Yeah, like Rift. Or Age Of Conan. Or Star Trek. Or LOTR. Totally different games.

The MMO genre is stale. Its 10 games that are WoW with a different skin. What have we got in the way of innovation? Well, Vindictus I guess... Although there isnt really much stress on the MMO side of things... And... Erm... Runescape? Aion? No wait that just WoW... Maybe some shitty F2P browser game? Mmmmh....

Once you have spent 1000 hours in WoW and you are fed up of the gameplay, the MMO genre is dead. You may roll a character in Age Of Conan and enjoy it for 10 hours, but then its starts to feel stale again.
Planetside.
Dark Age of Camelot (from what I've read).
DDO.
Eve Online (as much as I hate it).
Lineage.
SW:TOR (from the clips I've seen).
Dark Millenium (again, from clips).
Wizard 101.
Huxley.
Second Life.

By your argument, once you've played one FPS, you've played everything, and you should never play another one. I'm not even going to get into how stupid that is.

You really have to broaden your horizons before you start spouting BS. There's plenty of stuff out there. YOU might not like it all (I hate Eve for example), but that's no reason to say that the entire MMO genre is dead.

Intelligence and maturity.
Not for everyone, apparently.

Does spamming swearwords make you feel all grown up?

DC Universe... no just kidding it is utterly terrible

But in all honesty there is not really a clear cut MMO at the moment Rift seems to have the audience of fanboys and the others just don't get in to it. Personally I tried it and got bored pretty fast just too much of a clone

Hmm - have you played it lately? It's a game my wife and I enjoy FOR its solo-ability. It didn't used to be this way but now with hirelings, guild airship buffs - etc - it's still a party friendly game but very, very do-able to solo as well.

I just got back from a 45 minute solo quest from there in fact. :D

If you're playing some of the elite content, etc., then yeah it definitely requires a group. It also lacks crafting but they seem to be fixing that in Update 9 and I really like where they're going with it. It fits the D&D flavor.
Henchmen? I recall being able to hire one for an hour or something, but even with two, a lot of stuff didn't go down well. Can you hire more of 'em now, like GW or something??

If you even bother reading this and havent already dived into Rift, how about not playing any MMO at all? If youve gotten bored of WoW you have gotten bored of all other MMOs before you even start playing them.
You do realise that's an extraordinarily ignorant comment, right? As much as I personally detest Eve Online, I'd never argue that it's "WoW in space" or something... There's plenty of other stuff out there. You just have to look for it.

OP obviously doesn't share your hatred of all MMOs, nor your ability to play every game on the market in an hour or so.

I highly highly highly highly recommend Rift. An MMO where the NPCs raid you!
Hehe, I second this.
Been playing Rift for three weeks now and it's shameful how much they've stolen from WAR and WoW, but it's still a really fun MMO. I'm getting slightly tired of it now though, but it's not surprising since I've played at the very least 6 hours/day since I bought the game.

I found Warhammer Online to be pretty entertaining. The only reason I didn't resub is that, back then, they had a lot of endgame issues. Mostly lacking it. Maybe that's fixed by now, so you could give it a whirl. It's one of the coolest PvP experiences I ever had, guarding a tower as the sole tank (tanking in PvP = awesome) against a horde of Order peeps with only minimal support (luckily 2 of the 4 healers), holding out until back-up finally charged them in the rear. Good times...

I found Age of Conan to be pretty damn good as well. They really fixed that game up after it's horrible launch. The melee system was pretty fun in that one, and I had a blast with my Herald of Xotli. What I liked most though was the brilliant environments that game had, it really rivaled WoW in terms of atmosphere. The soundtrack helps:
I could keep posting examples so I'll just leave it at that one.

Wait...what? I've been playing WoW for ages, and I've never now known a moment where wasn't about countering and using counter-counters in PvP. Which "unexpected things" and "clever ways" are you talking about here? Wall-walking your way past the Arathi Basin gates or something?

Runescape.

Hahahahano. I was kidding, though that game stole many hours of my life and many 5$ installemnts each month from my parents.

I've never really played any other MMO's, so I can't really say much about it, unfortunately.
There should be a Runescape addiction support group.
"Hello, my name is Joe, and im a Lvl 90 range pure"
"Hi Joe"

BUt in all seriousness, that was my vice for a good 4 years. IT wasn`t until they updated the game to hell and back that I just lost interest.
I played for years as well and probably only got to about a level 64. It's kind of hard to justify all that playing time and still be such a low level.

By the time they had taken out the wilderness I had already stopped playing, but I somewhat followed the updates and they were just so stupid I couldn't help but facepalm, though I think they brought back the wilderness recently cause so many people were pissed off about it.
They took out the wilderness? The bastards! I haven't played it in seven years, since primary school, but I still have some fond memories of it.

Now the new winning mechanic is to be a frost mage. Which, incidentally, I am. :p

Nothing will ever have the polish, the pizazz and the accessability of wow. It's the culmination of 6 years' patching and content updates.

