I don't know if you consider them RTS, but since they are strategy games and are played in real-time, I suppose it counts: the "city-builder" series are terrific games, especially Zeus: Master of Olympus and its expansion. I've had that game installed in my HD for some years now, and still play it occasionally.

Other than that, I'm playing the hell out of Evil Genius right now, it's also not a standard RTS, but it's strategy and it's in real-time. Think Dungeon Keeper, but this time you are a villain in the molds of Blofeld (from 007) or Dr Evil (from Austin Powers).

Instead of a dungeon, you build a secret underground base and have to send your minions out to the world to perform Acts of Infamy and steal money. You also have to deal with special agents, who are spoofs of James Bond, Rambo, Jet Li and such.

The game is tremendously addictive and fun, and very challenging to boot. If you never heard of it and want to give it a try, it's available on GOG for a very low price.

I shed a tear of joy for classics like Rise of Nations/Legends and Homeworld 2.
Company of Heroes and Supreme Commander deserves mention as well.

And Rise and FAll: Civilizations at war, what's not to love, you have your usual base building, HUGE ARMIES that clash in epic battles, and best of all, heroes that you can take control of and join the fun in 3rd person. An all around cool game.

RUSE, really ruined other RTS's for me since I panic for not having ruses or a camera that goes all the way out so I can view the entire battlefield then zoom down the camera to a point of view of a rifleman. Plus with the absence of things in other RTS's that annoy me like upgrades to units, having to research one thing to get another, having to build something to unlock something else, it's completely absent and really simplifies the hurdle of base building you have to do before getting into the actual gameplay. Too bad the game didn't sell well it's my most played game.

Other than that Ground Control, while it wasn't a very meaty or complete game the multiplayer was great and it really invented the last gen graphics of RTS's, along with creating the idea of squads, Ground Control 2 also invented the modern graphics of games like DWII back in '04 along with the new "gameplay addons" it gave.

if you can count Europa Universals 3, then yeah, one of the most underrated games ive ever played and whole heatedly recommend it to anyone who likes in-depth strategy games, it may not look like much, but multiplayer on it bring a whole new level to in game politics

I would honestly have to go with King Arthur: The Role-playing Wargame. I hardly heard anything about it, but when it went on sale on Steam, I figured I'd give it a try. It blends RPG unit-building with RTS gameplay pretty well in my opinion. Oddly enough (and pleasantly), I never found magic to be too overpowered, especially once you started going up against opponents who could use magic as well.

The only problem I've come across with it is that archers are far too overpowered. This lead to a lack of strategy as one could simply amass an army of archers and kill everything on the field. Luckily, a patch was released that gave players the option to decrease the archers' attack power significantly, and increasing the amount of strategy needed to win battles.

Also, once King Arthur II comes out battles will be quite a bit more epic, with armies going from 80-100 units comprising 12 squads to 1000s of units per side(according to PC Gamer) on the battlefield at once.

Homeworld, Homeworld2. Amazing story, amazing ships. I ~love~ the homeworld ship designs, it's the perfect balance of details (subsystem add-ons, bridges etc), and armor. Not the fall-apart-in-two-seconds trashcans from Star Wars, ships from homeworld look like they can take a beating and survive.

StarCraft 2. Yes it's "the obvious choice", but it deserves it. It's a whopper of a big game, with extremely fine-tuned multiplayer, and a very engaging single-player. It's hard not to think of "real time strategy" without images of a zerg swarm taking out a base, or a bunch of protoss carriers annihilating everything.

Oh yes, I had forgotten sacrifice. I did enjoy that one. Very unique.

Runner up for me was Red Alert 2. So much fun I had playing team matches with marine buddies vs the world. Korean air power FTW.

My favorite ever though. Homeworld. Yea its only aged so well, but it was even more unique than sacrifice. Gorgeous (for its day) and the first RTS in which the single player campaign wasn't laughably easy.

Warning: Incredibly bigoted and opinionated rant below. If you don't like that, then don't read it. Arguing against this opinion is pointless, as I'm too bull-headed to think otherwise on the subject.

I'm going to hit anyone who takes "Starcraft" as their choice, or anything in relation to it's type of "strategy". For example: Red Alert, Warcraft, Starcraft, Command & Conquer, and so on. Those are about as strategic as building a good mix of units and just throwing it at an enemy without any plans or tactics in mind. They are blatantly lying if they call themselves "strategic". I am not saying they aren't fun or entertaining, just that calling themselves a strategy game is a complete and utter lie.

