One should never hit a woman for the sake of having power over them, that just make you look like an insecure jackass.

If a woman should strike me first then it is appropriate to hit her back.

That brings up an interesting point. As was shown in public response to the release of the play, Medea, we can easily overreact when we feel that a woman is threatening our power, even if we don't realize it. I've never liked Julia Roberts movies, but it took awhile for me to realize that my feelings towards her movies came from the fact that she always dominated the male characters.

Bottom line: Stay on your toes, guys and make sure it's really not about power.

I know it's an outdated concept at is, at its core, sexist. But I would agree that displaying malicious violent behaviour towards women is a bad thing, just as it is toward children or domestic animals. It's not because I beleive women to be inferior to men in any way, and if I were being shot at by a group of women, I would not hesitate to shoot back, but unmotivated attacks on girls are not something I would ever participate in.

If I'm going to get into a fight with a girl, she will be the one to start it, not me.

A better policy is to not hit anyone who is obviously much weaker than you. Because I know there are many women out there that could whip my ass, and there are a lot of men that are to small for me to not feel bad about striking.
