Ohh this old chestnut. Hoo-boy.

Yeah, I've given up trying. I could list all the artists that give great examples of good Hip Hop but it would get ignored by the people who just don't want to listen. The main (and dare I say only) argument against Hip Hop nowadays is that its all about "poppin' ganstas n smackin' bitches" which, if you only listen to the mainstream stuff is true, but you can't be surprised if you wade through a sewer and get covered in shit. If you assume that all Hip Hop is like that because that's what you've heard on the radio then I am safe to assume that all Rock music is well represented by fucking Nickleback. We all know this is wrong. The 'guns, bitches and bling' side of Hip Hop is pretty much the same as the Nickleback side of Rock music, for some reason its popular but everyone knows it have no artistic merit and is therefore ignored by the true fans on the genre.

Once again, I am fairly sure I am talking to a bring wall of metalheads here but thank you to those rational voices in this thread, those who are wiling to accept that "Even though there is a lot of shit on the radio, I do like some more underground tracks".

Disclaimer - Not all mainstream Hip Hop is shit. Jay-Z is awesome.

Feel free to react to that list, seeing as how even after being presented with that many variations, there are still some people who think "Intelligent discussion" includes "lol I dunt like rap it r shit"

you all are being to harsh i mean do you even know what rap stands for? Retards Attempting Poetery. (my apologies to any mentally handicaped people out there reading this) i will admit i like some rap when they include more techno into it but other then that its R.A.P.
Oh. My. Aching. Sides. That was so funny, I've never heard that one before, how incredibly witty of you to come up with that cutting backronym to be used to insult a style of music! And man, look at you being all risque, even after listening to every track ever made by any rapper anywhere, you take the unpopular route of slagging it, even though NO-ONE else on this site has ever done! Where can I get tickets to come and watch your stand-up?

That was sarcasm by the way. Out of interest, what sort of techno-rap do you listen to? By the sounds of it, you're talking about club-rap which is... base, to say the least.

Least thought out post. Ever.

Disregarding this one of course...
that is my opinion. noone has to like it. and saying it was the least thought out post ever is going way too far. i have my reasons for thinking this way, i could easily make a huge rant about it, but i left it simple and to the point. I am choosing not to go into it any further despite how much thought i have on the subject(and I have a fuck ton). i just hate rap THAT much.
Really I don't know if you could because that just sounds like quite the cop out to me.

I met a critic, I made her shit her drawers
She said she thought hip-hop was only guns and alcohol
I said "Oh hell naw!" But yet it's that too
You can't discrimi-hate cause you done read a book or two
What if I looked at you in a microscope, saw all the dirty organisms
living in your closet would I stop and would I pause it? Whoo!
To put that ***** in slower motion, got the potion and the antidote
And a quote for collision the decision.. is,
do you want to live or wanna exist?
The game changes everyday so obsolete is the fist and marches
Speeches only reaches those who already know about it
This is how we go about it

I like rappers that are white.. Like "Example" or "Professor Green"
I don't like rappers that are white but try to pretend they are black
I don't like black rappers such as "50 cent"

The main reason being, white rappers tend to have smarter lyrics whereas black rappers tend to rap about gunz, niggaz and pussy..

No racism intended in my comment.

I hate rap, to me, rap is nothing but yelling poetry with the word "fuck" in it a lot to a the tune of a scratching disc or to the tune of an already written song.
There is no talent in rap.

It's not that I disagree with the majority of the comments here. Though I can name a few rap acts I like, it's one of my least favorite genres. But I'm seeing a lot of dismissive knee-jerk reactions on this thread.

It's really easy to get snotty about rap music. Particularly if you don't know much about it, or have a dislike of the "gangsta" culture it often sells itself with, which itself is a pretty vile and loathsome thing. But that is just the most visible side of rap, the most profitable side, with the most money behind it.

That's all I really wanted to say. Don't tar all rap with the same brush. And if you don't know anything about it at all, why are you posting?

Rap sucks nowadays. Kanye West thinks he's so great with his fancy sunglasses and his douche haircut, well he isn't! I miss the oldschool stuff like the Sugerhill Gang made. Rappers Delight for the win.

Say one line. "Take you to candy shop..." ect make sure it's filled with sexual, violence or drug references. Then have another repeat the same line. Probley female. Make a song with three lyrics total with some dork on a tangent about his house, money, how rich he is then WHOA wait I'm still thug and getto, even though that all means not having money. And peace out...oh WAIT! No I mean, tough beatum up thug...but peace and I'll hurt you thuggness.

She's just a small town girl, living in a lonely world
She took the midnight train going anywhere
He's just a city boy, born and raised in south Detroit
He took the midnight train going anywhere

I seen her in a smokey room, the smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night

It goes on and on and on and on..

Stangers, waiting..walking down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night..
Speed lights..people..
Living just to find emotion
Hiding somewhere in the night..

Working hard to get my fill, everybody wants a thrill
Betting anything to roll the dice just one more time
Some will win, some will lose
Some are born to sing the blues..And the movie never ends

It goes on and on and on and on..

Stangers, waiting..walking down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night..
Speed lights..people..
Living just to find emotion
Hiding somewhere in the night..

Don't stop..believing..hold on to that feeling..
Street light..people..

