In the small city I live in (about 10 000 residents, by EU standards it isn't even considered as a city) Not many know about Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree (my favourite bands). Also Finntroll, a finnish (at least mainly) Extreme/Folk metal band which sings in swedish.

Excrementory Grindfuckers. Quite possibly the best grindcore band ever, and this because of the fact that they don't take their image or their music seriously at all. Their music is mainly comprised of "grindcoreficated" cover songs of other artists. Like this:

They also do a lot of original songs as well. I just brought up the cover songs because they are so fucking funny. XD

Municipal Waste, i got all my friends into this amazing crossover thrash band but other than that no one has heard of them.

Wretched, an amazing new melodic death metal band.

Wintersun, epic metal band from finland, you can't even find their cd where i live.

I agree with you about TV on the Radio, a couple other bands none of my friends seem to know about are the Black Keys, Japandroids, and Morphine.
