i liked the pokemon games a lot and, after a long break, have decided to pick it back up, but some of the logic of the game is just batshit nuts, and not just in the physics-defying game sort of way.
For example, why does water do extra damage to rock!? Water's ability to deal extra damage to rock baffles me, becuase rock, as a substance is quite waterproof, to the degree that "like water on rock" is a saying meaning a totally ineffective strategy.
Also, bug attacks deal extra damage to dark. I'm sure there is some rationalization for why creatures of shadow are particularly vulnerable to insects, but it doesnt hold the kind of common sense game logic that "fire beats grass" has.
Also, the HMs have a host of problems of thier own, like why is Surf called surf?, its just swimming there are no waves used for transportation, so it could easily be called "swim". How can a hoothoot carry a teenager for miles. And how does the main character breathe while diving underwater.

Can you guys think of any similar craziness in this game or others?

P.S. The mock outrage was for comedic effect, i dont really have that big of a problem with PK.
Water vs. Rock- EROSION!!! Sorry.
Methinks someone has never heard of the grand canyon lol

Pokemon just got retarded when they started giving pokemon two different types, and when they added more types. Also, the pokemon's colour used to relate directly to it's type. Generally, if they were blue they were water type, red for fire, and green for grass. Now it's just anything goes. And yes, that annoys me.
So... you hated it at the very first game?
No I just hate anything that comes after Red and Blue.

EDIT: Apart from Pokemon Snap. That remains the best Pokemon game to date.

You want some crazy "science" from pokemon then check this out:

In short, pokemon laugh at science. Besides it's just a game not like everything has to make perfect sense. Just enjoy the damn thing or don't play it.

Bulbasaur line, Charizard, Butterfree, Beedrill, Nidoqueen and Nidoking, Odish line, Paris line Venomoth, Bellsprout line, Tentacool line, Slowpoke line, Dewgong, Cloyster, Haunter line, Exeggcutor, Starmie, Scyther, Jinx, Gyarados, and Lapris. And let's not forget every flying or rock Pokemon.

and when they added more types.
How does adding two types which actually add depth make it worse?

Also, the pokemon's colour used to relate directly to it's type. Generally, if they were blue they were water type, red for fire, and green for grass. Now it's just anything goes.
Nidoran, Machop, Psyduck, Abra, Magikarp, Electrode, and Magnemite are just a few examples.

Bug pokemon are whatever the hell anyway.

And yes, that annoys me.
Why?

The only thing that bothered me about the games was why people didn't flip out when you walked in their house in the middle of the night.

I always wondered why water wasn't super effective on steel.
I lost a really close battle with my friend thinking it was.

So, if the flame is what keeps Charmanders and the like alive, wouldn't it be A) A huge risk to send them against water types or B) a really good, if not underhanded, strategy to aim for their tails.

And something that always bugged me, why do Charizard and Dragonite look almost exactly the same?

Bug being super effective against Psychic. Just why?
I always thought that one made the most sense. Most bugs over the millenia have formed a hive mind, where all experience what one experiences, and no one can think on their own, such as ants. Psychic works on the mind, so it simply wouldn't work on a non-solitary sentient mind.
But we've never seen the queen versions of any of these insects. It also doesn't explain solitary bugs like Scyther and Pinsir. We are putting WAY too much thought into this.

How is it that throwing a rock at a wild bull makes it easier to catch, rather than make it ram a horn in your chest?

I have never understood why Fire is so good against Grass. I mean come on, that's so illogical.

Throughout the entire series, I've never seen one hospital for humans.
Where are all the hospitals? Sure Pokemon do all the fighting and heavy lifting, but surely humans eventually get hurt or sick somehow, where do they go?
Do the Centers treat humans too, or are they just shit outta luck whenever they get a broken arm?

Another thing, capturing Pokemon in a way is kind of cruel, especially if you just stow them in the PC and never use them, only catching them to fill out the Pokedex. Why aren't there any protest groups? There's gotta be some people there who don't approve of people capturing powerful animals and making them fight each other.

Dude, Nintendo never uses logic when they make their games. It's not just pokemon, it's also in Mario's world of various titles, its in the Legend of Zelda series, its in the Metroid series...

Well, if you really want an explanation, just tally the logic of pokemon under the "Nintendo Logic" category and be done with it. After all, it's a game where adults send 10 year old kids out into the wilderness unsupervised and completely not worried about their safety what so ever to encounter or capture these deformed and gigantic animals that could totally rip these kids to shreds using balls that can go from the size of a golf ball to the size of a softball by pressing a button.

To put it short, Logic doesn't exist in Nintendoland. So don't even try, you will only end up hurting your brain.

The real question is why can't pokemon who should be able to naturally fly or swim unable to do so without an HM?
It's just a variation of the waiste high tree; railroading you into following the plot since 1996.

Yeah a lot of stuff doesn't make sense in pokemon, like why is fire resistant to ice? The second it comes in contact with fire it turns to water, which fire is weak to.
