While i was younger i spent a ton of time playing that pokemon games on the gameboy. while it was very fun to play, and had different moves and other things to change the game, it still didnt have much strategy to it. it was just a game of using the strongest attack on your enemy until he died, and occasionally wasting a turn healing, and hell, you always got 6 "lives" (additional pokemon) each battle to defeat your opponent. im sure that other turn based games are more difficult, since pokemon was made for the age 5 - 12 group, but with those games theres still not any more strategy than pausing the game, taking as many days as you like to think out your moves, and then attack. while you arent given as much time in real time games, that doesnt mean it requires less planning or strategy. it simply means you have to think FASTER.
there was this guy earlier making some comparision to chess. while chess is very fun and turn based, you also have a living oponent right next to you that will likely get angry and change a few pieces around if you stop mid game to go make a sandwich and look at some strategy guide. so even then you dont have all the time in the world to play that game. he also said something about a same time version of chess, which sounds very interesting and challenging, if it can be done right.
and come on, you cant wail on starcraft, Zomni42. if you think theres no strategy in that, then you have obviously never played. you get the noobs that want to build up a couple hundred zerglings and rush you in five minutes, and the guys that build complicated fleets that are almost impossible to defeat, and both enemies require much different strategies to be defeated. and the only reason it has only 3 different resources is because it was made by a company working on 3 games at once in the 90s. the fact that the game is still widely played today should be a clue that it is a rather good game.
ok, super long post done.
