Yahtzee is an entertainer before he can be considered anything close to a legitimate reviewer, and that's just fine with me.

Why did I hate Psychonauts? Maybe hate was a strong word but overall games like Psychonauts and Portal are exactly alike.

Both games have to have their comedy connect with you.

I found Portal funny.

I found Psychonauts boring.

Its all opinion and comedy styles in the end.
I agree, even though it was my kind of humour I found little even smile worhty. Stuff that sounded funny on paper failed to amuse me in execution. I also disagree with Yahtzee's "I hope we're not so jaded that we can't allow a few gameplay issues to get in the way of a game that's actualy fun" when it wasn't a FEW issues.

The gameplay was mediocre at best, the platforming was poor and the combat was way more meh then any other game whos combat he's *****ed about. I liked the characters an design but gameplay MAKES a game a game. If all you've got are pretty levels and interesting characters then you should've made a bloody movie.

Rant over: bottom line, psychonauts was unique but gameplay wise I found it SEVERELY lacking and very frustrating (and yes I have completed it)

Yahtzee reviews games truthfully but just with a little emphasis on any flaws he can find for amusement purposes. But as with all reviewers I recommend comparing his review to one or two others rather than just buying a game based off his words.

It depends on how pessimistic and cynical you are, I suppose. I agree with him for the most part but there are quite a few times i've disagreed with him.

I liked Mirrors Edge.

AND I HATED PSYCHONAUTS, YEAH, EAT THAT.
Omnomnomnomnom.
:3 there, happy?

I kinda agree with Yahtzee, :p but I don't use his opinion on games to help me choose.
I wouldn't have given Saints Row 2 a second glance if Yahtzee didn't say something, and I didn't buy Portal until he said something. I don't take his opinions when it comes down to RPGS mostly.

Most reviewers throw out words like "awesome" and "perfect" too frequently and they lose all value. I feel that I tend to agree with yahtzee and have many of the same tastes as he does.

I find a lot of what he says to ring true with me.

I don't go just on his word when he pans a game, though. I DO however pick up games he likes. I got Painkiller on his reccomendation, and it is awesome.

In Tomb Raider Underworld's review I do agree with the Kraken bit, and the wetsuit bit.

In Pysconaughts when he mentions the differculty cuve. That bit is true.

Super Smash Bros. completely true for me.

In Tomb Raider Anniversary, the leap of faith bit is correct. You have to change the the video settings.

Oblivion when I played it I had to agree with Yahtzee on various points.

And those are just off the top of my head.

the gameplay was average only because he didn't realise that the first Halo revolutionised the formula
Bungie didn't revolutionize the FPS formula. Halo is a remarkably average game. What it did do was to prove that FPS games could thrive on the console market. However, if Halo had been a PC exclusive, I guarantee you that it wouldn't have been as successful as it was.

Why do people think Halo 3 should have a standalone plot? It's Halo 3. The third game in the trilogy. It's pretty obvious that it's gonna be picking up plot points from the previous two games.

Honestly, that's like watching Return of the Jedi and complaining that it didn't spend 20 minutes recapping everything that happened in the Empire Strikes Back.
Errrm...Call me stupid, but didn't you just contradict yourself?
You said Halo 3 shouldn't have a standalone plot...which I get.
But then you said that it's the same as people complaining that Return of the Jedi not having a standalone plot?

:S
How is that contradictory? He's right. Return of the Jedi didn't have a standalone plot either and people don't complain about that, so why should they complain about Halo 3 not having one either?

It makes sense when you put it like that. My apologies, I thought that he was just contradicting himself :)
Once again, I apologise

Every time i listen to his reviews then play one of the games he brings out thins i never thought of and that are true, so yes Yahtzee is a video game Shakespeare.

Portal i a good example lol, Uhh Simcity Societies, although i had fun with the game for awhile.

I'd say he has a tendency to point out things that we've all learned to accept or ignore about games, that perhaps we actually shouldn't... and he also has an interesting ability to chip away at the credibility of gameplay mechanics that at first seem pretty functional, but that may actually be poorly chosen development shortcuts. Despite his highly critical bent and flair for offensive language, I only very rarely find myself directly disagreeing with Yahtzee's statements.

The only time I've thoroughly disagreed with him is with Condemned 2; no one in that game says 'ancient mystical cult'.
They do if you chose the right responses for forensics. Comes up around the museum level, at the torture exhibit.

But yeah, Halo 3. You can't play the final game in a series and use it to attack an entire series. A game series is NOT as good at its weakest game.
But the game itself is. I don't remember him dismissing the Halo series, just Halo 3. Now he was very dismissive of the Metal Gear Solid series overall, as well as God of War. But did he ever say Halo without 3 after it, except when he said he hadn't played the other two?

No seriously, did he? I can't be arsed to remember.

He's honest unlike other jounarlists who are sellouts to marketing, hype, and fanboys who give mediocre games high scores like Halo, World of WarCraft, Killzone 2, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Whats wrong with World of Warcraft?

Oh wait, yeah, that.
I guess I'll have to give it a listen again, but I'm pretty sure he ended up sorta reviewing the series through Halo 3, the same as he did with Chains of Olympus.

His Halo 3 plot synopsis thingy was certainly ridiculous. He didn't have any experience with the previous games, so he just spouted a bunch of catchy phrases that weren't really correct. The Elites aren't "arbitrarily" good (Halo 2), and the Flood, while pretty obviously borrowed from the Aliens series, are just a bit more complicated than he implied (again, Halo 2 dealt with this).

I don't have any problem with his verdict, but it's not fair to, for example, take a TV series, watch the last episode and claim the series is rubbish or doesn't have a good story based on the last little bit.

Well knowing that he is the critic that he is (i.e. if he doesn't like a game he will tear it apart) I bought Painkiller on the strength of his review and for what its worth, I really enjoyed it. Having said that however, I don't take his word as gospel because everyone has different opinions so I wouldn't count a game out just because Yahtzee didn't like it.

Umm... Contradicting yourself much? Seriously, Return of the Jedi continues the overall story, but ALSO works great as a standalone title. Aparently, Halo 3 doesn't...

Anyway, he is not bashing the series, just that one installment/title/episode (choose what fits your state of fanboyism).
Now, I haven't played Halo 2 or 3, but I can't say I saw anything that great in Halo 1, so I haven't bothered with it.

As for Yahtzee's reviews, I find them hilarious, extremely entertaining and HIS PERSONAL OPINION! I don't let anyone tell me what to wear, eat or think, so I don't let anyone tell me what to like either. On the other hand, the games he's reviewed that I've actually played, he's been scarily right on my own opinion, except as others mentioned, Mirror's Edge. Great fun!
