Normally, I don't care about what reviewers say about games, but I was watching X-Play and saw their review of Resident Evil 5. As I was listening to their complaints, I realized that they had no idea what they're talking about.

Some of the complaints were that the control scheme wasn't exactly like everything else that's been coming out and that the inventory had to be viewed in real time. Well, excuse Capcom for trying to actually make the game more intense. That's why Resident Evil 4 wasn't as intense because if you were being chased down and you ran out of ammo, you could pause the game and switch to another weapon. In Resident Evil 5, when you run out of ammo, it's definitely more of an "OH SHIT" moment.

He also talked about how you couldn't walk and shoot at the same time. If you can go in Gears of War style and slay zombies willy nilly, then it wouldn't be SURVIVAL HORROR. That's what they were going for, and with this, you need to make more tactical decisions. That's why the chapter in Gears of War 2 with the Sires wasn't scary at all.

Another thing that bothered me is that he criticized the game on not having regenerating health. I think that's ridiculous. That's all I'm going to say about that.

All games are not the same! If they were all exactly the same, then buying a new game wouldn't be worth it at all. This review was just full of holes and all the reasons why they said it was a bad game for didn't make sense.

Some other things he said about the AI made sense because that's something you can criticize a game on. That's a problem with the game. It's like a JRPG fanatic getting mad at Left 4 Dead because it's a shooter and he didn't like shooters. I think it's just ridiculous.

I don't go around getting mad at reviewers scores and I know good and well that different people have different opinions, but seriously, this just made me mad how a "professional" review team criticized a game on such stupid things. If you could walk and shoot, then it wouldn't be survival horror. If you had regenerating health, then it wouldn't be survival horror. If you had infinite ammo, then it wouldn't be survival horror. People just don't get it.

[HEADING=1]It's their fucking opinion[/HEADING]

If you like it and disagree with what they say, fine, but don't come to us and ***** and moan about how they "don't get it". It's their opinion, deal with it, not everyon is going to like a game that you think is great.

Just deal with it.

And of course, here come the moaners who say "X-Play SUCKZ NAW!" and "THEIR REVIUZ SUK NAW CUZ THY DUN GET IT!" Deal with it people! It's their opinion, is it that hard to just look at another review instead of being personally offended by one review. One review? What, you can't stand the sight of one person not liking your precious Christ of games?

Deal with it people! They're called opinions!

I can sum up their opinion: "It's not like Halo, so we don't like it." What they wanted was for the game to conform to something they're familiar with. That's why half the leading titles on 360 are FPSs. Those games are fine, but I hate it that some people believe that games have to be of the same skeleton of another. When I want a different game, it shouldn't be "just like X" or "oldschool", it should be unique.

Yea i dont understand what happend to that show. I used to seriously take their veiws opinions and reviews into serious consideration. I hate labeling but Morgan to me is the purest definition of a "fangirl". Sessler is alright sumtimes. I miss old first seasons punky kinda tomboyish morgan. Kinda chick that would hang out on your couch pound a few back and lounge on the couch and game with the boys. Show lost it's edge a long time ago. Sad. IMO of course. I think the best realistic and honest part about that show is sesslers blog on their website. The show was slowly spiraling downwards for a while.. then when sessler became the boss of all thigns video games on g4 seems it just tanked straight to the bottom.

I think it is silly that people slam reviews they don't like, while you may find a feature good and innovative some one else may find it annoying and counter-productive. A reviewer can not be objective about a game because they live life through there eyes and certain things are going to bother them that doesn't bother others. Everyone acts like if a reviewer that usually agrees with you or is close goes complete opposite a bout a game that you enjoy it some how diminishes the quality of the game in your eyes.

I never look at reviews unless I am really on the fence about a game which isn't very often and even then I usually go and rent teh game to save money but still play the game and find out for myself.

Yeah, this

They're allowed to say anything they want, and you can agree or disagree all you want as well. Isn't it nice?

Also, real time inventory and not being able to walk when you shoot doesn't make it survival horror, it just makes the game unnecessarily annoying

Although I will agree: Reviewers taking points off a game for what it doesn't do is really stupid

Opinions,I've heard plenty of complaints about how you can't walk and shoot at the same time in resident evil. Alot of people would disagree about the inventory too. You say it makes it more intense, I say it's just bad design that artificially cripples the player.

Another thing that bothered me is that he criticized the game on not having regenerating health. I think that's ridiculous. That's all I'm going to say about that.
That's right, you think it's ridiculous. While some may think it works better for survival horror, it's not "obviously wrong". I personally think health bars are archaic.

I haven't watched the X-play review yet, were they actually critsizing the game for these things, or just noting them? Saying something like "not being able to pause to switch weapons can become overwhelming at times." would be a simple fact, that is, informing people about the game, if you like that, good for you.

Totally agree with Jumplion.

While you go on about how they don't 'get' survival horror my opinion is that Resident Evil could hardly be considered survival horror since RE4. For example most survival horror games had an item screen that pauses the game allowing the player to carefully consider their options. The fact that it doesn't pause the game in RE5 would appear to make it a lot less like the slow-pace that survival horror was based on and just like almost any other third-person shooter, offering cheap, panicky scares rather than prolonged horror.

Though Dead Space did real time inventory pretty well I think.

But at certain times, I do think it can be appropriate for reviewers to take off points for what it doesn't have, like Killzone 2 not having Co-op when it has a very co-op-y feel to it (i've played it, and it does feel like that some times) or having more control over your controls (IE customizable controls) like people wanting to at least have the option to move and shoot.

however, my point stands, it's their opinion. Deal with it. It's amazing at the amount of hypocracy some people get when commenting on reviews, saying that it's their opinion but hten turning around saying that they're stupid. You know what I did when I saw their review of RE5? I said "well, I'll take their critique into account" and moved on. This is why I like sites that average scores out like Metacritic, it gives you a general consensus of what a game is.

While I haven't played RE5, nor do I intend to, based on X-play's review I am not interested.

Friendly AI is a joke and you can't fire while moving really crippled this game from fun to frustrating. I suppose it's a bit unfair to compare a game like Left 4 Dead to RE5, but they did zombies very well. AI is on the ball, most of the time better than human players. You can shoot while moving/running, but your accuracy is diminished. Players are encouraged to take advantage of the crouch position when not on the move. Inventory was handled very well, and that was in real time too. You had to be careful about when you used your health pack, because you healed yourself in real time.

Now I know Left 4 Dead and RE5 are apples to oranges, but it doesn't excuse Capcom for refusing to polish or innovate. But hey, these are games were talking about. Some people just like that sort of thing.

but xplay went beyond opinion. theres opinions like "hmm, i thought the voice acting was poor", and then saying something like "this game doesnt have regenerating health, so less points". You cant do things like that, and the OP made perfectly valid points. Those things arent up for arguing, especially when you complain that RE5 isnt a run and shoot game.