Supreme Commander is close to what an RTS game is supposed to be, but not quite. It's still a resource management game, and that is only strategic from the broad spectrum.

No, strategy is coming from the Total War franchise, where if you don't keep your formation, plans, tactics, and unit types in strict order, then you are going to lose, badly.

Over all though? I'd have to say my favorite RTS game so far has been Total War: Shogun 2. It's difficult, the battles are ginormous, castle sieges are quick and to the point, and it is still smirk-inducing to see your empire spanning over the entire island of Japan, while the Shogun and Emperor quiver with the AI-programmed fear of your power.

A close second to Sega's "Total War" franchise would probably have to be the Fire Emblem series. Those games are really good for strategy junkies, and they are incredibly difficult if you want to keep all of your characters alive, since they go away for good if they die.

Best RTS is Starcraft, followed by Warcraft III, numbers say that. /thread

Now my favourite RTS/RPG is Warcraft III, I had countless hours of fun with that game, story is one of the best ever created.

My second choice would be probably AoM and AoM: The Titans, AoE III (and expansions), Rise of Nations (not as fun as first two but still). Also Medieval Total War and Shogun Total War.

@ Kiju

I can understand that everyone has his/her own opinion but saying that War III isn't strategy game and that it consists only of "building a good mix of units and just throwing it at an enemy without any plans or tactics in mind" is completely wrong and proves that you either never played it or if you did you never played it against real opponents, you have no idea how much tactics and planing that game has.

Watch some videos of Moon or Lucifer, you'll see how much strategy real RTS have.

Company of Heroes. I always loved the fact that it was kind of small army tactics, and that the environment was always being destroyed and changed, and just how generally things interacted with each other. One time, one of my flamethrower units got shot in just the right place so that his pack exploded and killed his entire squad, as well as some others around him.

Awesome.

Most fortuitous fellow forum-(ab)users I'm not talking about the "best" RTS game you know. I don't want to read Starcraft 200349 times here.
Personally I like the RTS-genre in general. I'm quite into it and thus I want to know If I missed some great games that are special and deserve mentioning...

Let me give an example...
I think Supreme Commander is worth noting.
Damn ninja'd by the OP!

Especially for the late endgame Superunits that really drain the ressource and are a very fun to command. Like the huge green Flying Saucer
Czar - Aeon experimental Aircraft Carrier. yes. It's a flying saucer that CARRIES AIRCRAFT. It also builds them faster than anything else in the game. People often forget those two details

superduperhalfwayacrossthemaprange Artillery Siege Cannon.
Mavor Experimental Artillery. Mapwide range, excellent damage and amazing accuracy. UEF experimental.

Oh on a side node, huge Ships with Spiderlegs/quote]
Gotta love the Salem class destroyer (Cybran). They can really wreck things if used right.
SidingWithTheEnemy said:
and an armored Tank that is a moving Vehicle Factory are nice too.
Ah, the fatboy. UEF mobile factory. Like the czar it builds land units real fast. Not to mention the shield and the battleship cannons. It's great for setting up firebases. It's a support unit, not really good for leading assaults.

We should play sometime if you've still got SupCom.

I'm not a big RTS fan, but I love Dawn of War for it's flavour text and it's gore.

I understand that you said don't argue, and I am fine without getting into an argument, I just couldn't read that and not say that I completely disagree with that in its entirety.

OT: I just got Achron, which came out recently, I think the best way to describe it is starcraft 1 with freeform time travel. On just a basic level this means that you could send out a scouting unit, go forward in time and look at what it explored, then go back in time and cancel the order so that you don't risk the unit. Your units fell into an ambush? Go back in time and order them along a different path. Destroy and enemys builder unit in the past? Now it never had a chance to build such and such buildings making the oponent weaker in the present. Things start getting complicated when your units gain the ability to time travel themselves, letting you double up the size of your army. To be fair though it is kind of an indie game and things like the pathfinding and ai aren't as good as some other games (although the patches are helping), I would recommend checking it out. I think escapist did a review of it.

When i think RTS i immediately think of the Command & Conquer series! I remember years ago when i was little watching my dad play the first game and becoming so keen to play it ^_^ The Red Alert series would have to be my favourite.

Special Mention of other great RTS games: Dawn of War, Age of Empires 2 and Warcraft III
