. It was made in the US, however.
Unless the steel was made by master steel smith who spent 3 days constantly tending their forge without sleep, and then breaking open their clay forge afterward to send it to the smith, who then makes the blade, then cools it with a process that causes many blades to break, then gives the unfinished blade to a person whose job is solely the sharpening and polishing of the blade (over 20 different sharpening stones are necessary), it was not made in the "authentic" manner.

I want one.And I also want a kendo sword. Why? Because I would practice with the Kendo sword,so I wouldn't accidentally cut something off.
A kendo sword is called a shinai, and you wouldn't train with that, its completely different. You would train using a bokken, and if you don't know how to use a bokken, then you can break bones pretty easily.

Personally i perfer serrated straight swords. i own a katana but its a stainless steel piece of junk. knives also much more better.
Those are one use at best, if it goes in, it will get stuck, and if you ever planned to get it back, you better be standing after you lose it. Curved swords were MEANT for cutting more, the curve allows it to cut and come out cleanly, while straight edged swords were not. A serrated straight edge would be pointless unless it's on something you plan to only use once. You can still get curved knives (kukri, wakizashi)
i dont like stabbing, grazing in the right spot is alot more effective imo. fun thing about having friends/family in the medical field.

I would love to, and plan on, buying a Katana at some point, not just a Katana either, I'm planning on making the first sword in my collection a sword of my ancestry (being Norse), but I find Katana to be very elegant weapons.

Unless you are going for an artery, or a significant tendon, a stab is what you would be going for, and a curved blade is better for slashes.

Unless its a ancient sword then no. I would rather have some sort of American revolutionary to civil war sword.

I had a few cheap ones when I was younger and into that kind of thing but since I've grown up I've really not seen the need. Sure, the might look cool hanging from your wall or whatever but there isn't anything special about it, maybe if I was lucky enough to inherit a real one I would hang it up, but not a cheapo one that 5000 other people have. The whole overrated thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth as well. Yeah, Katanas are well made, but they are not the ultimate killing machines most people think they are.

If I was going to hang something on my wall it would be something unique.

Primarily because I'm pretty sure its fairly hard to get a sharpened one, the ones they sell in malls and online are dull and just for show. Pretty much useless, and makes it essentially a cheap piece of metal on a hilt, that cost you a lot of money.
If one somehow managed to get a real sharpened katana, it would be pretty hard to find some actual classes to teach one how to use the damn thing. Most martial arts classes are a complete load and I'm sure that ones that go into actual useful techniques on how to use a weapon, some that I've experienced are just show/competition movements, are even harder to find.
Without training one would probably hurt themselves pretty badly.
I'd rather find a more practical weapon.
Classes are actually more easy to find than you think, and if you check the news, a lot of break in in the past year, people have defended themselves with a katana against various burglars, assailants, ect. Also, to get a sharpened one, you just have to look in the right place, a mall is not the right place.

The novelty wears off when you get a job, and all your friends have jobs, and all of you are kinda geeky, so now everyone gets a katana, and now your entire group of friends goes 'eh, my katana is better than yours' as they compare katanas.

And then you get to watch them react to the news that you don't care about the ninth katana you've seen that week.
Ugh this.

Everyone who has a bit of dollah buys one, crikey you can buy one pretty cheap nowadays too. I bought mine from an umbrella store of all places.
They're not impressive to own anymore, at all.

I'd probably point out a swanky desk more than a Katana.
Katana? No.

But a fancy desk? Now you're talking. I want one of those big partner's desks that is massive and made out of like a tonne of mahogany or oak. Awesome.

Probably about as useful as a sword in a real home invasion scenario too.

Then go with a boomerang, a kukri, chakrams, and a mariki gusari. As for katanas, the best ones could cut 5 people in half in one swing, through the torso.

Ask yourself this: Would you be more willing to allow sword ownership than gun ownership?

Good luck drawing a daikatana (or nodachi if you prefer) in a house, let alone swinging it.
