Well, by that mentality you could say that all FPS games are halo clones.
Going by that mentality you can say all FPS games are Doom clones.. oh wait.

Ninja Gaiden came 'first', then DMC and Godhand, then a bunch of other shit.

Edit: By the way this is a bad thread and you should be ashamed of yourself.

I would say god of war and DMC are the two basic molds for your two different types of quintessential beat em ups. While they may have shared some common roots, I think they're different enough to be accounted for differently...
This.

Dante's Inferno is an obvious inheritor/ripoff of God of War (whichever interpretation you prefer). Likewise, Bayonetta derives heavily from DMC (as one would expect, with the same creator).

However, while they might all be third person games involving combat, the similarities end there. The FPS analogy is reasonable; Quake and Counter-Strike are both shooters, but lumping them all together is patently ridiculous.

I have a very definite opinion on which of the two archetypes requires (or allows for) much, much more skill to be exercised, but that's another matter :p

What Yahtzee calls "ripoffs" the rest of the world calls Genres. However, he loves the term "ripoff" since it's a cheap shot that can be directed at almost anything you want by slightly altering the actual meaning of the word...

Resident Evil
Onimusha
Devil May Cry
God of War
One of these things is definitely not like the others.
How so? Onimusha was Resident Evil with swords, Devil May Cry was Onimusha but not shit and God of War was Devil May Cry with QTEs. Everything fits.
Oh right, how silly of me. I totally forgot about those parts in God of War and Devil May Cry where I slowly solve tons of puzzles by moving object X to slot Y.

Speaking of which, you know what was really fun? Hacking and slashing my way through zombies on Resident Evil, collecting their souls and using them to buy upgrades for my swords. That was fucking awesome.
Devil May Cry was supposed to be Resident Evil 3.. But it was so different that they changed it to it's own series.

Onimusha was Resident Evil (control wise) in Fuedal Japan, where you killed enemies, absorbed souls, and upgraded your weaponry. It also had static backgrounds, like RE, but with more emphasis on Combat rather then Puzzle Solving.

then Devil May Cry came out, and removed the crappy Resident Evil Controls, added a lot of crazy style and the Super Player buff (Devil Trigger I think it was called in DMC). I think Onimusha may have had this, but DMC definitely changed it, making it different depending on the weapons you used.

Then God of War took all of what DMC had to offer and added spells, massive violence and blood, and tits. Not to mention QTE kills.

Resident Evil though is still the progenitor, as it led directly to DMC and Onimusha, who founded the actual rules of the genre. It's a stretch to mention it, but I'm giving credit where it's due. Without Resident Evil, who knows if DMC would have developed like it did, as it was meant to be an RE Sequel.

Devil May Cry popularised what's now known as the "Extreme Action" genre (look it up).
It's also called "Spectacle Fighter" (look that up)

I guess the term to describe these games is beat 'em up, so things like Double Dragon are technically the spiritual predecessors of God of War. God knows what the first beat 'em up was though, probably some obscure arcade/home computer game.

Well it's my first thread too so it's not exactly going to be epic either.

FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIL for not knowing Ninja Gaiden started as an arcade...or did it start as an NES game first...?

Case in point, Ninja Gaiden came LOOOOOONG before.

The similarities end there? That's not exactly true. I can actually see why Yahtzee would refer to Darksiders, Bayonetta, and Dante's Inferno as God of War ripoffs. They're all hack and slash action games and they all involve doing horrible things to mythological creatures. Darksiders is based on popular classic literature (albeit much MUCH more loosely), just like God of War. Bayonetta isn't directly based on any classic literature but does involve doing horrible things to mythological creatures, in this case angels as opposed to the demons in Darksiders. Bayonttea also has a tendency to finish off her enemies with QTEs, just like Kratos in God of War. And I've said this before but the degree to which the gameplay in Dante's Inferno mimics God of War is staggering.

Yahtzee said in his most recent review of Darksiders that 2010 will be he age that cloning technology is finally perfected though not everyone is gonna like this and the Religious Fanatics might have a field day but FORWARD WITH SCIENCE!

But here comes the real question, Isn't God Of War just a shiny clone of Devil May Cry?

Of course that's as far back as I can trace Soul gathering, crazy melee fighting, demons and god killing fanatics with really big swords.

What would you guys say is the "Original" God of War?
I'm going to say Goldenaxe

All fair points. I was thinking only in terms of gameplay mechanics, not the parallels in content. It just annoys me when people lump DMC/Bayonetta in the God of War camp on the basis of gameplay. To my mind, that's like saying riding a MotoGP bike is the same as riding a bicycle :p

I was thrown off by Yahtzee's claim, because I had been hearing that it was a legend of Zelda clone more than anything

That's a bit silly to say, that's like saying in one game you press buttons constantly to play but the other game you press a button one and direct the character where you want them to go.
It'd be better to say BMX vs Mountain Bikes.
They both work the same way but one is for free style fun and the other is to ride up a mountain, very slowly, and you sweat blood
