Yahtzee sometimes oversimplifies something,

It's a GENRE not a clone,

It's like saying Starcraft is a Warcraft 2 CLONE!, its the same Genre, Or that Modern Warfare is a COUNTER STRIKE CLONE!

The hack and slash genre has been around for ages. Button Mashing games have been around for even longer, the problem is too many of the newer games fall into making a template.

One hero: START

-INSERT FILLER HERE-

Last Villian Dies : END HERE

The problem is that any hack and slash only works in the realm of what works because the genre itself sucks balls, people get tired of blistering their thums.

Well it's my first thread too so it's not exactly going to be epic either.

What Yahtzee calls "ripoffs" the rest of the world calls Genres. However, he loves the term "ripoff" since it's a cheap shot that can be directed at almost anything you want by slightly altering the actual meaning of the word...
Oh my god, did it honestly take over half a page of posts before someone could say this?
As Jandau says, it's a fucking genre, ofc the games are like each otehr when you look at gameplay.

Compare GoW to DMC, Bayonetta and when it comes out Dantes inferno.
Now comapre almost every WW2 shooter to each other.
Which is most a ripoff?

I guess the problem is that it hasn't been established as a genre. It doesn't even have a real name. I've seen both "spectacle fighter" "extreme action" "beat 'em up" in this thread, and i know they're also beeing reffered to as "hack 'n slashers" and prolly other stuff as well.

Any who thinks God Of War is a clone of Devil May Cry is just fucking stupid.
They play NOTHING alike. One is all about big fst flashy combos, the other is about tearing shit up as brutally as possible.
I facepalmed when Yahtzee said Bayonetta was a GoW clone, Seriously Yahtzee?

uhhh, Ninja Gaiden? like the Xbox game? because that came out 3 years after both DMC and Onimusha.

FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIL for not knowing Ninja Gaiden started as an arcade...or did it start as an NES game first...?

Case in point, Ninja Gaiden came LOOOOOONG before.
So the Arcade NG games were just like Devil May Cry eh?
Whose the "FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIL" now?
yeah seriously, if we're going to let the original arcade Ninja Gaiden count, we may as well count Donkey Kong... And then Pong.

God of War becamethe golden standard. After Devil may cry 2 sucked, and 3 kick everyones ass, people lost track of it. Then God of War took the combat idea, and made it better. It happens. Just like everyone compares FPS's to Halo and Call of Duty- they did it best.

Mostly because of Quick-Time Events, which (sarcasm) Oh my God totally reinvented games! I mean I didn't even realize how empty my gaming world was without pictures of controller buttons filling up the screen so I couldn't even take time to look at all the stuff going on in the game!
That and maybe the adventure/puzzle part of it? Wait, did anyone play Ocarina of Time?

God of war is definably better than DMC. The game play is fun and intuitive, the story and Dialogue is just gold. Unlike most other games God of War makes QTE'S a core part of gaming (not saying that DMC didn't do that)

But DMC is by all means not bad. It is good, excellent, but not as good in my opinion.

please, I don't want to have third degree burns :(

My main belief is that Devil May Cry started this vein. Rygar, followed soon after with the "demon/melee/gods" stance. Many other games followed in this vein. God of War, God of War 2, DMC
2/3/4, and the new Rygar port for the Wii. Newer titles would be Bayonetta, and Dante's Inferno.
While Dante's Inferno is based on the Divine Comedy, it doesn't change the fact it is a game in the same vein as DMC. Bayonetta is in the same vein, and i've heard it's made by the same dev's (i have been busy with exams, so I'm not very up-to-date on some info >_>) as DMC. I played the demo, and i didnt like it much, the general feel was a little sloppy, and (no offense to fans of the game) I thought the main character to be... a little "slutty". I have no problem with the whole sexy heroines in videogames, but i felt this game took it a little far... most of what she does seems to be snooty, and i just generally wasnt all that into the game, and i loved the GoW and DMC series.
So, i think Devil May Cry started the trend of hack 'n' slashers such as God of War

You do, for assuming I was suggesting that. I was simply pointing out that NG didn't start on the Xbox.

You also FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIL (seems we're sticking with this formula...hey look! A reference that's relatable to this article!) for agreeing with troll boy without reading first. Here, let me walk you through it:

Person A: "Ninja Gaiden came first!"
Person B: "You mean the Xbox game? That came after DMC though!"
Person C (that's me): "Ninja Gaiden did not start on the Xbox, it started as an arcade...or NES game (I forget which). No brownie points for you."
Person D (Troll boy): "Person C, you're stupid because I'm narrow-minded and don't realize that person A was pointing out that Ninja Gaiden (even the original) and DMC both fall into the "hack-and-slash" category!"
Person E (That's you): "Yeah what he said! Let's toss in other irrelevant games into the mix because I assumed that's what you guys were doing!"

Better now? =P

Perhaps, though oddly I find Kratos more likable than Dante.
Me too, its why I can't finish DMC... Dante is too much of a loudmouth to be likeable.

I'll give him one thing though, he's a pleasure to control, the responsive mofo that he is. He does what I want when I want him to do it.

That's Kratos' biggest problem, having to commit to 5 seconds of animation when you want to do the furies or whatever.

No one can compete with Gene when it comes to likable responsive characters though.
