To be honest, the best strategy would probably be to never touch your 360 after it gets repaired.

Other than that, there's always the risk.

You know what. when i get some disposable income i am going to create the most overheating proof xbox. im thinking high performance fans with some rather large holes in the top side, meshed of course. then a custom paintjob and some holes drilled in a good heat draining pattern. thoughts anyone?

From what I know and hear, your best course of action would be:
1:Keep the console in a well ventilated room (leaving the window open helps)
2:Do not keep the console in a cabinet!
3:Use a vacuum cleaner to remove the dust from the vents (about once a week)
4:Vertical console placement seems to work better than horizontal.
5:Try to avoid using your fan excessively.

Why on earth do the 360s do this? One of the most popular consoles and some just decide to break. Microsofts profits would skyrocket if they got rid of RROD!
They also make profits on RRoD.
Oh yeah. Good point. Still their popularity would increase at least.
How much money did Microsoft loose on the rrod recalls????
All I know is, they sell refurbished consoles and sold me an extra console because mine got RRoD. But no more RRoD for me. Dunno how much they loose on you sending your console back though. They might just sell refurbished one to make up for the losses.

yeah, don't conspiracy theorists say that car companies are intentionally making cars that break down easier in order to sell more cars?

Same sort of thing could be said with 360s.
I have no idea. Sounds hard to believe though.

But Microsoft apparently knew about the problem and failed to do anything about it. Also they sell refurbished consoles.

If you're going to use a fan, don't get the Intercooler - it actually makes it worse. Use the Pelican Pro Cooler instead, which runs on USB power and actually cools the sucker. (Only by like 10 degrees, though; you'll still have to avoid sandwiching it in the back of your entertainment center.)

Well, knocking on wood...this is what I have done so far (I've owned my 360 a year now):

1) Elevated off of ground (no carpet underneath to retain heat or block vents).
2) Turn unit to sit vertically instead of horizontally, thus allowing for more surface area to be exposed to circulating air, theororizing heat will disipate slightly better.
3) Remove all direct light from unit (meaning...not sitting under a lamp or near a window) thus minimizing any ambient heat sources.
4) I have a regular floor standing fan trained on it during extended periods of play or summer months. Sometimes I've come home this summer and my thermostat has read 85F...fan comes out and focuses on my 360.

So let me get this straight.

You sent in your warrantied console for repairs.

and somehow, they fuck up and lose it.

and you just 'lulz' and buy a new one?

I would be on their ass so hard.

Mine RRod'ed about 6 months into owning it, still, got fixed within warranty and all, so no massive complaints. One thing that has begun bothering me is when I play games the screen sometimes has lines through it which split an area that runs a little slower than the rest of the game. The TV is a brand new Samsung LCD and movies run fine on the 360, its just games. Does anyone know what this is/ has encountered this?

Uncanny. I do exactly the same with mine.

Hasn't stopped them RRODing on me. I'm now on my third machine.

TOP TIP: Keep the box UPS return it to you in, you may need it in future.

I didn't read all the posts, but here is what works for me:

First, and VERY obviously: well ventilated area. It's a no brainer. It generates heat, give it some air.

Second: Plug the Console DIRECTLY into the wall. This may seem weird, but I had a few issues with my first 360 (I'm on my 3rd) and I got the RRoD. I unplugged it from my power bar and directly into the wall...worked perfectly for the next 5 or 6 months (It died of a non-RRoD reason).

Third: Keep the console, AND the power brick, OFF OF CARPET. The carpet not only conducts heat like crazy, but it can generate static electricity which will screw your console. No carpet. It's bad.

That's basically all I do, and I can keep gamin' until the wee hours (Over 14 hours of Fallout 3 the Saturday after it's release...I was very tired afterward).

Do they extend that warranty after they repair it? (The RRoD 3 year one)

So you reckon standard practices, and no fan would be the best steps to take?
If your coming close to the end of your regular warrentity you might wanna overheat your 360 anyway so that they ship you a new one and you get a 3-year guarantee. My blasted freind got a 360 from start and his must be an angel because it finally died two days ago. Lucky smug bastard.

They don't send a new one, the fix your old one.

Mine has over heated three time now (i've got first edition 360), but i still wouldn't trade it for a ps3, i love it to bits

I had my 360 turned up right for only about a day and it bugged out (not RRoD, but stillodd).

and whenever i aim a fan at it it goes slower, maybe cause my room is dusty.

My 360 is upright about 80% of the time. (The other 20% is when I take it to work.)

Really, there is nothing you can do to stop it from RROD-ing if it's an internal thing. Recommendations from me is to keep it well ventilated, and as said earlier in this thread to NOT use any third party fan.

My 360 just died a couple days ago. Had only bought 2 new games for it 2 weeks before, too. Guess it couldn't handle the stress. Despite my console being of the post July 07 production (23 oct 07) and being theoretically longer lasting, it died 9 months after purchase. For 2 weeks before it died I've had it vertical sitting next to me on the desk, nice and cool environment out of direct sunlight with plenty of room around it AND without any kind of third party fans... I don't think there's anything you can really do. I just hope I don't become one of those horror stories with multiple bricked 360s. I may trade in my 360 if it happened again - not worth it.

Elites being RRoD proof is a myth too. There are videos on youtube of elites with the RRoD. I don't know what the failure rate is for them and you probably wouldn't be able to find an accurate one without Microshaft releasing that info.

As the owner of a still working launch 360. Just keep it well ventilated. And maybe dust it out with a can of air from time to time. That's all I have done and mine is still alive and kicking.
