This probably wont change much. People aren't going to boycott XBL over a $10 rise.
It won't be a big exodus or anything but I know at least one guy who's been thinking about canceling gold. This might be the extra push he needs to cut the cord.

Not really a price hike, more a hop. As many people have stated it won't change anything because it is hardly any money at all. At least to a "Rich westerner" like me.

Someone explain why the hell PS3 Network doesn't cost anything and XBL does!!
XBL was around longer and the XBOX 360 has outsold the PS3, so microsoft figure they can charge for it, eventually they'll have to stop i mean steam's free and so is PSN.

This might be enough to kick me to the PS3, though not until I get a job and can save up for one. So it's possible that they'll suck a few extra bucks from me, but if I can help it I might jump off the 360 bandwagon, for online at least.

I don't really see what the issue is. They haven't been correcting for inflation for the last 8 years and they've added loads of features. Compare xbox live for the original xbox to the service now.

Steam is just as bad as everyone else, we just don't like to admit it.
Well, Steam is free, and I rarely encounter an issue with it. So I definitely prefer it over Live.

Anyway, I don't even use my Xbox that much, so I don't see why I should keep on paying for Live. I'll probably cancel my subscription soon.

In a posting, Microsoft spokesperson Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb explained the hike:

"Since launching Xbox LIVE in 2002 we have continually added more content and entertainment experiences for our members, while keeping the price the same. We're confident that when the new pricing takes effect, an Xbox LIVE Gold membership will continue to offer the best value in the industry.
Wait, what. Isn't PSN free? Does XBL have a lot more stuff on it? What he is saying doesn't make sense to me.
Well I don't own a 360 myself but I am sure that they both have similar amount of content on their stores.
PSN has far fewer downloadable games than XBL.

In all seriousness, who would pay monthly anyway? It's a ripoff and always has been. I'm in the UK, and 3 month/full year prices are the saem, which just gives more inclination to use them as opposed to the ridiculously overpriced monthly payment.

The price increase isn't that big for us, but the money income for them will be huge. Just shows how greedy people can be.

My Xbox 360 has been broken for about a year now and thought I'd buy a new one since Reach is coming (halo fanboi), but this news has made me re-think - I might get PS3 instead and see how that goes..

It'll probably convince quite a few people to quit. But I had a think about it, and I've come to the conclusion that Microsoft will get back the money from the customers they've lost from those that are willing to the extra. Needless to say, it's not going to cripple XBL.

Where are these loads of games I don't find on PSN thaty are GOOD. During my few one month XBL subscripton I saw nothing I like. Hell the only good ones I've heard of are Limbo and Splosion Man. What games are you speaking of?

...Yet another reason for me to use Steam instead. For chrissakes, Xbox Live even charges you for profile pictures!

I was responding the the person's comment on the amount of content, not the quality. And I don't want to start a console war, so pay attention next time.

That's why I bought a PS3. If you don't play online, I don't see the point in Xbox live. I don't, (as I prefer games with real stories and interesting characters) and I opted to get the PS3 because of that. But why are they hiking it? PSN is free, and that's been updating itself for a while now.
I don't see the connection. You didn't care about playing online, so you got the one that allows you to play online for free? I just don't see the logical progression there.

It's like saying "I couldn't decide between milk and orange juice. I didn't want to mix any of this with my coffee, as I like my coffee black, so I opted to get milk."

That's silly... Xbox Live Gold is more expensive than it should be as it is (as in: more than $0.00. PSN is free, that Wii connect thing is free, PC connection is free) and of course they're only going to slightly raise the prices... before you know it we'll get more and more of these and everyone will say "Oh, only $5 more? I can pay for that."

But if I'm not mistaken, there is no raise for a 12 month membership, is there?

$5 a month gold brick beats free dog dropping.

So yeah, still best value.
