Yahtzee right about Brutal Legend?

I'm not a big fan of RTS games. However, the RTS portions of Brutal Legend were minor enough that I didn't toss the game for it. All you have to do is spawn up some guys and send them after a single target. I end up killing tons of baddies in between taking a second to point my troops to a new tower to drop.
However, I've never touched the multiplayer, since it is all RTS battles.

I would advice you to rent it. You can get a good sense of the single player experience a few hours into it. The demo is one of the most missleading piece of advertising software I have seen... you will get absolutely nothing of the open world or the RTS part (which are about 90% of the game) and very little of the driving. If you still like it after that you can buy it, since it has a lot of collectables and an RTS multiplayer for you to play afterwards...

To me, the voices, dialogue and setting is stellar... but the gameplay (particularly the driving and RTS-esque) leaves a lot to be desired.

Ouch, you missed something awesome. You can choose between the three armies in the game, with different strengths and weaknesses. Without DLC, there are seven unique maps, then there's the DLC maps which are amazing.

There's no right or wrong. It's an opinion.

Personally for me, it wasn't the second coming of Jesus I was expecting, but I was just happy to see Tim Schafters writing again, which I loved.

And personally I only thought it was an RTS in the same sense Pikmin is (aka it's not). If your playing it like an RTS your doing it wrong.

Of course we must remember folks that ZP is an OPINION show, not actual fact. Just because he doesn't like it does not in any way mean that other people won't.

With that in mind, Why not rent it and give it a crack?

The voice-acting, story, and humor are classic Schafer, but it doesn't play all that well.
What he said. Go play Sacrifice if you want to see how the game played out. Brutal Legend had a pretty superfluous sandbox aspect that just sucked up time looking for shiny McGuffins, Sacrifice just gets you into the action/rts aspect right off the bat.

I loved the demo, so I put it on my "To Buy" list.
Once in a while I go to play.com and shuffle through my list, check which ones are under 20£ and buy them.
Brutal Legend just went under that limit, so it's in the mail!

It's funny and most of the music is good. but the RTS is pretty bad. Ok, the first time was awesome but that was in no small part because 'one shot at glory' was playing. After the first time it just got boring. then if became downright annoying. The RTS elements are just sub-par, even for a console game. Halo wars was better (than the RTS part of BL, not better than the rest). If you want to play a decent rts, stick to the pc, if you have a crappy one, get red alert 2 or something.

Awesome game, though you should probably not expect good rts gameplay, or multiplayer from the game.

It's RTS-lite, but focuses much more on double-teaming and action than commanding dudes from several dozen feet in the air. Overall it was pretty mediocre gameplay-wise.

But gameplay isn't what you pick up Brutal Legend for. Oh no. You don't pick it up because it's well-made and innovative. You pick it up for Halford and Kilmister. You pick it up for Ozzy and Jack Black. You pick it up for the chrome, the minigun-firing hotrods, the ability to drop a burning zeppelin on your foes.

Most importantly, you pick up Brutal Legend because it's fucking metal.

Uh, the multiplayer is outstanding. The Action/RTS gameplay is outstanding. It's basically Sacrifice on a console.

Here's what a high level match looks like. It's epic. Note that brawling on the ground is just as important as commanding from the sky.

I guess it depends on your definition of outstanding, if by outstanding you mean shallow and with about as much depth as some flash games then I agree with you whole heartedly, admittedly, I'm used to good RTS gameplay.

Wow, looking at your posts I can see that you're quite a brutal legend fanboy.

This genre of action RTS is not new. These are the only RTS games I play. It is not shallow. It combines the strategy and depth of an RTS with the intensity of an action game. This is a rare genre, one that I'm always seeking out. Herzog Zwei, Battlezone, Battlezone 2, Sacrifice, and now Brutal Legend, are all amazing games. There is nothing shallow about it.

My brother hates RTS games. He literally won't play anything other than FPS's (im still trying to get him to play Psychonauts). he got Brutal Legend and loved it. I have yet to try it, but if you are into the metal culture enough, i dont think it will make much difference.

My brother only like to watch Brutal Legend matches. He picks one game and plays it for months, and that game is Left 4 Dead 2. But he loved Battlezone for PC so he likes that Brutal Legend is similar.

coming out many games are, priorities to sort I have

So I've been wondering if I should buy Brutal Legend. Reviews say yes and I'd go with that but with Mass Effect 2, Alan Wake, Bioshock 2, and you get it, Brutal Legend might get the ax anyway. The big thing I'm wondering is if Yahtzee is right about Brutal Legends RTS parts. I'm not a fan of RTS but if I'm going to play and RTS game I want a half-way decent RTS experience. So, my question to you is: Are Brutal Legends RTS sections really far too simplistic?

Edit: People have been complaining that this topic was discussed in the comments section of Yahtzee's video. Fine, leason learned. People shut up.
Well I have to ask if you aren't into RTS games why would you want to play a half decent one would you not rather the simple throw everything here that Brutal Legend apparently offers(I haven't played it so I can't say for certain)?

on a side note, I had a hell of a time finding anyone to play against online. Granted this was during release week, and I could just put the game back in, and try again. but was I the only one?

I liked it, it was fun, but it's not worth buying. After you finish the game that's pretty much it. You can go around looking for the rest of the collectables but it's just sand-box padding.

Lets just say this:

Brutal Legend was one of my top 5 favorite games of all time.

If you like Music and Humor, than you will love Brutal Legend.
