If you want to buy a system, have under 10 games, and don't want to play online than get a 360 because it's cheaper. With the the 360 though you don't get much memory space so you may need to get a memory card ($50), if you want to play online than you have to buy a magical internet box($50-100, depending on whether your willing to spend weeks looking through ebay)an then theres a $5 monthly fee. If you want to get serious with your gaming, you actually save money with PS3, because you get several times more memory space, free online, and blu-ray.

Which are even more incredibly overpriced.
Actually this is incorrect.
They are priced quite reasonably. Sure, the system might only come with a 20 gig hard drive, but after all these years, I've yet to come close to filling it.
But.. if I want, I can go buy a larger hard drive and combined with the price of a 360 right now, I'm still coming out to cheaper than an 80 gig PS3.

preference, that's the key point here.
Pretty much.
I own both systems and honestly I can say I am pleased with them both.
It just simply comes down to what you think you NEED to have fun and what you can live without.
Want to have the option of watching Blu-ray movies? Then the PS3 is for you.
Want a cheaper yet equally rewarding gaming experience? Then the 360 is for you.
Want to kick back and just kill a few hours of time to unwind after work or before bed? Grab a Wii.

It's all about what YOU need and want to have a good time.

Find what games that you like and buy the console that goes with it.

To hell with every single fanboy here who thinks their console is superior because of their OPINIONS.

if you want your system to last longer than a year... go for the PS3 better deal in the long run.
PS3 PS3 PS3 PS3
true if you want to avoid that just get the elite so far not a single problem reported now the core and pro are like fat kids they try to run but fail epicly
Ummm, I hate to break it to you, but I have reported an Elite problem. My 12 month old Elite went RROD last week....

That said, for a first console of this latest gen, I would suggest the OP goes for a 360. As long as they get the latest hardware, they should be ok (I would hope).

I've seen core systems, 2nd hand from EB Games (in Aust) for AU $199, including hard drive, controller etc. That's a pretty good deal I rekon.

XBox 360 also has a greater variety of games, including many more platinum games than PS3. You will be able to build a collection of 360 games for a lot less cost than a collection of PS3 games.

Which for the price of a 20 GB 360 hard drive, becomes a 750 GB Ps3. Like I said, incredibly overpriced
... what?

Xbox 360 120GB hard drive - approx. $86
Xbox 360 on walmart - $240-299
Total: approximately $326-385

or

Xbox Elite with 120GB Hard drive - $399
- Comes with Halo 3 and Fable II

Playstation 3 80Gb - $399
- comes Sonic the Hedgehog game

Prices are taken from Walmart.com just off the cuff.

And that in a nutshell gives you an idea of what consumers have to consider when deciding on a purchase.
Value comes down to personal preference but Microsoft sure pushes you to perceive their product as the better buy for your money, and putting Halo or Fable up against that travesty that was Sonic the Hedgehog isnt helping much, although I think there is an MGS4 or Uncharted bundle which is almost comparable but I think Halo 3 was better than MGS4 but Uncharted kicks Fable II's butt anyday, so it comes down to different strokes for different folks.

While it all depend on your personal preference, here's a short list of the pros and cons for both:

PS3:
Pros:
- Free online
- A sizable library of exclusive titles
- It's built like a US Navy battleship, both in terms of hardware and software
- Built in Wifi
- You can swap out the HDD for any SATA 2.5" drive
- Doubles as a Blu-ray player

Cons:
- More expensive than most variants of the 360

360:
Pros:
- More popular
- A sizable library of exclusive titles
- More exclusive DLC
- Extremely polished online play
- Most variants are cheaper than the PS3
Cons:
- You have to buy a separate wifi adapter
- You have to pay for an Xbox live subscription
- You have to buy specialized HDDs that only come in preset increments if you want to upgrade your storage
- RRoD
- Some have been reported to scratch discs

In the end though, it depends on which system has more of the games you want.
You forgot the file sharing aspect for the ps3. You can share DLC for games and such with up to give friends. Free. :)

Um... No you cant?
What DLC can you share with friends that you purchase? Certainly not any DLC that MATTERS unless you are including your family vacation photos as "DLC". But as soon as the PS3 gets some momentum behind it, somebody is going to start questioning the sharing of certain media (read: Mp3's and copyrighted videos) and Sony is going to shut down mp3 sharing on their network somehow for fear of lawsuits of being used for piracy, much like P2P suffers now.

