Actually, it's not.Mariakitten said:I would want one, perfect weapon for a zombie apocalypse.
You are aware that a Katana is rather unwieldy to be executing seppuku upon oneself, right?iLikeHippos said:I'd want a katana so I could stab myself in the guts whenever I shamed my family
Like at the dinner table, for instance.
I am at a fancy dinner party with other guests and with my entire family, when suddenly... I drop the dinner fork.
Dad looks at me and shakes his head. "You have shamed me, son. Now you must repent this shame on yourself"
Than I could go all like "I have shamed my family", grab the katana, gut myself and fall down to the floor and die.
Than dad would look over at me lying on the floor, catching my last breath and say "It was a good death" and than continue eating undisturbed like everyone else.
...Wait a minute, I don't live in medieval Japan! Ohooooh!

You obviously have no idea about swords if you think a Katana would shatter on bone or steel and did you know Samurai learned an entirely different technique for fighting in confined spaces?Eat Uranium said:I'd rather have a kukri or a hatchet or a falchion. Something I could hit hard with and not be afraid of it shattering on any bones or metal and short enough to swing in the confined area of my house.
You can find sharpened swords pretty easily but you need to be careful, a lot of cheap ones are only half-tang and the blade can actually come flying out of the handle. If you ever buy any sword I would recommend making sure it's full-tang and also preferably from a reputable dealer (there are even still blacksmiths who make real weapons the old-fashioned way). Primarily because I'm pretty sure its fairly hard to get a sharpened one, the ones they sell in malls and online are dull and just for show. Pretty much useless, and makes it essentially a cheap piece of metal on a hilt, that cost you a lot of money.
If one somehow managed to get a real sharpened katana, it would be pretty hard to find some actual classes to teach one how to use the damn thing. Most martial arts classes are a complete load and I'm sure that ones that go into actual useful techniques on how to use a weapon, some that I've experienced are just show/competition movements, are even harder to find.
Without training one would probably hurt themselves pretty badly.
I'd rather find a more practical weapon.
Check out http://www.musashiswords.com/shop/home.php they've got some nice swords, actually I believe there's a guide for this let me google itPatrick Dare said:You can find sharpened swords pretty easily but you need to be careful, a lot of cheap ones are only half-tang and the blade can actually come flying out of the handle.
