Not to try and destroy Yahtzee's point with the RTS thing, but after the game came out Tim Schafer came out and said not to play it like an RTS and to play it more like a hack and slash with RTS elements. Like you should be down there a fair bit with your guys, you just need to replenish them every once in a while.

Yes, pretty much my opinions as well, right from the beginning of WANTING to give this game a lot more credit simply because Schafer was at the helm, but really I couldn't stand certain elements. It's not *bad*, it's just really not up to par. The RTS portion isn't terrible, but it's really disjointed. They crammed so many genres together at once (RTS, driving, action combat, and rhythm action) that the whole things sags under the weight, if not outright collapses.

That and I'm not a very big metal fan, and according to my contemporaries back home (GameFAQs), that means I just don't "get it".

As for the Jack Black comments, I personally felt that given his style and his definition of panache that he was the perfect person for this role, and to be honest, he actually fits quite well, in my opinion.
Now you're just being a jack-ass.

For the record, I'm usually quite good about the whole search bar thing.

Now kindly fuck off.

The RTS parts are basically action RTS parts where you get into the the thick of it with your armies. If you've played Sacrifice by Shiny Entertainment it plays alomst exactly the same except you have an axe and a hot rod with machine guns and flamethrowers attached to it. If you haven't played Sacrifice then you should dammit.

I mean jeez it's less than 5 dollars.

Now that thats out of the way. It is a great game. It could be longer but considering it spent a year in development hell thanks to Activision who axed the project and also tried to stop it from being released, it's amazing it's as good as it is.

I'm not sure to be mad at the creators for this because the demo does not advertise that it's a RTS anywhere in it. It seemed like a fairly fun hack and slash game with some good humor...but instead it's a RTS? They could have just had a demo of the combat with a battle or something

Didn't think I'd get a chance to break out the Big Flaming Letters screenshot from the ZP review comments again.

Mmmm... flamey.

Its a repeat topic, there was one made to discuss this VERY issue. Don't get defensive because you didn't bother to look.

And hes generally not right about anything. Amplifying the mistakes and belittling the good may be entertaining, but not good for facts.

Stop with the Yahtzee threads, its a wonder he comes here with all the people practically making a cult about him.

I haven't seen animosity towards Yahtzee threads yet (besides yours), which suprises me. Anyway, this is not a Yahtzee thread per se.

That can be taken out of context though, you could just be a leader of a group, like the main character has an audience rather than being the Roadie that no one sees as he put it. Or perhaps that you don't rely so heavily on your "army". It's not what was shown in the demo and until Yahtzee said something about it I didn't know it was that kind agame.

The RTS sections are rather simplistic and just really, really weird. However, the fact that you can fly around the battlefield or turn enemies into roadkill with your car redeems it a bit, and in the end those sections aren't what you play the game for, anyway. Yahtzee definitely exaggerated about the amount of RTS sections in the game, and you'll probably just spend hours driving around the sandbox, collecting stuff and doing side missions, and I can say I enjoyed it a lot. The biggest gripe I have with the game is the fact that there's not a lot of replay value in Brütal Legend, since once you've seen and done everything at least once the game loses the very important element of surprise. Overall though, I can recommend Brütal Legend... and if you're unsure about it, why not just rent it first?

Not alot of replay value? I guess if you aren't to keen on 100%ing a game with 100s of collectibles and discoverable songs, sure, the single player loses luster, but the multiplayer is the Actiony/RTSish shit. Except the Fire Baron Rushers...or the fact few people actually bought the DLC maps that I know of...and those who did are usually FB rushers. But aside from that, I whole-heartdely recommend Brutal Legend to anyone looking for an RTS that actually made a control system for consoles that works and isn't Starcraft, but 90% more limited and shitty.

If you want an RTS game, get Total War or Civ.

I don't think Brutal Legend is worth 60 bucks, you can probably finish it in a rent

I really like Brutal Legend too. While it's not the longest game and doesn't have the most replay value, it's wholly unique. And that's a lot more than most of the other games on your list can say. Games like MW2, while being great games in their own right, are not at all original. There is basically nothing in MW2 that hasn't been done before. Brutal Legend on the other hand is something unlike anything I've seen before. Definitely worth playing, imo.
Yea. This, pretty much. It's a great game and worth playing. The RTS elements are a little weak, but I don't really like RTS games anyway so I didn't mind. I wish they weren't in the game at all to be honest but I appreciate him mixing it up a little. I would have liked a hack n slash game even less.

The thing is, that screen was part of a series of screens that told you what you would be doing in the game. The other ones were , "explore a heay metal world" and "use the power of metal to defeat your enemies" or something. Usually when you see the words "lead" and "army" in the same sentence when describing a game, 9 times out of 10 the game is going to have some sort of strategy elements to it. It also showed some video of Eddie giving an order to some headbangers, and of what looked like a battle going on. It also showed a structure being built on the field, a classic rts staple. Thats kind of why I don't buy the whole "I had no idea there wuz gonna be rts parts in the game" argument people keep throwing around.

The only value brutal legend had from my perspective was the humor and the voice acting.

everything else is just rubbish.

Just because you see 3 people running with your character does not make it an RTS, you lead armies in RPGs all the time but you seldom bring more than a few 2-5. It never showed just how much of a RTS it is at all. But oh well, when I found out what it was I dropped it off my list.

It is possible to like Brutal Legend even if you don't like RTS games. I don't like RTS games but I love BL.

Yatzee just has a classic case of lolRTS. He saw the RTS elements, threw his tantrum and went back to the gun games.

Just about every other review who actually took the time to try the multiplayer, says it's awesome. All the others threw the lolRTS tantrum. Whiners need to pick up their balls and learn to play.

It's an Action RTS in the style of Sacrifice or Battlezone. I DO NOT like traditional RTS games, but these style of RTS I absolutely love. They combine the strategy of an RTS with the intensity of an Action Game.

Brutal Legend does three amazing things.
1. It resurrects the Action RTS hybrid. (Sacrifice is ten years old.)
2. It moves the genre to consoles and does it very very well.
3. It makes it so simple you don't need a HUD. Very under appreciated.

I didn't want Brutal Legend because I thought it would just be a short, story driven experience like Psychonauts. And if you ONLY count single player, I would be right. But when I saw what multiplayer looked like I FLIPPED THE FUCK OUT. And yes in the beginning of the RTS fights I was jumping around like a headless chicken, but as I got the hang of it, I was leading my army while slugging it out and bouncing all over the map giving orders without trouble. Now I'm one of the top players on LIVE. It's fast, chaotic, and glorious.

I loved it so much that I wrote a massive multiplayer guide to explain the premise and teach advanced tricks. Here it is. Perhaps it will help y'all out. I got to talk to Double Fine after writing it.

http://forums.penny-arcade.com/showthread.php?t=105244

Brutal Legend is my game of the year, and by showing the world a console can do RTS, I hope this subgenre of RTS flourishes. I wish Halo Wars went in the direction of Brutal Legend, where if I build a Scorpion, and I walk up to it and drive it like Halo 3, or get out and let an AI take over, and if it blows up I build another. Hell, I don't care if they copy Brutal Legend directly. Because that would be a fucking awesome game.