Don't stop..believing..hold on...
Street lights..people..

Don't stop believing..hold on to that feeling..
Street lights..people..ohhhh

[Chorus]
If there is a final hour
Let's hope for a higher power
1 by 1 and 2 by 2
I have ammo what about you [x2]

[Verse 1]
Grandma told me the good book said
in the last days get ready for the ten plagues
1st the rivers will be ran with red
2, 3, and 4 dead frogs will cause lice and flies
sick livestock is 5 the living they must fight for their lives
6, 7, and 8 a boil storms a fire and locusts
9 is darkness so dark it's hard for you to focus
and 10 is death of the firstborn
If I said it was questionable the religions would make it a point
to get at me and battle me maybe have this verse torn
How will this curse form?
Well creationism, and darwinism, embedded forever about it
I got nothing but hurt for em!!
Cuz really nobody knows when you live then you die where your body goes
if it's Hell or it's Heaven
6 or the 7 well I'll keep the nina for our be foes in a gamble
that's what life is and it's hard to handle
when the bible says worship this by the scriptures written by man though
So when man destroys us the word might not stand so
till that day I'm just gon protect my fam with ammo

[Chorus]

[Verse 2]
Ive been looking for something supernatural for a long time now
but I never got proof that a spiritural realm existed wanted to find how
everybody sure of a supreme being, are people just seeing things?
wondering if we get wings, seems sick to believe in an extreme king
I know it sounds far fetched, every night i put knees on the carpet
then I pray to who's up with the star set
cuz the earth in its self is a target
for destruction, for cumbustion
cuz there aint too many you can trust in
think of all the women losing their husbands
in Iraq a lot of killing and suffering
what i hope for, seems folklore
when the enemy kills and gloat more
cuz they killin us off in this hoax war
then I wake up yellin and my throats sore
cuz the fight's there, its a nightmare
if it come to me I'm in my snipe wear
if a bullet give my lung a slight tear
I wanna believe that the light's there
so all you christians don't get mad at me
i just hope that your mystical, magical miracle's workin catastrophies
and this ain't blasphemy, but artilery is my strategy
I hope for a higher power when i look at all these tragedies

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
oh what a miracle, angels and demons
but the only miracle is that people keep believin
right hand on the bible, left hand on my rifle
keep that for my rivals and evil desciples
expand your mission, man to women
when they attack do you plan to give in
or do you do like i do and say praise the lord and pass the ammunition
people like us
piece and knife up
cuz we got evil to sweep and wipe up
devils and demons and humans, irrelevent
if they lookin deceiving i bust
I hope that the higher power is watching over me
cuz we young people don't see faith like most the older see
if he or she is listenin
a mere sign can spark me
but if the laws in the bible are bogus
then prepare for anarchy
worst case scenario is there never ever was a higher power
so in the midst of chaos now
the only real savior is fire power

[Chorus]

Spineless from the start, sucked into the part
circus comes to town, you play the lead clown
Please, please
spreading his disease, living by his story
Knees, knees
falling to your knees, suffer for his glory
You will

Time for lust, time for lie
time to kiss your life goodbye
Send me money, send me green
Heaven you will meet
Make a contribution
and you'll get a better seat
Bow to Leper Messiah

Marvel at his tricks, need your Sunday fix
blind devotion came, rotting your brain
Chain, chain
Join the endless chain
Taken by his glamour
Fame, Fame
Infection is the game, stinking drunk with power
We see

Time for lust, time for lie
time to kiss your life goodbye
Send me money, send me green
Heaven you will meet
Make a contribution
and you'll get a better seat
Bow to Leper Messiah

Bow to Leper Messiah
Witchery, weakening
Sees the sheep are gathering
set the trap, hypnotize
now you follow

Time for lust, time for lie
time to kiss your life goodbye
Send me money, send me green
Heaven you will meet
Make a contribution
and you'll get a better seat
Bow to Leper Messiah

Lie.

Please compare these and tell me which one has more variety, if you would.

2pac and Biggie were fantastic. Early Nas was fantastic. These guys were a product of their environment, and they were standing up and making a statement - fighting against the system in a way even Rage Against the Machine failed to do. 90's Hip Hop was a statement and an environmental product.

Today, Rap is irrelevant, and it seems to be hanging around like a bad smell. Rappers just feature in each other's songs, milk cashcows and all in all are horrible. The soul has gone from it. Modern Rap is a hangover.

Keep in mind, I'm talking mainstream rap. I am aware of the underground scene and how different it is and was there.

There's always gems somewhere.

I used to think it was all shit these days, then you find someone like Lupe Fiasco, Jedi Mind Tricks etc and you realize that even some of the more popular rap is still good.

And you can always listen to Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) until something else surfaces, since that album is timeless

If you're looking in the right places, hip hop is probably some of the most if not the most intelligent and insightful music being made today. It seems like a lot of you folks are judging a genre of music based on the mainstream minority of musicians. Imagine how annoyed you'd be if I said "I hate metal because it's stupid, just look at Avenged Sevenfold!". You'd proclaim that this is not representative of all metal, in fact far from it.

Just a side note, I DO in fact hate metal, but I cared enough to research the music. Check out the bands not being played on Fuze or the radio. I still hate it. Take that as you will.
