I'm planning on buying a 360 Slim for my birthday and I play on my computer monitor.
The problem is that it doesn't have an HD port and therefore I use a DVI-HDMI cable to play on the PS3 on it. Will it work with said cable?
Also, I use the SCART's for sound on a fairly crappy stereo until I can afford a new surround setup. Will it work when I use both the HDMI and the SCART or is that utterly impossible?
Get the VGA HD cable from Monoprice. If you monitor has VGA as well as DVI then you're fine.
I'm using a HAMA HDMI-DVI right now, and I don't have the playstation in my room 99% of the time, it's just when we've got family visits, I've bought an HDMI-DVI because I wanted an Xbox in my room you know. And the VGA is connected to the computer.
I'm sorry if my post is very hard to understand.
You could unplug it from your computer and into the 360 when you need to play the 360. It's not convenient, but it does work.

The PS3 doesn't need to because sony went the install route. So instead of spinning the disc way to god damn fast the system just installs the important data and occasionally goes to the disc.
.
That's what MS should have done, Sony found a good solution. With a 360 you end up having to install anyway to avoid chances of hardware failure, so there's little point in having a 360 without a hard drive. MS should have done the same thing as Sony, continued doing what the Xbox had with hard drive by default (rather than regressing) and have mandatory installs. It's still Microsoft's fault, there's a solution to the problem yet they chose not to use it and instead pass the problem on to the consumer.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending the systems choice to do this. I love my ps3. The damage to the discs however IS because the 360 seems intent on not using an install function.
It's nice to know the reason for it, but if you are able to explain it, then MS sure as hell should know, and it shouldn't have even happened in the first place. Or MS could have gone with hard drive install mandatory with the new S model and not released an Arcade version.

every new conscel has growing pains,
That was an argument when the 360 launched in 2005, and they had to rush it out to have a chance against Sony. You could forgive them then. Now, not a chance.

Opening the 360 voids the warrenty to my knowledge. So if anything were to happen to my 360, say it fell over and is now unable to read discs or some other problem that would be increadibly difficult to fix myself, I wouldn't be able to send it off for repairs or return it. In short, I'd be left with an expensive black box.
Why would you stand it up? On my 360, the fan is on the bottom which means if you stand it up its just blocking the fan... then cooling issues... then melt down :s
Microsoft has pictures and demos of it standing up. If you're not supposed to stand it up, have something unbalanced on the sides so you can't do it at all. The original Xbox wouldn't stand up, the PS2 would, but there isn't any need to copy Sony on that if it causes problems.
