I'd say the Arctic Monkeys are pretty mainstream, honestly. If I recall their vids get in the 20+ million view range. I'd say The Kills or maybe Animal Collective come closer to falling under the "faux-esoteric" so to speak.
The Arctic Monkeys ARE mainstream. My point was that in a world where some people have somehow managed to avoid hearing of a mainstream rock band like them, our definition of "esoteric" may be a little too narrow.
Yeah, I just don't think there's any need to take into account those who have established their dwelling place beneath a mineral aggregate when defining what is and isn't esoteric. To me it's sorta like saying that, just because some people don't know who Nightwish are, that Lacuna Coil should now be deemed esoteric. I see your point though.

I usually just tell people regardless of whether I know they know it or not. "You probably haven't heard of it" is such an insulting phrase. You NEVER know what people have or haven't heard of (besides maybe close close friends/family, but even then you might be surprised) and when people say it to me I just get pissed.

"Oh, this thing...you probably haven't heard of it..."

"TRY ME, ASSHAT!!"

I have been surprised by peoples knowledge, and I have on occasion known more about said thing than the person telling me about it. Yeah, up yours hipster douche.

"Oh, this thing is bla bla bla...etc"

"Haven't heard of it."

"Would you like to know more?"

See, simple. Ok, mini rant over.

People of the tubes, don't be condescending to others. Be nice and friendly and maybe one day we'll live in a world where everyone has heard of the Megami Tensei series.

I watch a lot of movies, and it does get frustrating when I can talk to someone about a movie they saw recently, but when they ask me what I've been watching, they generally haven't heard of it.
Last time this happened was with stalag 17. That is not an obscure movie, it's just kinda old.
And over the next few days whenever someone asks me if I've seen any good movies lately, I'm gonna have to say "Yes I saw an excellent movie called silent running", and then be saddened when they say they've never heard of it.

Hrm.....

Depends on who we are talking about.

Bathing?
Parenting?
Context?
Satire and sarcasm as humor?
figurative language?
Personal accountability?

Yeah there are a LOT of things I see people out there simply have never heard of or at the very least behave as such.

A more tactful way to phrase the sentence in the OP is to ask them "have you heard of it?", so there's no assumption of whether they know it or not. Sometimes you get surprised, my middle-aged driving instructor is a fan of Basshunter for example.

With people I see on regular basis, being a Trekkie equals hipster. >.<

Now that I think about it, I don't think I ever used this phrase. Not seriously, anyway.
I might be into odd stuff that I realise are quite obscure, but when I talk about it, I either explain straight away what I'm talking about or ask if the person I'm speaking to wish to learn more. I'm all for sharing things I love with others.
And then I come off as a know-it-all...

And lately, I get pissed off if people never heard about my favourite author. It's Mario Vargas Llosa. I usually explained and gifted one of his book to the person. But 2 years ago, he won a Nobel prize. I mean, you should at least know about that?
Or maybe that makes me a snob?
Probably does... :(

Music generally. Its not even that I listen to a load obscure indie bands it just that I little bit older than most of my friends combined with the fact that most of them don't know alot of music outside of the charts so by comparison everything I listen to is an obscure indie band.

"Did they start in America?"
"No..."
"Then how could they be punk rock"

This is when I stop responding and walk away.
Yep. 'Cos the Sex Pistols were definitely singing about the Queen... of America? I'm sure that's right.

I find myself saying this quite a lot too. I'm a metalhead and since I've come to uni I can't seem to find many others, so whenever I do engage in any discussion of music I have to preface everything with 'you won't know what this is, but hear me out.' Plus the music I like outside of metal tends to be fairly esoteric...

Yeah.. pretty much in the same boat as the OP being a JRPG fan in Australia.

Random: "What's your favourite game?"
Me: "tales of symphonia"
Random: "What the fuck is that, it sounds gay"

I have yet to meet anybody, friend, aquaintance nor stranger, that has played or even heard of tales of symphonia (or the tales series for that matter).