However what with WoW having been down for the whole bank holiday weekend due to their rubbish provider Telia not being compatible with Virgin Media users, i'm seriously considering giving another MMO a shot. I might try Rift. I know people say it's like wow, but i love wow, and therefore i'm actually looking for a wow clone, rather than an unsuccessful "look at me try to be different" act.

Edit: For the OP, i used to play Age of Conan since release. I played a Necromancer, and while i enjoyed it my class got fucked over so many times. It had massive rehauls that broke the class and changed the mechanics to the point where it practically became another class. It would be like suddenly changing the warlock class to a mage (if mage didn't exist) in wow. I've also played Warhammer Online, terrible game with poor graphics that's very buggy indeed, though the public questing was interesting and playing with friends made it a little bit more bearable. Maybe it's better now. I hear the servers are deserted though. I also played a little bit of Aion online at release, it's alright, but very grindy like most Korean MMOs. At least it's graphically alright with a fairly slick presentation. The flying aspect isn't much of a gimmick though and there's not much to distinguish the two factions apart from light and dark coats of paint. I've always fancied giving Everquest 2 a shot, but i believe that's run by SOE, and i've had some issues with them in the past and so i avoid them like the plague.

Fuck being mature. Its no damn fun. Just like all of those MMOs you listed.
Ever considered the possibility that, just because YOU hate something, it doesn't follow that everybody else does? Planetside (for example) has been around longer than WoW - sure it doesn't have the same playerbase, but to survive that long, you gotta be doing something right.

OP has already stated that he enjoys MMO's and is looking for one. Your comments don't assist that in any way, and your continued insistence that EVERYTHING is bad and EVERYBODY is wrong except you don't exactly support your position...

Get that crap outta here.
"Fuck" is just a word. Swearing could mean virtually anything. The context is what determines what people think of it. The following statement, for example, clearly demonstrates lack of intelligence (or failing to use it at any rate), limited vocabulary and low maturity:

Are you seriously trying to argue that the above is a mature and reasoned assessment of Eve? Seriously?

I think my IQ dropped a couple of points just reading your comments. Maybe I'll go have a lie down and see if I can recover. Or a beer. Or both, and spare myself the pain of reading any further stupid BS. Yeah.

You could try Dungeons and Dragons Online. Tends to have a good community who are dedicated to doing 'raids' and the likes, and its not too hard to find a good team. Its also free (except the premium content, but you can live without that). Pretty reasonable graphics IMO and it is a true RPG MMO. I'll give you one word of advice though: D&D classes are not usually like WoW classes. You would be amazed by how many players I have had join my party and ask 'Why doesn't my rogue deal massive DPS?'. Answer, because his job is to defuse traps, unlock chests and the likes. Makes them one of the most sought after classes to have in a party alongside a cleric. I would recommend you do at least a small amount of research before picking your race and class (My first was an elf warrior. Huge mistake. I had high reflex saves, and reasonable evasion so traps wouldn't harm me so much [which was good considering I always ran ahead of the rogue in my party and set off EVERY trap in the place], and I was good at detecting hidden doors and such, but I could take barely any damage and dealt below a good DPS warrior's damage).
Definitely something you should at least try (considering its free), especially considering that its Dungeons and Dragons.

Note: Some races and classes count as premium content, but they are usually harder to learn and less played than others, even when everyone who played had all premium content (You used to have to pay for the whole game, they made it free and started charging for only small amounts of content)

Actually, its a funny story about why the players act like they do.

You see, a while back, the GM's actually had power over players, all was good since their law was absolute. Then one of them had the bright idea of having the players becoming self-ruling and the GM's only stepping in for hacking or straight up abuse that went against the EULA.

Now, you give a player the athority to make laws that other players in the game must follow, and you are bound to run into trouble, and many players knew this, so they enacted a plan to make the game as horrible as possible to force the GM's into becoming the law makers once again.

Beyond that though, I do find it refreshing running around Tokyo or NYC and realizing that anyone [save for the Military and LEO's] could be a potential attacker.

[small]now if only they would fix the max movement speed, then it would be awesome.[/small]
I didn't play the game for very long, only a couple of days in fact and for the duration of that time the police and the military where at war with one another. Kinda ruined any immersion seeing the very people who are supposed to protect acting like mercenaries. Killing anyone on sight, The Police where killing anybody entering NYC claiming it was "their territory". Apparently they where upset that the Military had the Yukon.

If the bring back the GM's and do things properly please let me know as FoM is right up my street.

Best fantasy PVE = Everquest 2. Also helps when you have a good machine and play it at 1920x1080 with everything switched to max settings.

As far as content goes - there are more quests than you will ever do. The lore is way better - or I should say there is a ton more.

If you are a cheap ass - there is a free to play server as well.

EVE Online - "Join for the spaceships, stay for the back stabby"
Nice try....

Eve Online - Join for the space battles, stay because it's been 6 months, you haven't finished training learning skills and basic weaponry yet and the only thing you can reliably accomplish is tackling so that other people get to blow stuff up and you're desperate to make the investment of so much time and money mean something!

Fixed :p

Might I humbly recommend Guild Wars? Specifically Nightfall (although all of them are quite fun).

You get Heroes in Nightfall which is the main reason to favor it over the other earlier ones.
