I'm unusually commenty today, must be all the beer I'm drinking.
When I first saw this commercial, I thought to myself, "What a *****." But this post and all it's comments have changed my mind. Now I think, "Yeah! A *****!"
I live in the uber politically correct country called the U.S.A. Advertisers, afraid of being called sexist, never depict a woman negatively. I have been constantly bombarded with adds that depict men as hopelessly inept. These men need their wives/spouses/significant others to help them solve whatever problem the advertized product solves.
Here's an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMP4PF3DNg8
I know there are a lot of commercials that depict women as nothing more than sex objects like this Godaddy one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmdaB21E2tY But even those sexy women aren't depicted as stupid.
Here's one that depicts a smart, sexy woman and a stupid man in drag, the best of both worlds! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5dsG11Brco
It's just ridiculous. That's why I now love this WoW add. She's pretty stupid to dump a guy who gives her something she loves, she ain't gonna save money for her diamonds while paying monthly fees, and hell if he gave her WoW then he must play it so why wouldn't she want to play together? And why would the boyfriend complain? She's pretty attractive so playing WoW with her would put a little blood in my elf, if ya know what I mean.
I love this commercial! For the first time since the 1980's the man is the better person in a commercial!
Now the Chuck Norris add, I hate. I don't play WoW anymore, but I'm sure Chuck Norris jokes are still the norm in the Barrens. It was something the players created at some point in time that just spread like a virus through the servers and forums. Now that Blizzard has acknowledged it, it's just awkward. It was our joke, part of our subculture. Some of the thrill of being part of a subculture is lost when a part of that subculture becomes an advertisement.