If I ever meet a girl who knows who kratos aurion is I will marry her on the spot.

What's even worse is that I am going to distant world's on the 24th of this month by myself because when I asked my friends to come to an orchestra playing final fantasy music they all just stared blankly and then said no, not that I really mind, I do have a front row ticket :D

So as of late I have been saying "You probably haven't heard of it" quite alot lol.

"I can't next weekend, I'll be in adelaide"
"Why?"
"uhh... it's a thing, you probably haven't heard of it"
You poor person. I'm lucky enough to have friends who are into Final Fantasy as I am. We went to Distant Worlds earlier this month in London, it was epic. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. And you are very lucky to have a front row ticket, good job!

Friend: Hey Shadow. What are you doing after school?

Shadow: Going to play some Magic the Gathering with a couple guys.

Friend: What the hell is that?

Shadow: 0______0

BULLSHIT!
...how is this person your friend? >.>

OT: This happens... sometimes. I am into some things that are pretty out there, so when speaking to people who I know haven't heard of it, I generally try not to mention it, or use more generic terms. No point in complicating a conversation with unnecessary explanations.

I unfortunately find myself saying it a lot too, mostly also in regards to gaming. Like several posters (Including OP) have already noted, too few people have heard of Megami Tensei games. And Super Robot Wars. And sometimes even Tales. I've had people react with surprise that Tales of Symphonia is not the only Tales game.
Super Robot Wars is the biggest offender, though. That series needs more love, seriously.
Though it amused me when earlier this year someone else mentioned it to me and said I've probably never heard of it, after which I rattled off the entire plot to Original Generation 2 and he shut up.

EDIT: And try mentioning System Shock to someone. Anyone. Despite being a goddamn classic, way too few people knew it ever existed.

EDIT the second: Oh hell, it extends to other stuff too if I think about it. One of my favourite manga is Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, which none of my friends had heard of before I mentioned it to them. They'd never even heard of WRYYYYYYYYY before, which actually amazed me.
So yes, I find myself saying 'I don't think you'll have heard of it' and things to that effect quite a lot.

Wait. Guys...am I...am I a hipster? >:
Haha..I dunno, perhaps you are a sleeper hipster, an agent sent from the world of hips.. erm..hipstantiople? no that won't do.. um hipsterland, land of the hipster, to infiltrate earth in preparation for an invasion which is totally not an invasion because 'it like..works on this higher level of thought which we mundane people totally..like..wouldnt get, you know? and besides hipsters were into invasions waay before everyone else was doing them' it's quite possible that your superiors wiped your memory so that even you would not realise your true purpose here...

Im going to ask you a question and the fate of this world may very well depend upon your reply, are you into obscure things for the sake of being into obscure things or are those obscure things just things you happen to like?

same here, if i tell anyone what my favorite show/movie/game/music is they will have no clue 99% of the time. Why is this?

Well i've come up with a theory that explains "average people" and their lack of knowledge on media. these people have no sense of exploration or adventure. they only like what they're told to like. They are only made aware of something if it's the most mainstream thing available and like all the other kids, they will drop their "favorite" thing in a second when the next popular thing comes around.

It's really funny that these people don't know anything i could talk about BUT i know everything they could talk about. it's like they have only been on earth for a few days or some shit. If some guy asked me my favorite game and i say "Star Ocean 3" and he's like "wtf?" and than goes on to tell me his favorite game is "Mass Effect" or "Call of Duty" i'll know exactly what he's talking about.

I've always felt normal people were a completely different species from whatever the hell i am.

They just happen to be semi-obscure and I like them. I hope that's it, anyway.

I tend to prefer "Do you know them", it's much more tactful. Mind you seeing as I am incredibly mainstream I rarely need to say it but whatever.

But to add my own - for ages I've been trying to get anyone to respond to mentions of "Lock's Quest" on Nintendo DS and "Little King's Story" on the Wii. Has anyone played them? Anyone heard of them?

