I've had mine 2 years, no problems yet... but I do find it odd that the Elites don't f up as much... Wonder if Microsoft maybe planned it out that way.

yeah its a love hate relationship for me i love my console but hate it so much when it breaks down mainly due to cheap materials being used by xbox like a dirt cheap HDD which is why they should have local vendors that are allowed to repair without voiding the warranty. currently too human and time shift say the disk is unplayable i call xbox and they say its the game so i take the games and put them in my bro's xbox and they play fine. so i will be calling them for the up tenth time now tomorrow and telling them to fix it i wanted to play dead space next week but now all i will have is The escapist ;) oh well 4th time lucky hey. Its sad story really i treat it like gold yet it still breaks down cant funkin win!

Screw fans - the 360 is already louder than two tectonic plates colliding. I'm convinced the best way to prevent RRoD is to limit your play time. I never get a chance to play for more than maybe an hour a day and I've never had an error. Same goes for my mate who uses his only for watching movies. Paradoxically, I had another friend with "a bit of spare time" (i.e. on the dole) and his went tits up within a fortnight.

I see what your saying but its supposed to be the exact opposite and microsoft should have tested there product more before releasing and no one would have red rings of fury

Hello fellow escapists, I call upon thee geniuses to help me. My xbox 360 red ringed and is now on its way back from repair. I had a 3rd party external fan cooling it, but I hear that actually could make my xbox worse off? Could you please spare a moment of your time to give me some tips!

Ps. I do have a gaming pc and I don't want a PS3 or a Wii ;)

Thank you.
I have a solution for you that helped me, RE-Wire! Because, face it, the 360 motherboard sucks, at least around the CPU and GPU processors. Re-Solder and no RRoD since!

I put in a different heat sync and mine was always good. Except when it turned off it sounded like a bear. It is now 3 years old and still swingin' it with the best of em.

Well, I can't really help you, but I can point a few things out:
1. The ring is not always related to heat, pulling the HDD in and out seems to help sometimes.
2. I only know one person with a elite and its broken.
3. Oh wait thats about it...

Sorry...

Oh I do have something useful! aparently you can just get the fan replaced, it will go void, but I heard the fan is shite and for a coule of quid you can get a much more reliable one.

Get an Elite... from what I hear those things NEVER break.
i shelled out for an elite last may, its been running fine till i recently downloaded megaman 9, now i seem to be "hitting the crash button" as my flatmate likes to call it, a little to often for my liking, it even restored itself to factory settings a few weeks ago. so there you go, ELITES AREN'T INVINCIBLE! though it may just be me being paranoid, i did hear about a bug in megaman 9 that makes you 360 play up, as mine is doing :(

Mine is running since release, and is on ALL the time.

Guess i'm lucky, or just know how to handle electronics.

I've had mine nearly two years and it's going strong. I have a fan for it and I've had no trouble with it, however it sounds like some people here have.

Before I got the fan I found the best way to prevent the RROD was to limit play time. 5-6 hours, then off.

Reading this I guess I've just lucked out had it going on two years and havent treated it specially at all. It sits with small gaps between it and the ps2 and so far I have had no major problems. It crashes very occasionaly but thats generally to be expected; only worrying thing is occasionally if I have been playing too long it runs silent which I assume means the fan has died from overwork? I'll still be playing the game fine but the xbox itself will go silent for anywhere between 30 mins and 2 hours so when this happens I generally save and turn it off.

Limiting play time to 5-6 hours?!?

Is there any problem with having them sat on a carpeted floor?

Yeah. Hard surface improves airflow to the underside of the 360.

To be honest though there is no real defence against the RROD save a full x-clamp fix.

Oh and just thought of something to add; if you can at all help it don't use the USB ports on the 360. For some reason having a plug and play kit in one made my xbox run much hotter and louder than normal. Also having something in the USB port seems to make the xbox not turn off properly as you can still hear the fan running after the lights have gone out for a fairly long time (for me it was until I yanked out the P n P kit cable).

My elite RRoD'ed a week ago, so I wouldn't say they're any better than standards. At least it had the courtesy to do it within my warranty period though.

It was kept in a relatively well ventilated place and kept dust free, I think they just screw up when their time comes.
