I am not a fan of RTS games, but I did really enjoy the 'rts' sections of Brutal Legend. Imagine that you're on a battlefield shouting commands to people, that's all the Brutal Legend RTS gameplay is meant to simulate. "Everybody on me!" "Tear down that shitty merch booth!" "Go to your mark!" It's simplistic but in a way that I feel is cohesive with the rest of the game play.
As for sorting your priorities, your desire to play Brutal Legend should be based on the following criteria:
1. Do you like Motorhead?
2. Do you like Ozzy Osborne's first two albums?
3. Do you like Judas Priest?
4. Did you ever wish you were in one of these great bands, or a band just as great?
5. Did you ever wish you were the kick-ass warrior starring in the fantasy art adorning an Iron Maiden album cover?
If you said yes to two or more of those, then Brutal Legend was made specifically to give people like you a hard-on. If not, then this is strictly a rental. Too short and not replayable enough to warrant adding to your collection until you've tried it for yourself.
Me, on the other hand, I said yes to all five. I've beat it nearly three times.

Oh, yea... If you try it and find out that the RTS gameplay is satisfying, then you'll have a lot of fun with the multiplayer. That part I didn't so much get into, because like I said I'm not an RTS fan so I didn't have the patience to figure out proper strategies for playing the different legions against each other.