EDIT - Just to add to that - "Lock's Quest" was nominated by GameSpot for "Best Game No One Played".

And EDGE Magazine gave Little King's Story 9/10 (not that they're a bastion of good gaming reviews but they don't give out 9 easily). 37,000 units sold in North America.

I have tried playing Lock's Quest before but it's not my kind of game.

However I do have Little King's Story. I haven't played much of it myself (bought it originally when I was having to play my Wii through my laptop, so I didn't really get round to playing it) but I moved in with my boyfriend last year, he picked it up and loved it. I did watch him play, and it's a very nice game, full of character. A fun game to both watch and play. It is a shame more people haven't heard of it, and I wasn't aware it had sold so badly.

However, there has recently been a second game released on the Vita. Again, though, it seems it will just fade into obscurity.
If you can put up with the gameplay (it really is just a tower defense with occasionally difficult controls), then the story in Lock's Quest is surprisingly good. Interesting and original. At least in what it's willing to put its characters through. Starts off as a very traditional RPG but develops differently from the typical hero quest.

Little King's Story is so full of charm. The mornings were I would bump into villagers holding a funeral for their relatives who were killed at my behest, the art competition with former player's artwork included, religion vs. state, science and the exploration of space, pinball, the drunken king avoiding his wife, beard mountain, killer cows, the boy trapped in the egg wanting to kill his parents. The game has so many memorable moments.

I might have to buy a Vita just to play the new one.

The mother figure in that movie is so tragic. It's a good film ("non-Australian" speaking).
.
I don't think I got what her deal was...aside from being a bit nutty...(or the significance of the shoes)

When I watched it for the first time in high school I was surprised about how sad it got..
She holds all the qualities of an ideal mother - loyal, protective, supportive, caring, with a feminine desire to be seen as beautiful and useful - all gone horribly wrong, unfulfilled and abused (with tragic consequences). She represents the other side of Muriel if she didn't have her independence and gain an understanding of her own self worth.

If you say it with a smug sense of superiority, you're a hipster.

If you say it with disappointment, you're a regular person with obscure tastes.

People have begun lumping the second group in with the first group, because "hipster" is one of those labels that poisons everything around it (like "emo" and "furry").

I get called a hipster a lot just because I like traditional/world music (particularly Renaissance era music and stuff from Scandinavia and the Middle East) much more than I like "normal" music, like rock, metal, punk, or pop. I couldn't name a song by most popular bands, and those I could name I couldn't hum. It hurt my feelings at first, but then I just stopped talking to people and the pain mostly went away! :D

I do this alot with music and people call me a hipster, mainly because when people ask me "What you listening to?" and at the time I am listening to some Experimental Jazz group from the 70's that were never famous or something and the person asking me the question thinks Avenged Sevenfold are an underground band of course of they would of never heard of them and it's pretty obvious.
I love your avatar. Oh yeah and it pisses me off to no end when people who listen to shit like avenged sevenfold and black veil brides complain about "the mainstream".

ot: and I get a problem with this band. When someone asks me what my favourite band is/what I'm listening to/who-it-is-I-actually-saw-at-that-gig-I-keep-raving-on-about I can either say "well, you probably don't know them..." (which is almost always true, I've only ever met two people in real life (outside of the gig) who actually listen to them) or sound like a douchebag as I pronounce the most pretentious band name ever to have existed 4 times cos they didn't hear it clearly the first 3 times (making sure they know that there's an exclamation mark in the middle).

Of course cos the phrase "you probably haven't heard of them" has become a caricature of itself I always have to go for the latter option and cringe. It gets even worse if they ask what genre they are. "well, they're, post-rock? it's kinda ambienty and shit"

Thing is that godspeed you! black emperor aren't even obscure for their genre, but problems still come up. Heck, most people I know don't know who Brand New, Bon Iver and The Weeknd are and they're not exactly local pub artists.
