Clarification: It shouldn't even enter into your head that she's a woman. I wouldn't start a fight, but I'd defend myself if ANYONE attacks me, even if it's a chick. Equal rights works both ways.

depends on why you are being hit. being a guy myself, i understand that we do some stupid stuff on occasion, and some insensitive stuff, and thusly deserve it most of the time. then there is when it's in joking, which is alright on occasion, but no habits should be made of it. all-out assault, i think it's alright to hit back.
