Max Brooks Model:
Probably make short jumps across to either high-mountain Colorado or up to Alaska. Denser areas like Berkeley would be horrible in this one, and California in general would suck.
I might imitate the Oregonians and go up to the middle-coast back areas, though.
28 Days Later Model:
If I'm at home in San Diego when it kicks off, probably either Alaska or just stock the hell up on food and stay in my house. Pretty sure I could get enough vegetables growing in there to keep me going (at the expense of like...90% of my living space, but hey, Oxygen!). I'd have to bar the windows up pretty well and figure out some means of keeping the generator going, though.
If I'm up here in Berkeley, I'd be stupid to try to get out of the area. It'd probably come down to finding some way of organizing as many of my hallmates as possible to lay in enough food for at least 6 months, store it evenly across the floors, demolish the stairs, and crash the elevator. Then basically just try to wait it out, potentially barricading myself in my room with sufficient personal rations if some idiot ****s up and the infected get in.
