So instead I just ordered a refurbished Gamecube for 35 dollars. Looking through all the titles for the Gamecube, I have to say the proportion of good games to mediocre ones is just outstanding.
Eh, I'm gonna have to disagree with that statement. Don't get me wrong, the Gamecube is an outstanding console, and runs 2nd place alongside the Sega Saturn for me. I'm a firm believer the Gamecube is still THE BEST console for local multiplayer. I would list all the fantastic multiplayer games, but you already know them, don't you
HOWEVER, the proportion of good games to mediocre isn't as good as you say. Had the Gamecube died a year or two before it did, I would've agreed, but by the end of its like the console was just bombarded with an alarmingly high number of shovalware, mainly games based on film or childrens TV show franchises. There are indeed many quality titles, but when I look in second hand stores in my country, the games I usually see for the GC section are those terrible games from the above category.
Also, I wouldn't say 90% of xbox games were terrible. It was more the case that the flagship title (Halo) was just too good. I've recently gone back to the xbox and started buying older titles and come to find that many of them are fantastic. Panzer Dragoon Orta in particular.

My favorite? The game boy micro that nobody liked.
I owned one of those! But you couldn't play link up on it
People didn't dislike the console. They disliked the fact it was released shortly before the DS was released, and the price for the thing was ridiculous.
As for my favourite, it's obviously the Sega Dreamcast. The moment I saw Soul Calibur in action, I went straight out and bought one. My first online console, playing Phantasy Star Online, Quake, Chu Chu Rocket and Speed Devils Online really was like I was playing a console of the future when people were still playing the PSX.
So many innovative titles also. Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Virtua Tennis. So many outstanding arcade titles like Street Fighter 3rd Strike, Daytona 2001 and Dead or Alive 2.
I loved that console so much I resented the PS2 even more when I first bought it. I was baffled at how terrible the graphics were for it when compared to the DC. I bought the PS2 with Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy X and literally took the console back the next day because I couldn't believe the games looked so bad.
I exchanged it for the Gamecube. Didn't regret that.
Finally, to back myself up, I don't have anything against the PS2 now. It's a great console. Very good at atmospheric, gritty games like the Silent Hill franchise. It just took me time to adjust to the step back in visuals with many of its games.
