*looks at avatar* Laser Vision Cat says you should play Guild Wars.

Heh, but seriously... Guild Wars is fun, inexpensive (you can get all four campaigns for about $40 USD. yes that's total, not each), has loads of content and a generally good community, NO SUBSCRIPTION FEES, and is an all-round good time... especially if you happen to have a group of friends [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/members/Guild-Wars] to play with. *wink* As an added incentive, if you play Guild Wars 1, you can earn small bonuses [http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Hall_of_monuments] for the upcoming Guild Wars 2.

Speaking of Guild Wars 2... It and Star Wars: The Old Republic are on the horizon. Both of those games are shaping up to be incredible; well worth checking out.

I've heard many good things about Rift. Some bad things as well, but it changes up the formula enough that it's worth a look.

City of Heroes I've heard is pretty good as well. Though it, like WoW, is starting to feel a little dated.

Lord of the Rings Online recently went "freemium". It can feel a little confining for new players, but it can be a lot of fun as well.

Aion is a decent game. Not that great, in my opinion, but a lot of people I know like it.

I should also mention League of Legends. I know almost nothing about it, but what I have heard has been rave reviews.

As I've said many times before:
Any MMO is only as fun as the friends you play it with.

So wow sucks now(I don't like the direction the devs took, bugs me that I STILL can't raid months into the expansion due to a lack of guild effort) and I'm looking for a new mmo. Are any of the other mmos that are currently out any good or should I wait and see how the new star wars one(whatever it's called) goes?
You'll be sadly disappointed with pretty much any other MMO. WoW has the most accessable end-game content. And honestly, it doesn't sound like the problem is the game. It's your guild. Find a new guild instead of throwing out the baby with the bath water.

edit: meant "accessible", not "acceptable"

Nice try....

Eve Online - Join for the space battles, stay because it's been 6 months, you haven't finished training learning skills and basic weaponry yet and the only thing you can reliably accomplish is tackling so that other people get to blow stuff up and you're desperate to make the investment of so much time and money mean something!

Fixed :p
actually learning skills have been removed and not only that but it only takes like a month to get a proper draketrain drake or to have the general skills for a decent fit pvp ship.

Also dont you speak badly for tacklers, singlehandedly the lowest sp requirement role and absolutely the most vital role right next to corp theivery/spying and scouting.

Ah, one of those players. Fair enough I suppose, you can't please everyone. Though I must say that those "thinking outside the box" thingies you describe were really just established rules as well. In every period there was always something that was the best, the most effective. Nowadays it's just easier to decide what is. I never can recall a moment where players had freedom in the what-spec-owns-the-most departement, just seemed that way because it was more of a nuisance to figure it out.

But I never bothered with any of that anyway. I was always in it for the exploration, lore and atmosphere. And WoW has only grown in that departement. Tremendously even. And while, according to you at least, freedom has decreased in one area, it has risen dramatically in another. Players are now so much more free to tackle the game the way they feel like it. Just want to see the content? 10-Man raids are for you. Want a challenge? Go get all the 25-man Heroic achievements. Leveling with gathering, PvP or quests? It's all possible. And I find that, in the big picture, a lot more important. I'm a winner because of it.

Also, since when is WoW taking itself seriously? Have you done the Goblin starter area?

If that's the case, I bet the older players are screaming bloody murder about how easy it is to get started now. They were certainly doing so (and picking on newer players regularly) when I was there for a MUCH smaller starting boost.

While it's nice to get going in less than 6 months, I'm not sure it offsets the disadvantage of pissing off the experienced dudes.

I didn't say ANYthing negative about tackling. I just said that until you'd been playing for ages and had tons of skills, you would be stuck doing almost nothing BUT tackle (and camping on gates as a guard). Personally, I found it immensely boring.

Activate webs and scrams, set orbit at 1km. Push speed to max. Read a book until the rest of the team killed it. Yeah. Great fun.

That said, I'm sure there are some people that think it's awesome. More power too 'em.

I spent around 4 months in Eve on two separate occasions. I was bored almost all the time and by month 3, pretty much hated the game and stopped logging in. And I found the community to be as unpleasant as hell. That was my experience - why shouldn't I share it.

Seriously. Enough with the "stop hating what I like" attitude. That doesn't help the OP at all. Grow up and either a) go read a different thread; or b) post about why you think Eve is so awesome and let the OP (and other readers) make their own decisions.

APB is reopening soon on a Free To Play model if you really want to play something different. Google APB Reloaded, they have a blog and forums that you can explore while you wait for it to release (again).

Didn't it tank so badly because it was generic and samey? Or am I thinking of something else?

It tanked because Real Time Worlds was terrible at spending money and pretty much blew through all their funds before the game even released. And the pay model was stupid.

I highly highly highly highly recommend Rift. An MMO where the NPCs raid you!
Rift = WoW in every aspect except the Rifts which happen FAR too often and intrude on simple questing equally as often. i reached about mid-20s before my subscription lapsed and while i enjoyed my brief stay, i hardly ever had an experience in Rift where i didn't feel like i had done that before.

and while the graphics are for the most part much improved over WoWs more cartoony style, the armor and weapons in Rift are in serious need of some color and variety as they are bland as hell.

I play League of Legends which is sorta MMO-ish. You level, you fight, you cast spells, but then you reset at every match start. (It's DotA)

If you're looking for the exact same thing with the illusion of freshness, I'd go for RIFT.

If you're looking for something different but not EVE (not slamming the game EVE fans, it just might not be to this guy's tastes as it is SO different from most MMOS) then I'd hold out for Guild Wars 2. It's promising to shake up the "holy trinity" of tank/dps/healer, tackle the issue of a static world and generally take things in a new direction. Time will tell if it delivers, but even if not, NO SUBSCRIPTION FEES BRAH.
This is what i'm waiting for. GUILD. WARS. F**KING. 2. Although Guild Wars (the original), despite going on 6 years old, is still quite fun.
Vindictus, as well, is pretty good, if a bit repetitive.

Some do but it's mostly kept on the forums where every other post is nothing but whining, most people on the other hand are happier, more people is more targets. The complainers tend to say every change is doom but I think it might just be horrible memories of the boot.ini apocalypse.

I was just saying tacklers are very important and there is more than tackling that a new person can accomplish right in the first week even, you dont need all the skills or be playing for years to be good, unless you're a cap pilot then you are a very rare and expensive breed.

I didnt mean to come off as the "stop hating what I like" rage machine, I'm sorry but in my defense text doesnt convey how the typer means it. On topicish, it sucks many new people start off in the same boat as you did, and the community can be somewhat(exclusively if its the forums) abrasive to new players but many player corps are run by nice people, especially the smaller ones and a few of the larger mega corps. But anyways was just conversing with you, I guess I should flesh out my statements a bit more.

To OP; EVE has a lot to offer but its not all apparent in the beginning, and can see a little daunting at first if you try it. It's not for everyone but the possibilities are rather huge, heck scamming is even condoned by CCP (the developer) as long as you dont violate the ToS. Some thing include corp theft, ninja salvaging, scaming, corp spying, exploration, extortion, pirating, mining, salvaging, space trucking, escrow services, anything you can think of almost you can do. The return from EVE is equal to the time you put in and at times it can get stale but that is like every other game.
