Guilty Gear X2
It was the first 2D fighter game that, even though it kicked my ass, I wanted to get better at it until I could kick its ass. The whole series is good for this, but X2 gets my vote because it has so much more content than the other games. Challenge mode and Story mode are something every fighting game could use in my humble opinion.

Marvel versus Capcom 2. Pure unadulterated arcade fun. Over the top hyper combos, and with three on three characters that you can call out for support almost anytime, the screen becomes pure chaos.

Also there's the undoubtedly wicked high you get when you blast your opponent to kingdom come with two proton cannons from War Machine AND Iron Man, thrown in with Cable's Hyper Viper beam for good measure.

Oh, and playing as a Servbot. Priceless.

- Soul Calibur I & II
- Street Fighter II & IV
- Super Smash Bros. & Melee

Though I do have a soft spot for Budokai 3 and a couple Gundam games (Endless Duel and the one for PSX, not to mention FvsZ if you consider that fighting).

SF2, like so many, but then also:

Def Jan Vendetta, probably the best wrestling game of the last ten years, balls to all the licensed WWF nonsense. Oh and you got to kick Sean Paul in the knackers 384 times in a row if you wanted. What more could you want?

Then to show what a hypocrite I am, the old WWF Arcade game:

It had a surprisngly interesting and complex combat system for what looked like a button masher, and it was just plain fun, something every PS2 WWF game seems to have forgotten.

For all of the War Of The Monsters, do you get to play as a, oh, say, like a Wolfman, or Swamp Monster? I'm not sure I understand this.

The Super Smash Bros series wins, hands down. It's easy, it's highly addictive, and it feels like you have a hell of a lot more freedom around the battlefields.
That's another thing, the battlefields. SSB has the best fighting game levels I've ever seen.

Not really sure. I haven't really played that many fighting games. It's just not a genre that typically holds my attention. But, there are fighting games I enjoy...

Street Fighter II - For simplicity of control while maintaining a reasonable degree of challenge. (Guile is the man.)

Super Smash Brothers - Highly unconventional for a fighting game, which would make you think that Power Stone would also be on here...but, Smash Bros. wins simply for injecting massive amounts of Nintendo fanservice into itself. (...Lucas is the best. Go Mother 3!)

Guilty Gear - Great music, great aesthetic, excellent use of 2D graphics. I can just...stare at it and be entertained. (It's all about Faust.)

HADOUKEN!

any game with Mario is not a "fighting" game..no matter how they package it..until Mario rips out someone's spine..then it's a fighting game.

Mortal Kombat is rated #1 with me,with Street Fighter coming in second.

hell Clayfighter is more of a fighting game than any of the SSBB titles

Serious question: For everyone who's fav is Soul Calibur 2, did they ever play the first one?

Because SC1 (along with DOA2 and SFIII: Third Strike also for the dreamcast) is my favourite and, frankly, I think SC2 is a terrible sequel.

Seemed to handle worse, graphics worse, music worse, nothing innovative... so just wondering.

Soul Calibur 4, although it also has the 'giant tits in barely concealed armour' thing that I hate so greatly it also gives me the option of being allowed to play as my own customised lizard man.

DOA 4 Soul Calibur 4. I like DOA but the final boss blows. However, this could change when King of Fighters 12 comes out soon.

That's hard to say, really. Fighting games are one of my two favorite genres, so I've encountered many I like a lot. I guess I'd have to split it between competitive and overall. For competitive, Super Smash Brothers (any of them). Stand on their own, as well, but I've found no better party games. Overall: ...gah. I'm honestly torn, but because I know no one else will mention it...

Arcana Heart.

Cute cast, fun system, and oddly for a fighting game, customization. I like how picking a character is really only half the decision, as the different arcanas bring half a movelist and various benefits themselves.

And here I thought I was the only one who played it! I was torn between this, AH, and Guilty Gear. And possibly Soul Calibur.

I played the first one briefly.

However, even if SC2 somehow has worse handling, worse graphics, and worse music, all three of those things are still absolutely wonderful in the game. In light of that, SC2 has a single advantage that pushes it past SC1...Raphael!

I really wish I could say Amy is the same advantage SC3 has over SC2, but even Amy doesn't make up for that game...