The same thing is going to happen just like last time in the long run the PS3 will likely be worth the most bang per buck. The free online features although not as good and developed as the Xbox is quite beneficial and the games are quite fun especially if you have backwards compatibility. The PS3 is really dependent on the growth of HDTV and once it becomes commonplace it will beat the Xbox 360. The PS3 does not break down as often as the 360 I've heard between 5%-15% for some places. Well if you are lucky you can also get a 360 that lasts over 3 years hehehe.

Previous console war PS2 for the win, while xbox and gamecube dumped that system so fast you could not blink. The same will likely happen as the other consoles will be dumped for the new systems so PS3 for the win.

Also if you own a decent computer for gaming, there will likely be many games developed for a 360 and PC exclusively. Some of the best games are exclusive, but most popular 360 games are more likely to be ported to the PC anyways.

As a side note if you want to enter the tf2 tournament, but dont have this http://store.steampowered.com/app/440/ it is now $9.99 for this weekend + free test play.

Xbox 360 if you do not have a decent gaming computer and want to keep it for 3+ years.
PS3 if you do have a decent gaming computer and want to keep it for 5+ years.
Wii if you have members of the household under 12 or over 60 years of age and non gamers.

Xbox; it's so much cheaper, and there are more highly ranked games. Also, Microsoft has the balls to back original, risky concepts because games are a little side diversion for them from selling the world's most popular product (Windows). The media sharing capabilities are also fantastic, especially if you have Netflix or use a little program called uTorrent or a derivative for acquiring videos :). There's also backwards compatability if you don't have an Xbox (Ninja Gaiden is almost perfect, as is Jade Empire, SWKOTOR, Halo....). However, if you don't have a PS2( ):) get that no matter what. There are ways to play games that are hard to find physical copies of as well, pm me or search around if you want to find out specifics.

That number of failures was accurate at one point, but I'm not so sure it's the case now. From what I understand, that issue was resolved with a change to the 360 design more than a year ago and I'm not certain what the failure rate is currently. I know that mine has not failed me yet, nor anyone I personally know, but you are right. You buy a 360, you could be playing russian roulette with your investment. PS3 is the safer way to go.

Honestly though I think all the arguing over which system is better is something people with limited income argue over. I've owned just about every console ever made. I love video games. I love both systems for different reasons. I had a BLAST with Eternal Sonata and Mass Effect, but I also ADORE Folklore and Valkyria Chronicles, and since I have backwards compatibility I'm enjoying Persona 4 as well.

My advice is buy the one you can afford now, save up and get the other.
That way you cant possibly be disappointed and you'll have access to ALL the greatest games that come out over the next few years.

Also, Microsoft gains crazy points in my book for using the same technology behind IBM's Cell chip that Sony paid for more than a year before Sony had the ps3 ready, and having access to the smaller die sizes of the CBE before sony, plus having the balls to design the hardware in house. This resulted in the billions of dollars worth of xboxes with the RROD, them consulting with AMD/ATI to have a better design for the heatsink, and replacement of tons of systems, but was a brave foray into hardware design. And yeah, NO xboxes have that problem anymore; they have nice heatsinks as well as much smaller, more energy efficient chips.

Depends on the type of gamer you are, I guess. Xbox has a much lrger community for some great online expereinces, while the PS3 has some strong solo games. Personally I loved the original Xbox so I went with 360 naturally, but I would still have choosen it becuase of its large community, not that PS3 few million isn't anything to laugh at, just it's too small to find a game were lots of people are playing you style of games. Like Gears of War 2 still has people playing it and it's not a complete ghost town when the newst game comes knocking, as I speculate the PS3 to be like.

PS3 ... i own both ... the PS3 has more to offer and doesn't need to be sent for repair every month
