You get a call from from someone suicidal

I'd probably try to console them, but I can't say I'd give 100%. I don't know this person, so I have nothing invested in their survival. For all I know they are a totally shitty person (already, putting me on the spot to talked them out of it is not a very nice thing to do). So while I would feel slightly guilty if I failed to talk them out of it, I'd get over it pretty quick.
Presume it's a prank call and hang up. If he/she wanted real consolation they should have talked to someone they know. Just calling random number smells of attention whoring, i.e. one of those people who only want to attract sympathy and deep down don't want to kill themselves.
Of course I'm telling this from an "objective" point of view, I have no idea what I'd do if it really happened.

I'd probably simply ask a name, and y they were going to kill themselves. Then depending on the reason, I'd fall to any of the following responses
a) You sick scumbag you deserve to die!!! (If he was Guilty feeling, because he did something terrible)
b) Dude, don't be a coward!!! (If it was a dumb reason!!!!)
c) Dude, I know its bad now, but be strong, it'll get better, I promise you!!!!

I've got nothing better to do, I'd ask them why, I'd talk to them and try to assuage them and offer whatever use someone as unqualified as me could offer.

To be honest I would assume it was a prank and hang up. If for some reason I knew it wasn't then I guess I would try and console them.
All jokes aside, since I can't think of any that haven't already been said, I'd ask them why, and depending on his answer, either tell him it's not worth it, or leave it be. If he said something retarded like his girlfriend broke up with him, I'd tell him that killing himself over it was stupid. But if he said he didn't want to keep going to a job he fucking hates just to make ends meet and he's getting too old to wait for it to "get better," I'd probably say... yeah. Just make it painless, and if you've got anything left to say, write a note to a close friend.

I tried to calm them down and try to talk them out of it. Still, I don't know who this person is or what they have been though, so suicide might actually be their last option.
