You can hate Mario games, right?

To be honest: I've played most of the 2D Mario Games and I must say I prefer the 3D games like Super Mario 64/Sunshine/Galaxy.

However, I wouldn't say I HATE Mario.

I don't think it's ok to hate Mario games. It's fine to not like them, but hate should be reserved for things that are unethical or insidious in some way. Like for example, if the latest game in your favourite series turned out to be full of pop-up ads - you could hate that. But if a developer honestly tries to make a good game and it doesn't suit your tastes, please don't throw the word 'hate' around.

Mario games that make me mad to think about:
Super Mario Galaxy
Brawl
What exactly is the problem with Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy? The first does its job as a fanservice fighter and the second game really polishes Mario 64 without relying on useless gimmicks (like the FLUDD in Super Mario Sunshine).

It seems to me a lot of people here are quick to hate on the concept and haven't actually spent time playing the games.

They look really fucking boring when you watch them, I know. But playing them is a whole different thing.
There are very few games that are fun to play and interesting to watch at the same time. Usually "interesting to watch" means making the game as cinematic as possible, which often comes with the added effect of making the game... well, less a game and more a movie. Prime reason why I don't care much for Metal Gear Solid or your average FMV laden game.

Yeah, you can. Freedom of speech.

That said, I did enjoy playing SSBB and smashing Mario's brains out.

I'm not a giant fan of Mario games.
I appreciate the fact that there are Mario games, and some are indeed fun.

But some I'm not to fond of.

It's not like Zelda games really have any more complex stories than the Mario games have. Ganon wants to rule the world, you go make chopsticks out of him. Link's Awakening and Majora's Mask aside, that's all there is to them.

I love most Mario Games, but definately hate some of the spinoffs and hate Super Mario Brothers 2 (which wasn't a real Mario game as we all know).. but SMB1, SMB3, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, New Super Mario Brothers, and Super Mario Galaxy are some of my favorite platformers ever made. I have to say the Lost Levels (the real SMB2) was alright too when we got it on Super Mario All Stars. Aside from those core platfomers.. I thought the Super Mario Land series was .. okay, but not as good as the real core platformers.

Aside from that I like Mario Kart series, and if I'm drunk and with irl friends, Mario Party isn't bad either (in fact it can be rather hilarious on the Wii version).

I think Mario's face gets abused on too many products though. Mario playing sports.. ... eh.. no.

But give me another game like Super Mario Galaxy and hell yes I'll love it. One of the key enjoyment factors of Super Mario platformers vs a lot of other platformers is the sheer amount of variety in them from Super Mario Brothers 3 and on, they got into different worlds, with unique powerups that might only be found on 1 level, which I think is cool, keeps the game from getting stale.

Between Mario and Megaman you have my 2 favorite platformer series right there.

You can honestly not like them, but hate is too far. They're some of the best games of their time, even on a purely technical level. I don't much care for 'em, either, but I still appreciate them.
Let people hate what they wanna hate as far as games go. I don't really get why he stays as the sort of deity of games, as far as I'm concerned the god left the game when the game cube left, innovation can only go so far, and some time has passed since he's been introduced, if you want to hate him go for it.

I don't care what games you do and do not like. It doesn't matter. I don't like some games, but I'm not wrong for doing it.

well not really, there are a lot more characters and stuff to relate and like... Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time gave me my first legitimate emotional experience with a game (this was when i was like, 8) when i left Kokiri Forest...

Have you tired Paper Mario? Perhaps an RPG Mario is more your style and can redeem a fallen icon.

I never liked Mario. Probably never will. Nothin' to it.
