Its alwayas katana... I prefer a long spear or claymore. Hell, even decent staff would be better.

Well, I have held one before, and it is pretty heavy for me, so while I'd like one for show, I don't think I'd get any practical use out of it.

I would want one, perfect weapon for a zombie apocalypse.
Actually, it's not.

The number one way to kill a zombie is via severe brain trauma. Using just how sharp a weapon is may work for the first few times, but will quickly become unable to penetrate the skull or become jammed. You could argue that inserting the blade under the skull could work but in practical "oh shit, more than two zombies!" situation, it's just not really possible. However, if you use a bladed weapon that relies not just on sharpness, but also force and weight, then it's more likely to last longer (e.g. European swords (which I will admit, I prefer), besides things like rapiers for obvious reasons). Even then, the best melee weapon to use, as much cited a machete is, would be something like a weighted aluminium baseball. It's got weight, it's got strength (if the weight is applied internally and it's not just hollow) and it's got length. Second best would probably be a hammer, although it lacks the length other weapons have. Although the absolute ideal would be a traditional medieval war-hammer which combines all the things that are ideal to smashing skulls in. Just make sure you can swing it without leaving yourself off balance!

Haha, you can pretty much tell I've research it a bit.

Muahaha, I already own one, as I am a black belt in both Kobudo and Ju-Jitsu =P
I also have staves, nunchukas, sais, and tonfas...

Oh the fun of having deadly weaponry...

They are nice but as with most things in the UK, banned unless you have certain conditions. Namely it was made in Japan before 1954, part of a martial arts group etc.

I'd want a katana so I could stab myself in the guts whenever I shamed my family

Like at the dinner table, for instance.

I am at a fancy dinner party with other guests and with my entire family, when suddenly... I drop the dinner fork.

Dad looks at me and shakes his head. "You have shamed me, son. Now you must repent this shame on yourself"
Than I could go all like "I have shamed my family", grab the katana, gut myself and fall down to the floor and die.

Than dad would look over at me lying on the floor, catching my last breath and say "It was a good death" and than continue eating undisturbed like everyone else.

...Wait a minute, I don't live in medieval Japan! Ohooooh!
You are aware that a Katana is rather unwieldy to be executing seppuku upon oneself, right? :p

Anyway, while the idea sounds nice, I would perfer not to have any cold weapon (and by that I mean a dedicated weapon; knives for use at a table don't count) in my home. I would just be too worried about my nephew getting his hands on it. I'd much rather get a good Swiss army knife.

I'd rather have a kukri or a hatchet or a falchion. Something I could hit hard with and not be afraid of it shattering on any bones or metal and short enough to swing in the confined area of my house.

Why would I? When a Walther P99 does a much better job, and it looks much nicer. Im not of the phantasmagorical mind set where i wish very badly to be some lame anime character.
To quote Max Brooks' Zombie Survival Guide, "blades don't need reloading."

I have one, it was a requirement for 5 years of Kendo.

I'm not the type of person who keeps a bunch of swords in my house because they look shiny though.

You obviously have no idea about swords if you think a Katana would shatter on bone or steel and did you know Samurai learned an entirely different technique for fighting in confined spaces?

No, I would not want a katana.
Primarily because I'm pretty sure its fairly hard to get a sharpened one, the ones they sell in malls and online are dull and just for show. Pretty much useless, and makes it essentially a cheap piece of metal on a hilt, that cost you a lot of money.
If one somehow managed to get a real sharpened katana, it would be pretty hard to find some actual classes to teach one how to use the damn thing. Most martial arts classes are a complete load and I'm sure that ones that go into actual useful techniques on how to use a weapon, some that I've experienced are just show/competition movements, are even harder to find.
Without training one would probably hurt themselves pretty badly.
I'd rather find a more practical weapon.
You can find sharpened swords pretty easily but you need to be careful, a lot of cheap ones are only half-tang and the blade can actually come flying out of the handle. If you ever buy any sword I would recommend making sure it's full-tang and also preferably from a reputable dealer (there are even still blacksmiths who make real weapons the old-fashioned way). It's not a big deal after the initial "WOW I HAVE A SWORD I AM SO COOOOOOL"
Still kinda nice having like 6-7 of them.

No, I've got better use for my money than spending it on some object that hangs on a wall.
